Gym and weight

The most unpleasant months of the year for gym are November, December and January.  There are always much bigger numbers of people in gym at that time, either following up on a New Year’s resolution or getting their beach body ready!  Most people don’t keep going to gym for very long and that is because, in my opinion, most of them have no idea how to exercise properly and overdo it at the beginning without tackling the bigger issue – and that is eating.

When you are young you can eat almost anything and it will not affect your shape that much, within reasonable norms of course, but as you get older it is really all about what you eat.  Exercising all day, and most people don’t exercise with incredible intensity, is not going to help you if you drink sodas filled with sugar and help yourself to desserts, junk food like chocolate and chips, etc.  I have always found January to be the easiest month of the year for me to lose weight, but normally what it boils down to is that when I am under less stress, I can eat properly and I don’t eat as much as when I am stressed and that is where the weight loss comes from.  Most people eat far more food than they need and it is extremely easy to give into the temptations that we are surrounded by, as well as our cravings, but if you really want to lose weight this year you need to get rid of the carbohydrates, focus on the proteins, absolutely eliminate all the junk food and then still considerably reduce what you eat.  It is very hard, it is not easy and that is why the vast majority of people these days are not in shape and every year sees them putting on a few kilograms more than the year before.

There are so many alternatives to gyms at the moment for instance boot camps, running clubs, dance and yoga, so its all about trying to find something that suits you.
Even so, eating healthy is a very component of a well-balanced & happier existence.

I'm not a huge gym fan, but I do still find other ways to keep active, and making sure I consume a well-balanced diet.

I never really had any new year resolutions but this year it is me and the gym and eating healthy the more active you are the less tired you are.

Surely it should not be about going on a "diet" but rather changing your lifestyle. Diets are not lifestyle changes; permanent weight loss occurs when true lifestyle change occurs.

Nothings ever easy in life! If we want to look good and feel good we got to eat healthy and exercise regularly. I believe its about embracing the challenge....

Its easier said than done to eat healthy. I am struggling to stick to a diet but I also believe that some diets is more harmful than good. I do not like a gym as its smelly and you need to use the equipment someone else just sweated on.

I struggle to stick to diets and I never have time to go to gym but I find that when I'm under more stress I lose weight, and making a resolution like go to the gym more I find it a waste of time actually because unless you are a determined person and have the right attitude to actually go to gym and stick to it that resolution is going to be broken

Eating healthy is much easier said than done , especially if everyone around you eat whatever they want. I enjoy going to the gym but with my busy lifestyle it is not always possible.

I agree with Catherine, i also prefer jogging above going to gym...
It's smelly and sometimes overfull so you have to wait to use equipment. Also, if you can get the same out by jogging or cycling, for free, than you get in the gym, which you have to pay for, why not?

I always say what you put in is what you get out

Very true, I hate the gym this time of the year. Although it is very hard to eat healthy I always try to eat as healthy as I can and to exercise as much as I can. Its only good for you if you try and stay healthy.

Eating healthy is so important, but really difficult. In January it's nearly impossible to eat healthy because we usually eat so bad through the December holiday, the thing is just to stay motivated and stick to a healthy diet.

As they say, its another new years resolution to eat healthy, but most of all get back to the Gym.

Gyms are packed In December and January.First, everybody getting ready for holidays and later, everybody is getting guilty about the holiday indulgences. The older we get the less we should eat. truth to be told we actually need very little food. But as we get older we move less and eat more to comfort ourselves because life gets too stressful

I agree with Michael. Those three months are the absolute worst times to go to the gym. It's always packed!
I am trying to eat healthier foods but it really is difficult when you are used to all the junk foods. I used to have such a fast metabolism where I could eat anything and everything and not pick any weight up. Sad that things had to change :( I'm just happy that things like weight and shape don't consume my life.

I never really cared what I ate before but I have noticed that as I get older I really do need to stop eating junk otherwise all the gym work outs go to waste! Hopefully I can be as committed as I am in January throughout the year - that's the difficult part!

Everything i believe needs to be done in moderation.Carbohydrates need to be eaten in very low quantities apart from weight gain, getting rid of them may lead to devastating effects on ones life at a later age. I prefer jogging on the road to going to the gym.

I am not the kind of person who can go to a gym and lift weights etc. I don't think my eating habits are that bad at all, and I too have a fast metabolism. I get my exercise in every week, i am a very active person, and once, sometimes twice a week play a good game of action netball. I don't have a weight issue and i intend keeping it that way.

I am really trying to eat healthier by increasing fruit and veg intake and cutting out take-aways and sugar. It is difficult though because we do have cravings and sometimes they are so strong!

I am just glad that i know how to maintain my weight. i haven't been to gym in over 6 months which doesn't really bother me because of my fast metabolism. being fat is a phobia to me really, dont see myself naming my "shape". lol.

Kaylee  said:

I went to gym last night, what a nightmare! I agree though, its all about diet, obviously regular exercise helps, but it really boils down to eating well continuously through the whole year and exercising at least 30 minutes three times a week. I think it can be difficult to maintain though with our busy lifestyles and yes stress seems to be the biggest factor in weight gain, it definitely affects my weight.

Sorea  said:
on Tuesday 07-Jan-14 09:15 AM
I always maintain, eat a little bit less and move a little bit more. Portion control and clean eating is essential, but you cannot deprive yourself. This will lead to binges .... and that is never good.

The most difficult thing for me is sticking to eating healthy. I'm giving it a shot, but when you're used to eating whatever you want it's quite difficult to stick to a healthy meal plan.

Bianca  said:

I agree that the gym is a nightmare in those months especially in January. Virgin Active runs those 'join in Jan and the month is on us' special and the crowds just keep coming. For regular members it is quite frustrating but the newbies generally do not last. Eating health / healthier is always the first and hardest step to take to ensure weight loss.

Cant say that i am perfect - love my burgers and chips - however i am constant and do not eat more than is necessary.
