I have noticed, more and more over the years, that to win the Oscar for best movie, or to win some of the acting awards, you have to be in a movie of significance. It has to tell a social or moral story and for example, Charlize Theron could not win by being beautiful – she had to be turned into an ugly woman in a role, before she could win an Oscar. Was Monster really her best acting performance ever or is the award a recognition of brilliant work over a few years, finally acknowledging one great performance? It is the same with this year’s awards, now that I have seen all of the movies, because it is hard for me to understand why 12 Years a Slave is allegedly better than Captain Phillips.
I understand that The Wolf of Wall Street may well have been less serious, and probably was not going to win the Oscar but personally, having watched Captain Phillips and 12 Years a Slave recently on BoxOffice on DSTV, I really thought that Captain Phillips was the better movie. Tom Hanks’ performance was excellent and it was really a gripping drama, which is also based on a true story, that I think anybody would enjoy watching. There was nothing wrong with 12 Years a Slave, but just found it was a very heavy movie, and while it is important to put across the messages that one has to see in heavy movies, it was unrelenting in terms of the violence, the assaults and the behaviour that went on during slave times. It tells the true story of a black man living in New York, who was kidnapped during the slave trade and sent away from his family to the plantations in the South where he experienced a truly horrific life until eventually he was freed. It needs to be seen and it is certainly a superb movie, but I preferred Captain Phillips and American Hustle. I would be interested to hear your thoughts if you have seen 12 Years a Slave or Captain Phillips.

I have been meaning to watch these movies for a while now, but lately I have been so preoccupied with other outdoor activities and away over weekends. So at the moment I have no substantial input or comment to make until I have watched these films personally.

Sorea, The Book Thief is an absolutely brilliant book and I also saw they have made a movie of it and I will definitely be going to see that movie. Those are the type of movies I really enjoy

I have not watched any of these movies. I am reading an interesting book, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and hear they turned it into a movie.

I still want to watch Captain Phillips. I was told it is a good watch and I can understand. Tom Hanks is absolutely brilliant. I haven't seen 12 Years a Slave either. I don't know if I would be able to though.

I did not have a chance to watch both of those movies, but the movie Captain Phillips I would love to watch very soon. Tom Hanks is brilliant actor, I grew up on his movies. All his movies are masterpieces.

*Possible Spoiler Alert*
Captain Phillips was an unbelievable movie. I completely agree that it was disappointing that Tom Hanks or the director was not given some recognition from the Oscars. It is flummoxing to say the least.
I gave 12 years a slave a good try, but couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. It looked like a beautifully filmed movie, but a little heavy for movie night.
I guess what I loved about Captain Philips was that it wasn't a repetition of other movies or stories that have been done before. It was a new story based on a true occurrence. The acting was impeccable, I mean, it isn't possible not to get a little choked up at the end when he is getting helped by that medic and saying "i'm okay".
Needless to say, I highly recommend this movie.

Tom Hanks is a fantastic actor and is extremely talented, he is probably my favourite to watch. Captain Phillips was an incredibly good movie and I would watch it again. Tom Hanks has that ability to share his emotions with you through his acting and that is truly something remarkable which a lot of actors cannot get right. If Tom gets an Oscar, he is extremely deserving of it!

I would have to watch both movies first before I can give an honest opinion. From the sound of it they both seem very good though

I must agree, I much rather enjoyed Captain Phillips and still keep telling people to watch it. As you said 12 years a slave there was far too much violence and I really didn't like watching it. Not a very comfortable watch. It was brutal and sad. Definitely an eye-opener to the unimaginable true horror of slavery. I'd still like to read the book! Captain Phillips is captivating, I was kept on my toes, it wasn't too brutal. Tom Hanks deserves an Oscar for his role. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I felt his pain and how drained he was. He did a great job!
