Oscar Pistorius trial so far

I would love to hear your thoughts as to what you think of the trial so far.  There have been lots of highlights, and if everyone thought it was going to get boring after Oscar Pistorius’ tough time under cross-examination, they were at least amused by Roger Dixon being ripped apart. Dixon is the geologist who somehow managed to give evidence on a variety of fields that he clearly has no expertise in – ranging from the difference between the sound of a gunshot and a cricket bat hitting a door, lighting, wounds and post mortem results.

I was quite amazed that a man who wears glasses sought a scientific test to decide how dark it was in Oscar’s bedroom was to simply use his own eyes and then when they tried to recreate Oscar standing at the bedroom window and the bathroom window, they had somebody standing or kneeling 20 cm lower than Oscar would have been.  It was a bit of a comedy show and Oscar cannot have appreciated where his legal team spent his money insofar as this expert was concerned – which is always a problem when you have to sell your house, amongst other things, to pay for your legal fees.

His own evidence however was not very much better – he was argumentative, tried to be extremely clever in the witness box the entire time, continually explaining after giving answers that his version must be the truth because it did not necessarily suit his case.  It seems to be that he thinks everything is an accident – when he was at Tasha’s Restaurant a gun, which apparently cannot go off by accident, went off by accident in his hands without him touching the trigger and he has on a number of occasions said that the shooting of Reeva was an accident, although he has attempted to explain that, but there certainly seems to be some uncertainty or contradiction in his lawyers case as to him thinking he was shooting a robber and his explanation as to on what basis the gun went off in his hands.

I have to admit I have been extremely biased throughout this entire trial - giving Oscar the guilty of murder verdict based on his arrogant attitude in the past. My only hope now is that if he is guilty, he is convicted of same and that his tears and displays of breakdowns don't fool even the most expert of hearts. I do admit though, I would hate to be in the judge's shoes. As for Gerrie Nel, I like his confidence.

I was not impressed by Oscar when he blamed his legal team for some of the questions he did not have an answer to.I also think that he elaborated too much on some of his answers and should have just answered the questions asked instead of trying to give long explanations that just created more holes in his version.

Having said that though, I have decided not to "judge" Oscar on how he reacted on 14 February 2013 because I cannot relate to how he re-acted as I am an able bodied person and therefore do not know how a person with a disability would re-act in a possible "dangerous"
situation. So I'll wait for all the evidence to be presented before reaching a conclusion on the Oscar trial.

Agree with David on the culpable homicide conviction. I do however feel that this trial fro many people have become more about entertainment then seeking justice for an innocent life that was lost. People's fascination with tragedy and scandal is worrisome to say the least

it's been very interesting to watch Oscar's trial and I think the trial grabbed lot of people's interest

Cant wait to see what happens. Although I think that he is being treated unfairly because of the trial being aired, he committed murder and has to be punished for his actions.

I can't wait for trail to begin again. I love watching it. Sometimes I feel sorry for Oscar and the sometimes I don't. The point is he did kill someone. So personally I think he should sit in jail.

Oscar has confessed he did kill Reeva on that fatal Valentine Day! On taking to the stand he has contradicted himself on many occasions which is also understandable given the enormous pressure he was under. I think sport stars are under tremendous pressure to perform and I think it all got
to much for him and she maybe said something at the wrong time and he just lost control of the situation.Deep down a person wants to believe him but it is hard especially when he can clearly remember a lot of things but then he can't remember other matters "put" to him.

This is definitely a very interesting trial and Gerrie Nel is brilliant, we can expect that from someone being head of the Scorpions for so long. He knows what to ask and how to form his questions, all tough I think he might be to aggressive at some stages.

It has really been interesting watching Oscar's trial. Gerrie Nel did a brilliant job on cross-examination and I can't wait for Judgment.

I really stopped following after I heard Oscar's version and the cross examination. He has always been negligent and can't recall much which is really not doing anything for him. I would be more than just annoyed if I were him paying out of the roof for his legal team. Culpable homicide - They already got him to admit he made a mistake. Either way he thought there was a person behind that door so either way he committed murder.

Neither Oscar nor his defense team are doing his case any favours at this moment.

I am highly disappointed with the defense team... In the beginning when they were the cross examiners it was very interesting and i really thought that Oscar had chosen brilliant legal representation. But after hearing the attacks from the State, it is clear to me that the defense legal team is quite mediocre and the witnesses used are quite shocking. The outcome of this trial will most definitely be very interesting, as the State do have a very strong case and things don't look good for Oscar at all.

But at the end of the day a person was shot and killed and Oscar Pistorius, no matter how big he used to be, will have to bear the consequences of what he has done, and I too believe that he will be sentenced with culpable homicide.

Lost interest a long time ago - hear about it on the odd occasion. He can play the ignorance card all he wants, he killed somebody. The one thing i do not believe is that it was by accident - first thing anyone would do is check on the person you sleep next to is okay and there

I think the trial is very interesting, and WOW Gerrie Nel..dont ever want to be questioned by him. I really do feel sorry for him and both their families.
But the truth always comes out, so he will get what he deserves.

Was very interesting for me also, I am just glad i am not in his position. Still i couldn't help to feel sorry for the psycho. But again justice will be served.

I think it has been an interesting trial. It's amazing to see the kind of questioning and out of the box thinking.
I believe he should go to jail for a long time, but I must agree with Bianca R regarding our justice system.

It has been interesting to watch and partake as disturbing as that may sound. I must say that I do not have a lot of faith in our justice system and what we would expect is for him to actually spend time in prison. I am not too sure that this will even happen.

Thabitha  said:

I agree he wanted to be clever not to remember everything but on the other hand he can tell from the photo's that things were moved and I think his legal team is failing him

The Tasha's indecent was quite amusing. I have fired the gun he used at the Tasha'a indecent as the trigger has to be pulled with some force. There is no way it could just accidentally go off. And especially for a man who has dealt with guns his whole life and who has don't numerous competency courses. hmmm... Very strange. He should have just been honest with regards to the offences in tasha, out the sun roof, etc. then the could would be more likely to think he MIGHT be telling the truth. Its very interesting. Love watching the cross-examination especially. Skills! However, to me, according to dolus eventualis, he is guilty of murder no matter how remorseful he is.

This trial has been very interesting to watch and listen to. I honestly think Oscar is guilty but I will wait for the judgment.

I think Advocate Nel did a brilliant job of proving that he was thinking. Oscar has been going on about he wasn't thinking, then Advocate Nel asked him so why didn't you shoot at the shower head, then Oscar turned around and said because the bullet would of ricochet back, so Advocate Nel said oh so you were thinking. I sure would never in my life want to get on the bad side of Advocate Nel.
