Election results

The election results were pretty predictable, but the election was certainly conducted in a very good spirit and I think South Africans are masters at this.  You could see the reaction in the Rand – which went, in 24 hours, from when the election began until the results were trickling, from R10,52 to R10,32 to the Dollar and that means if it stays that way, we will be rewarded with lower petrol prices at the end of this month again.  It is a sign of international confidence in South Africa that we have once again pulled off a peaceful election.

It is certainly not a sign of confidence necessarily in the ruling party, and one only has to look at the election results in Gauteng over the last 10 years to realise that the ANC is being sent a message that they must shape up or accept that in about 10 to 15 years they will be voted out of power.  Ten years ago the ANC received 68% of the votes in Gauteng that is now down to 53,5% already.  It is amazing how predictably we are following precisely the patterns that have happened in other countries where the liberation party has slowly lost favour and the best example would be Zimbabwe where the ruling party’s majority support comes, without belittling anybody, from rural people who are generally far poorer and less educated.  They have lost support in the urban areas and when one looks at Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria you see exactly the same pattern slowly happening in South Africa as well.  If one takes poorer provinces and more isolated towns, the ANC’s support is almost as strong as ever, but it is in the urban areas where city dwellers, who are generally more sophisticated and better educated, are beginning to get fed-up.  I think there is still a lot of loyalty towards the ANC, and I fully understand that, but unless they cut down on corruption and improve themselves considerably in terms of economic policies and job growth, I think they are going to run into problems.

The population is not entirely naïve, and there is a limit to how many times you can campaign on the basis of 6 million new jobs.  I cannot believe that anybody truly believes that in 5 years’ time we will have 6 million new jobs, but the ANC has promised that and so let’s hope for the sake of the country that a miracle happens and somehow they deliver on this particular promise.  Of course, and that is a part that always worries one, there are other lessons to be learnt from Zimbabwe and that is when all else fails and you cannot deliver jobs and prosperity, then you can start blaming white people and start threatening to nationalise everything and deal with things that way.  That is probably more the approach of the EFF, who not only have learnt nothing from Zimbabwe, but greatly admire Robert Mugabe.  I don’t believe we would ever go down that route, because we have seen how disastrous it is economically and when we have such a perfect case study, just north of our country, on what not to do, it would really be foolhardy to try and imitate anything that the leader of our neighbouring state did!

No election result will ever be perfect if it is based on a paper system with human beings counting after. In the greater scheme of things, I believe the election went as fair as could be.

I was shocked with the results, I knew the ANC would won but thought the DA wouldve done better. Now we just have to wait another 4 years!

I am sure there would've been better results for the other parties if there weren't so many votes that has been thrown away. Once again it shows you how corrupt all of them are because they want the party to win that promise other people things that they can not keep.

The results are exactly what I expected.

I think that for all democracies, it is important that there are strong opposition parties to keep the ruling party in line. So whether I agree with the EFF and DA's policies or not, it is good to see that the ANC has lost some support.

I actually can't believe how many people still follow the ANC??? I am however happy to see that DA did so well in Joburg this time and when the Municipal votes come the DA stands a very good chance for Johannesburg and that's all we need at the moment, just a few area's to see the change then the next votes will be more.

So what is the use of voting when they are being scaly anyways? Really upsets me, I am impressed to see what the outcome was though. Hopefully four years from now DA will win the election.

I was disappointed that ANC still got as much support as they did, that is if the figures are correct and honest, but at the same token it's a very positive sign that they have never-the-less lost support and that their strong opposition has gained support all round it's given my hope for this country. EFF is a concern..

I am happy to see that the ANC is loosing voters/supporters. Hopefully with the next election the ANC will learn its lesson and realize that the people of this country is no longer on their side.

To be quite honest, I still don't know who to vote for. Do any of the parties know how to govern a country? I was quite interested to see the Western Cape's votes. Yes majority voted DA, but there were many votes for ANC as well. Are there people in WC that want the DA out? Why?

I do not believe that these are true figures considering that Ballot papers were reported in areas where they possibly weren't even counted. I am very disappointed that many people still have faith in the ANC with all its corruptive ways. But I am proud of the people who did vote for a Change and DA is showing good results at least. My worry is how well EFF did in their very first election.

It is a pleasure to see the ANC loose some votes because all they have done the past years is empty promises. I went to Zimbabwe the week of the 28th of April and let me tell you it is not cheap they have road blocks on every 500 meters and the speed is 60 if you drive 61 or 120 or whatever the case might be they charge you R200 or 20us dollars and you must pay on the spot. It is so expensive there that you pay R48 a 2 liter of coke and R42 for 2 bags of ice. So i rally do not hope that we are going to end up like Zimbabwe with the empty promises.

Not much can be said about this election....pretty disappointing at the fact that there were so many votes thrown away, hidden etc. Would be nice to have a fair vote and not be like Zim. But yes, to an extent - the fact that the ANC lost so many, just shows you that change is happening....everything takes time

I agree with Lucretia. Were those people in Alex even allowed to vote again because that would only be fair. I'm not too impressed by the percentage that the ANC has gone down by, i still feel like these votes were somehow still cheated.

There are many loyal ANC supporters but many of those ANC supporters have either gone to the new kid on the block, EFF or decided to go with DA! I don't think the counting was accurate with the ballot boxes being found in Alexander as well as people in hospital's not been given an opportunity to vote - yet prisoners get the opportunity. I am really pleased however to see the area I live in was dominated by DA and DA only improved this year. I hope we do not turn into a Zimbabwe!

It is motivating to see how the ANC has lost votes across the country but at the moment I still feel very despondent regarding the recent elections. The results of the elections show me that the majority of the citizens in our country are happy to live in poverty and with a government ruling that is corrupt and dishonest and they seem to have no problem at all with that. On the other hand, the ANC strives on the uneducated people in our country, the uneducated citizens are too afraid of change because life may very well go back to the way that it was before 1994. This is where the ANC get their majority of their votes from, the uneducated - they would rather live in poverty and know that pre 1994 is not coming back. There is not realistic thinking and this is how the ANC likes their supporters - uneducated and easily lied to.

I am also very pleased that the ANC have lost a lot of their followers. We did know that they would win this election, as it was inevitable, but hopefully they will now realise that they are going to lose more and more followers if they don't live up to their promises and put some serious strategies into place. I am very glad that i made my mark for our country, although the party i voted for did not get the majority vote, my vote made a difference in the end. I still have hope for our country, and i do believe that if we can just work together, we will see huge change.

I think the DA did well this election, if you look at the stats, the DA went up in support in almost every province, with the smaller parties loosing support. I think its great that the ANC has opposition, I mean isn't that the point of a democracy? The DA gaining support in Gauteng shows the dissatisfaction with the ANC. I don't have a problem with the ANC if they actually delivered on their promises, but they are failing and I hope they either up their game or the DA is eventually voted in.

It is encouraging to see the decrease in support for the ANC in the Gauteng region, and I am sure in time, as you have stated in about the next 10 - 15 years the ANC will be voted out of power. Then this country can pick itself up and flourish in its endless potential it has to offer all the people of this wonderful Country.

Lucretia  said:

Did the ruling party really only go down by 14.5% or do the ballot boxes that were found in Alexander tell a different story. The elections may be free and fair, but is the counting by the IEC truly that?????

Juliet  said:

I was very pleased to see how the ANC has lost some power in Gauteng. I just hope their previous supporters are not now voting for EFF who strongly believe in nationalising everything and I don't agree that the example of Zimbabwe would put them off because as usual they will think they can do it better, it won't happen to us etc. I think Cape Town is the best run city in this country and I will continue to support the party who has the foresight and vigilance to deliver that quality of life to me as a citizen
