Central African Republic

You hear news, from time to time, on radio stations like 702, as to what is going on in the Central African Republic.  It is amazing how many stories like this we’ve had to read over the years, whether they take place in the former Czechoslovakia, or various African countries.  People end up slaughtering each other, displacing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, and many countries with violence that has a history of a dictator, Bokassa made himself President for life, and ultimately declared himself Emperor.

He was alleged, although it was never proved, to have fed his political opponents to wild animals and in some cases served them as dinner to visiting officials.  There are once again stories of mass graves, people being tied up, people running around declaring what they have just eaten, people being displaced and a 100 000 people are apparently living around the airport – some of them sleeping at the end of the runway, just to try and keep themselves safe.  It is truly terrifying to hear that some people do not have the peace that we largely do, and have to spend every night feeling like an Impala in the middle of the Kruger National Park, that they are about to be killed, and possibly quite literally, eaten.

I don't think we can even start to imagine how it must be to live in such extreme conditions. Its so sad that people can be so cruel to each other

This is brutality to humankind and we must count ourselves lucky because we are not in Central Africa.

I am actually at a loss for words. I just cannot believe how a human being can be so cruel and not feel a thing for the life of another. What pleasure does one find in watching another person be tortured or better yet, actually being the one torturing them. This world really has become absolutely sick where there are no longer decent human beings being born but rather, blood thirsty savages on the hunt for the next poor soul they can torture and rip apart! I actually just have no more words!!!!!

This is so very sad to see such savages that actually are allowed to live. Poor people and here I stress about our high crime, this is just terrible and very upsetting.

It is really very sad to hear of such things, I tend to not listen to stories like these because they make me sad and I feel terrible that I have a safe enough environment to live and work in and they don't. We can be so grateful for what we have. I think that there isn't really anything people can do to change things like this happening. It has been happening since a long time ago and will keep on happening into the future and only getting worse. The world is only getting more and more violent and terrifying.

After reading this Blog I can defiantly say that the END of the world is on it's way. When the man start killing his own kind and does thinks which normal educated person can not describe then we must no be surprised if something will fall out of the sky and erase whole human nature.

I know exactly what that feeling is like since my home is situated in the border of Kenya and Uganda.

This is awful to hear. In the past, I was largely ignorant to the atrocities that were happening in Africa as a whole. That changed when I was lucky enough to work for a refugee lawyer and consult with clients, hearing their sad stories about the effects of political turmoil and human rights abuses on them. There are so many Africans who are desperate for the security that South Africa offers.

I think we live in a world where everyone is so preoccupied in their own greedy lives that we don't step back to see the bigger picture and appreciate what we have. And most of these are just children handling weaponry, killing their own kind just to stay alive. Psychologically disturbing. And vilest of all is that this is NEVER going to change, but only get worse.

its so sad seeing/hearing such things are actually happening around the world, and everytime i hear about stories like these the first movie that comes to mind is Tears Of The Sun.
i think if people around the world were knowledgeable about what is happening in other countries, they would be more grateful and appreciate what they have. i thank God everyday that we don't have to go through such in South Africa.

My opinion has always been that if every mother looks after their child/ren then there will be less suffering in the world. Just like every person should look after their own country. It is when the person who should be responsible renegades on his/her duties that the cycle spins out of control. We cannot worry about the rest of Africa when we have our own street children selling themselves as prostitutes to make money to pay for their younger siblings at home. Once you have taken steps to feed all the starving children in SA, then you can spend time saving the rest of the world. It is not being selfish, it is being logical. I say if everyone looked after their own then there would be fewer of these crisis.

Bianca  said:

This is horrible, another reason to be grateful for what we have. Extremely sad to think that people just like us have had all of their rights taken away and ultimately, there is nothing that they can do about it. To challenge the system is impossible.

Sorea  said:

Not the first and certainly not the last in the illustrious line of African dictators. Idi Amin, for example, allowed his cadres to hold the corpses of their fellow countrymen hostage for a "fee". If same was not released they would dump them in the rivers until eventually the bodies clogged the hydroelectric turbines. He also had the arms and legs on one of his wives' body switched, sewn in place and displayed because she had the gall to fall in love with another man. Rwanda had genocide so great that the bodies of the Tutsis paved the roads and people were forced to walk / drive over them. So the situation in CAR is just the tip of the atrocities Africa has seen to date.

Alexis  said:

the SANDF should not be there, or anywhere else in africa. they should be guarding our own borders. my (unfortunate) opinion on africa is: if they want to slaughter each, let them go for it. their issues have nothing to do with us, the south african tax payer should not be paying to attempt to sort out their issues, only to have our own soldiers slaughtered.
