Much has been made about the decision by the new Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, to look into the e-toll situation. The problem, before people get too excited, is that this is not something that actually falls under the Gauteng government and in fact SANRAL falls under the Department of Transport, so it is a national issue, and not just a Gauteng decision. There is no doubt that Gauteng will certainly have influence and persuasion, but it is still a long shot that the e-toll system is set aside.
One can certainly imagine that it is unlikely that the e-toll system will expand to any other areas, given its unpopularity, but I don’t think that one can bet that it is about to be scrapped in a year or so. Another problem of course is that SANRAL has signed an agreement with Electronic Toll Collection, known as ETC for short, for them to operate the e-toll system. SANRAL may well be in a position that they cannot get out of certain aspects of the contract now, other than at a prohibitive expense – which ultimately means we will pay for it one way or another.

Still don't like the e-toll and still won't pay the e-toll.

They must get rid of the e-tolls, I don't see how it is working. Lots of people don't pay.

I wish they would just get rid of this whole E-toll business. It's too bad that won't happen.

Other areas unlike Gauteng were actually given the option and they could vote so I do not see a further expansion at all.

I most certainly hope that with them taking on the system again there will be a small chance that it will go away. However they have done this before and they have failed but we can hold onto hope. I have an E-tag and I pay the discounts but I would be more than relieved if the system is scrapped.

Sigh, we hate Etoll, lets be honest! I doubt that E-toll will expand beyond Gauteng. I have yet to receive an account, luckily I rarely take the highway and prefer to take the Gautrain when I go to Pretoria. Scrap E-toll!

I have also received a couple of e-toll accounts and refuse to pay them. They can summons me to court, lock me up, i will still not pay my accounts or get an e-tag. I am a law abiding citizen but no one had a say to the e-toll system and maybe if they actually involved the public, this would have been a different situation.

They should ask the government for the money, they can take it out of the tax money they take from us every month and every year instead of using the tax money on extravagant homes for the president or new flashy cars for ministers. I'm over this e-toll story, just grateful I don't have to get on a highway to get to work.

I really hope they will just scrap the e-toll system, they want to waste even more money to get the people to pay. Ridiculous!

The maintenance and construction of new roads it is the government responsibility and we are already paying quit high tax which should cover government expense, but no people has to still pay extra for the e-toll. Next year the government representative will come up with some other idea and again will be other expense from our pocket - will never ends. The prices on food and basic things already went up so high thanks to all resent strikes - how we supposed to survive today?

They keep on sending accounts to my husband as well and he is also refusing to pay them, and all the accounts together is over R8000.00 already. So I really hope they stop this whole E-Toll thing

All I can say is I hope they fold like a flopped lemon meringue pie! We as citizens accept that things must be paid for, but constantly getting ripped off by your government is not an option.

Tolling Gautengs freeways is an unnecessary waste of billions of SA Tax payers money. I do realise the need to pay for the freeway improvements but this should be done with the least negative impact on the pockets of the public. If existing or new funding mechanisms are available, these should be considered and used, unless of course a valid reason is provided and is acceptable to society, i.e. the people who ultimately pay.
The installation of an elaborate and complex toll gantries, electronic tags in every vehicle & the revenue collection system for this specific project, means that users will pay not only the expense of the road construction but additionally, they must suffer the heavy and unnecessary burden of this specific toll collection system!

I am right behind Elektra on this one. I refuse to pay for e-tolls. I would like to see them send millions of summons' to all the people not paying. My whole family alone is not paying for e-tolls. I wonder how many other families out there are not paying either?!

I have received accounts, and will continue to refuse to pay, until I get a summons to appear in court. I am just soooo against the e-toll system.

I just can't see how E-tolls in future are going to be effectively implemented. One moment they are going to take a no tolerance approach to those who don't pay and the next, it is under review. It is obviously highly unpopular.
