I was very disappointed to hear that Multichoice of planning to close horseracing channel, Channel 239. That is because they say that it is not popular not and not enough people watch horseracing. I do hope it’s a decision they’ll reconsider, because it will be a huge blow to the life of the horseracing industry in South Africa.
The horseracing industry is, in itself a major employer in South Africa with each course generally having at least one group, and so the more you chase people away from owning racehorses or been involved in the racing game, the more you will unfortunately adversely affect employment in South Africa. There are not that many industries that actually employ as many people, and in horseracing it’s all on the back of the owner. If the owner, for example, has 20 horses, it means that that owner is probably keeping 20 people employed – apart from what he or she may be doing at his or her main business. It is shortsighted decision by Multichoice, and while I appreciate that obviously more people wish to watch Fashion TV, and girls strutting up and down in lingerie, that channel certainly serves far less purpose, and does nothing for employment in South Africa, compared to racing.

People are not aware that horseracing industry is so big because majority is not interested on it.

Also disappointed. Have a keen interest in racing - the horse recruitment side of it. Think Multichoice needs to do a survey at how many people are watching.

I don't like watching horse races but I am sure for people who have horses this is bad news. Especially if your horse is doing a race and you can't be there yourself.

Horse racing has never been a major interest of mine, but i do however know quite a few people who watch it and bet on the horses on a regular basis. If i know a few people, and everyone else knows a few people, then it is a bit hard to believe that the channel is not getting enough views to keep it running. Dstv is making a killing and there turnover ever year must be exceptional, so this decision is clearly not well thought out, and i do hope that they reconsider.

It is a pity they are closing down the horse racing channel. It may not be everyone's top interest, but taking it away completely is just proving once again, how narrow minded the Television industry is, and its main goal of only making money. DSTV was meant to be a divers enterprise which catered for all types of interests, Looks like that has gone out the window, with at least 5 soccer channels on at one time, as well as 4 cooking channels, I'm sure they could leave the horse racing channel in tact, But business is business, and people are here to make money.

I don't watch television at all so it wouldn't really influence my life in a negative way if either of those channels get cancelled... however if i had to choose between watching horse races and watching fashion television, i would much rather watch horse racing...
It will really be a blow for the racehorse industry and i really hope that they will reconsider before closing down the channel. The trainers especially used this channel to watch the race again and she were the problem might be with the horses.

If no one watches the channel then it follows the channel will be cancelled. As usual, there is no foresight in decision-making and possible consequences thereof in this country.

Never heard or watched anything on this channel. Fashion TV I would say in my opinion does serve employment, because you need designers, make-artists hair-dresser models etc. Lot of woman are really interested in the newest trends and fashion, Show me a woman that not wants to look sexy and feel good. So why by a book for it all? If you can just put the television on Fashion TV?
