Eating two servings of seafood every week

The Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency in America have announced that they are going to make a new recommendation for food to be eaten by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.  They are going to recommend about three servings of low mercury seafood a week to be eaten by such mothers which would include light canned tuna, salmon, shrimp and cod.  Reports have found that about one in five women in America ate very little fish or none at all and studies have shown that women who consumed fish have children with higher IQ’s and better cognitive development than children born to women who do not.

They say that the studies are very consistent in this regard in that while there are benefits to fish oil and Omega-3 fatty acids, they do not have the same benefit as actually eating fish.  The FDA is also recommending that young children eat a weekly minimum of two fish servings. Certain fish, which are high in mercury should not be eaten when women are pregnant and that would include sharks and marlin may also be added to the list in future.

Doctors who have done studies on the benefits have been disappointed by the recommendation, because they don’t think it goes far enough saying that they believe, for it to be effective for child development, you need at least three servings a week.  Fish like salmon can often be an expensive meal, but when you read about the benefits like that, it is one of those meals you can’t afford not to feed your children.  In many respects we have all become used to cheap food to the extent where poisons like alcohol and cigarettes cost more than many foods, but it does not make sense that good food is cheap and there are many other things you can cut out of your budget long before giving up on eating decent quality, fresh and healthy foods.

I am obsessed with sea food, and I also wonder, like Angelique said, if too much fish is bad for you. The fact that it is healthy, doubt it could be that bad for anyone. Sushi over chicken any day thank you.

I was born on the cost of the Black sea, and the fish was always more affordable to eat then any other food. Prawns, crabs, tuna, black sea fish and mussels - miss so much that time! I do not think that we are spoiled so much here in Johannesburg - the prices on the sea food and fish are ridiculous, and the way they deliver this fish in the shops - we do not know how long this fish was in the freezer.

With my first pregnancy I made an effort to eat lots of fish and my daughter does seem to be fairly smart. (or maybe that's just good genes-lol). I have also now again cut out on more red meat and replacing it with fish-Im so glad to be pregnant because I now again have the perfect reason to eat fish instead of meat.

interesting information to have when your having children or raising them as to what is good for them. I personally don't eat sushi and any kind of raw fish, but I will certainly keep this in mind

I am picky about the type of fish that I eat and cannot stomach sushi or pilchards. I prefer hake, kingklip and smoked fish, especially with some yummy veggies

This is definitely not a problem for me, in fact I prefer fish over meat anyday! I wonder if too much fish is a bad thing. There is so many different ways that you can eat fish and we are definitely spoiled for choice so there is no reason for one not to incorporate it in their meals.

An important note to make is that it is not only expensive seafood like prawns and salmon. This blog is based on an American article and neglects to mention more affordable and just as beneficial seafood that is readily available in SA such as sardines and pilchards

I am glad that they are starting to advocate a more balanced diet to everyone. All these fad diets and cutting out certain food groups are extremely unhealthy. I understand minimizing the risk of contaminated foods for certain people (eg pregnant ladies) but at the end of the day if you practice healthy food preparation methods that should be fine as well. Moderation has always been the key. And I might not be the biggest fan of fish, but I do like sea food and am happy with the research that is being done to monitor the nutritional habits of a child from conception onward. It will only help in the long run.

I am a fish a holic. I personally love fish, and eat at least twice a week a good helping of Kingklip or plate of prawns, its amazing, and on most weekends Sushi has become my staple diet. As a child I loved fish fingers, and my mother would prepare fish for dinner once a week.

I have no problem eating fish, I actually enjoy the taste. Feel sorry for the people who do not like fish, that have no idea know what they are missing out on.

If I could eat sushi & seared/ smoked salmon everyday, I would be very happy but probably very broke. I absolutely love eating seafood with the exception of oysters.

I know that a lot of my friends despise fish and all seafood and always have. It must have been difficult for their parents knowing how healthy it is to try convince them to eat it.

My child has vitamins every night, you cannot always get them to eat what you want them to and the one vitamin is the daily intake of fish oils etc.

This is a fascinating study, fish has always been called brain food and I remember my mom convincing me that I would be smart if I finished all of my fish as a child. Although the meal may be a little more pricey than others, your child's development must surely be worth it.

I remember when growing up my parents used to say eat your fish you will be intelligent, I thought that was just their way of making us finish food because who wouldn't want to intelligent anyway. Now I understand the reasoning behind.

No wonder my little baby is so clever!! That was one of the things I craved the most in my pregnancy, was fish and sushi and i must say, I ate quite a lot of it. My little girl is also loving to eat any sort of fish. I am now so glad to hear that it is actually healthy for them!

If fish fingers counts as one of the healthy servings then I don't have to worry about my child. She loves fish fingers. When I was pregnant my doctor said I can eat anything I just should not over do it. So I ate fish, even sushi.
