A break from the rain

I don’t remember, apart from perhaps Cyclone Domoina in 1984, when I lived in Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal, a time when there has been so much rain.  That of course was an intense amount of rain over three or four days, but what we have experienced now for almost two weeks is something that I really do not remember in Johannesburg.  We often do have wet weekends during March and April, as we say goodbye to the summer rains, and they almost always coincide with Club Championships at most local golf courses – as they did again this year, but I still don’t remember it raining so heavily for 14 days.

My garden is absolutely saturated, my basement area, which was not properly built or designed – lawyers are still to decide which it is, if not both – is wet again and I like most people would actually like just a bit of break from the rain right now!  It is easy for us, who live in secure brick structures, and who drive to work in cars, and then work in a safe and secure area and a well-ventilated building, of course to forget that there are many others who are no ways as lucky as us.  The vast majority of our country is living in shacks, and are surrounded by pools of water.  Those living on the edge of rivers, as is common in many townships, have either seen their houses flooded or in some cases washed away and of course there has been an increase in drowning’s all over South Africa.  Still, I cannot help but hope that today is a changing point in the weather and that this season will come to pass.

I really do enjoy the rain, but the last two weeks has just been too much. Traffic has been a nightmare and the amount of pot holes increase by the day. My ceiling also started leaking and my wooden doors are jammed. Luckily it seems like the sun is starting to appear again!

Not a big fan for this weather, makes me depressed. I'd much rather appreciate a lovely sunny-day outside. I'm very thankful, but really two weeks I would say was enough for now.

I grew up in the Lowveld where you were always grateful for rain because it meant that there would not be a drought with water restrictions. It is also there where you see the destructive power of surplus rain where crops are washed away and livestock drowned by flash floods. So be grateful that you have a secure home, car and office.

The rain has certainly caused some upset in the country, potholes are growing at a rapid rate and traffic is absolutely horrible as people in Johannesburg lose the ability to drive in the rain or even mist. I am looking forward to winter as it is my favourite season!!

This rain has caused a lot of havoc throughout the country. People love the rain, but this is not what anyone has in mind when they say they wish it would rain. While rain is essential for the earth, we must realise that too much rain does have a negative effect, for eg. It damages the farmers' crops and therefore they cannot produce food.

So rain has its pro's and con's, and the rain we have experienced in the last two weeks, definitely is not the rain that brings forth blessing, but rather that of destruction, and therefore people have had enough.

I am very grateful, that i have not been effected negatively by all this rain, and i'm thankful everyday for what I have, as little as it may be.

Its always lovely to receive some rain but it has been too much. I don't like to complain about the weather we receive but this rain has caused too much damage and my thoughts go out to those people who aren't as privileged and has lost family members or their houses with this rain. But things always happen for a reason...

A good Thunder Shower, (the one you turn off the TV just to listen to the beautiful sound hitting on the roof), every now and again is beyond therapeutic, But 14 days is enough to drive anyone mad. I don't know how the people in London handle such weather 3/4 of the year. I do love the rain but not for everyday living.

as a motorcyclist, i am not a big fan of the rain. The roads have been extremely slippery. i've been riding as if i've been transporting dodo eggs...

I have to agree with Juliet...We complain that it's not raining and then we complain that it's raining too much? The earth really does need the rain and so do we...Our dams and rivers need to stay full so that we have water to drink and cook with and bath in and swim in and whatever and the earth needs water so that our animals have food to eat and water to drink. I know there are lots of people suffering from the rain, but it's true that they keep on voting for the same government even though they never seem to change...

Melissa  said:
on Friday 14-Mar-14 11:24 AM
There has been a warnings out and people has been evacuated from some of their homes as the dams are over there full capacity.

Lizanne  said:

I also love the rain but enough is enough. When i turn out of our drive-way, i have to travel in the oncoming traffic lane to exit out street, so badly damaged the road is. I really do think about the unfortunate people living in shacks or on the streets and feel very sorry for them because they do not know of better. We really have to thank GOD for what we have.

Many 1st world countries and cities are successful and experience high rainfall. You can do anything in the rain with adequate facilities. If you want to live in a country with adequate facilities then vote for a government that can actually make a difference! The earth needs rain and let's be honest it has really not rained hard, it is little bits here and there.

Strangely enough we spoke about Cyclone Domoina in 1984 just yesterday, not that I was there in that time tho. The roads are terrible and this heavy rain is making it even worse and the potholes are just getting bigger every day.

I love the rain - but this is getting a little tiring. Hoping Monday it will have stopped - things are on hold because of this as you can do nothing in the rain

Juliet  said:

I love the rain and am enjoying it except for the traffic but life is never perfect. I do understand that some people are suffering but they keep voting for the government who doesn't build them adequate housing, doesn't build proper roads or provide adequate public transport so who is really to blame. I know it sounds harsh but please can we stop with the pity party.

Jade  said:

Sometimes I take for granted how lucky I am to have a solid roof over my head and a warm bed at night. Thank you for the reminder to be more grateful, I need to remember this before I open my mouth to complain about another day of rain.

The damage cause by the floods in the last two weeks is very sad and as you say we sometimes forget how privileged we are.
