Parking

Parking is a major problem, not just at my offices, but just about everywhere one goes.  I cannot tell you how many times I have gone to the Rosebank Medical and Dental Centre or the Rosebank Netcare Hospital and have not been able to find parking.  One goes in, collects one’s parking ticket, drives around only to discover there is no parking, and is forced to look around the area for more parking space.  If it is one word of advice I would give to any business, it is whatever parking you think you will need, multiply that by three or four.

Of course, part of the problem in South Africa is that we have a very bad public transport system, compared to other countries, and basically you cannot get around anywhere unless you have your own car.  Once people experience the freedom of having their own car, they don’t really want to be part of a lift club, even though that will be better for them, not only from a parking point of view, but more especially from a cost of fuel point of view.  Perhaps part of the answer is for employers to encourage people to form lift clubs and then, if somebody is a member of a lift club and needs to go home early for an emergency or some sort of occasion, have a company car that they can rent at a nominal price – although no doubt that will lead to new complications.  The one thing that is certain is that, apart from the very modern shopping centres, there is invariably not enough parking space in any of the northern suburbs of Johannesburg – whether you are going to a restaurant in Parkhurst, going out in Greenside or visiting a doctor in Rosebank.

Parking has almost become as worst as traffic. I hate finding parking more than traffic some days, especially when my fiancee is driving. I wanna go mad....

I think the biggest problem is that some people just does not know how to park and then they take up two parking spaces instead of only one. But when Christmas time comes around I would say that is when parking becomes a very big issue, but I would not really complain about the parking, there are far more worse constant issues in our land.

trying to find a parking is really a nightmare in Johannesburg I mean the traffic is already chaotic but there really is not more space for parking with the infrastructure we currently have

I agree if we had better public transport we would have more parking.

I'll avoid going to the shops just because of the simple reason, that there is no parking wherever you go. And if you do get a parking some genius who cant park, will have parked over 2 parking spaces, and I seem to find that it is always the people with these big cars/4x4's, that can't park nor can they drive? why have such a big car then?

Parking has become such a rash, I prefer to keep my shopping at a minimal, just to avoid the frustration of parking and make use the smaller more convenient centers, depriving myself of the better options out there just to avoid irritation, but there are of course those places such as Rosebank Netcare Hospital which there is no getting around, and frustration kicks in all over again.

It is such a pity to spend so much time finding parking in South Africa. They should really come up with better ideas for public transport and quick, if i might add. I also think underground transport would be amazing. I also agree 100% with Juliet that said, "SA please do some research and get with the international program!"

It is a pity that Joburg does not have a good public transport system. How much money could be saved by using a bus or a train instead of a car,one would minus: cost of: petrol , amortization, insurance and monthly payments towards the car. Having a car is like having a friendly thief who plucks money from your pocket every day. And it makes us unfit and fat since we dont walk anymore anywhere.

South Africa's weak point in engineering is their inability to design anything underground. Other countries with less space than SA have maximized their space by building underground transport systems and parking lots resulting in better infrastructure and smoother daily operating for their citizens. SA please do some research and get with the international programme!

Parkin is and will always be aproblem. Unless you get there and I mean really early, you will always struggle. Change needs to happen everywhere and people need to take into consideration the size and popularity of a place in order to accomodate same

Finding parking is such a nightmare... Not only for businesses but also if you are living in certain complexes. I've looked at some apartments with two bedrooms for sale, but they only cater a parking space for one car. It has become extremely annoying.

Just like Jade, I too choose carefully where I shop based on what the parking is like. There is no 'quick popping' into the mall these days. Let me not even start on Greenside, not only is the parking a nightmare even when paying for your parking you have a very high chance of your vehicle either being stole or having a window smashed. I'm happiest when I am able to get a lift anywhere rather than drive. When I don't park at the offices I try get dropped off rather than search for parking.

I agree parking is frustrating in Johannesburg, that why I rather do all my shopping in Vereeniging. I want to spend all of my time in the mall, not outside in the car looking for a parking!

Ah, finding parking in Johannesburg, a close second with traffic on my pet peeves. Even if you use the very limited public transport that we have (ie: the Gautrain) you might get turned away because the parking bays are full. I am starting to think there are far too many people in Johannesburg and far to little space. Time to move to the moon?

Zelda   said:

I agree on being part of a lift club...
the fuel price every month that each person has to pay, is less.
in stead of having to look for 4 parking spaces, you only have to look for one.
If you want to have lunch with a friend rather have it at home or arrange to drive with one car...

Jade  said:

This is so true, the parking in Johannesburg is such a nightmare. I actually choose where I shop now, based on how easy it is to park. Life is too short to spend half an hour looking for parking.
