This is a much talked about development in the northern suburbs, just past Dainfern. It is certainly to my mind going to spell severe pressure for the Dainfern housing market, with many people no doubt going to sell and take the opportunity of building a new, fresh house in Steyn City whereas most of the housing stock in Dainfern appears to be about 20 years old. The registered website for Steyn City is www.steyncity.co.za. It will no doubt make huge news when it is launched, and initial indications were summer 2014, which one would guess would mean September or October later this year as it is an enormous development. The scale of what they hope to achieve in terms of offices, shops as well as residential living areas makes it a massive undertaking and the infrastructure certainly looks very serious.
The bridges going over the rivers dwarf those at Dainfern, the golf course appears to have been finalised more than a year ago but it is still not open and Douw Steyn’s palace, for want of a better word, was finished some time ago at a reported cost of R250 million. Hopefully, before it opens upgrades to Cedar Road will be finalised and of course on the William Nicol side they have increased the road width but there is no doubt that whatever traffic problems exist now will be far more severe in 5 to 10 years’ time when the estate is more built up.

a few years ago i used to live on runnymead avenue in chartwell north estates. runnymead is now the western border of steyn city. when the development started, the first thing to go up was the huge wall around it. the wall alone is a monumental undertaking/construction. it is about a meter wide at the bottom and about 5 meters high. the wall down runnymead to the river is 3.5km. they used to have teams of builders at intervals along runnymead constructing the wall. never in my life before have i seen a wall like that, or the speed at which it went up.
the area that is now steyn city used to be open veld, and i used to go and ride my motorcycle through the veld and river. a couple of months ago i went on an early morning off road type ride, and decided to ride around steyn city following the wall. it is quite something to behold. the wall crosses a number of rivers, which when in flood become very large and violent. i have no doubt that the rivers will be no match for the wall.
i wish i knew a quantity surveyor, i'd love to know how many bricks were used, and the cost of the wall - it must be in the hundreds of millions... if just the western boundary is 3.5 km, the total length must be well over 10km - unfortunately, i did not measure the wall while riding that morning.
I did take quite a few photos of the wall, the bridges etc. If you are interested, Michael, i could forward them to you.
with regards to the traffic, it will undoubtedly become mayhem on the william nicol. there is also an entrance to stayn city on cedar road just after dainfern, as you travel north, and another entrance onto a dirt road on the northern side of steyn city. my old neighbours have made mention of runnymead (which ended at the river) being opened up and a road constructed to the N14 with on/off ramps to the highway.

I can only imagine what the selling price would be on a property at Steyn City. But it sure does look like my kind of place. Sports facilities, nature and security, I could get lost in the tranquility of such an amazing place. May my finances be blessed so that I may one day reside in such a dream world.

Sounds like an expensive 'little city' to live in, cant see how it would be worth it with all that traffic and congestion but I guess there are pros and cons to everything. Is this the new way to live? In your own little city? Sounds like a good place to retire or be a stay at home mom.

it is already a heavily congested area, now with 13000 houses plus all shops etc,it will bring approx 15000 if not more to the Cedar road and Willem Nicol.
i am not a fan of Fourways area: it is not pretty, congested, traffic is always a problem.
