We had a fairly serious tremor today and I would love to hear your thoughts and what you were thinking when it happened?
My first thought was its just a tremor, then it intensified and got worse and I recalled how my builder said we went overboard with the safety of the structure. In fact he told me years ago that the pilings and engineering were so robust that the offices would withstand "never mind an earthquake Michael, a nuclear strike". I think he exaggerated a bit but it certainly relaxed me. Then the walls started shaking more and I stood up. I then thought (sorry to the people below) that if I fell I would probably be more comnfortable in my chair and sat down again. Next time like my staff I will run outside!
Anyway, now that you have finished laughing, what did you think?

Clearly I missed the whole thing, I was sitting in court and I didn't notice a thing.

It was a really weird feeling having the earth shake underneath your feet. I must admit though that I was not scared, only curious about how it made me feel

I was stuck in the basement parking lot, so didn't really feel anything. After I heard about the earfthquake I thought at least I was safe in the basement, but realised later that there were two levels of vehicles above me that could have fallen on me-the thought alone scares me.
I have never really understood the reasoning behind hiding under a table when an earthquake strikes-wouldn't you then just be putting yourself in a position to be covered by more and heavier rubble if the table breaks?

I was terrified, it was first a little shake and I thought it was my imagination and then it came again for a longer time. Here is a huge structure with lights hanging from the roof over my head and it stated making weird sounds, I jumped up and ran!!

I was in my car on my way back from JHB High Court when my car started to shake all of a sudden. I first thought that I drove over someone or that there was something wrong with my car. Was a strange feeling I must say

The tremor had quite a significant impact on a mine in Orkney where the tremor was centred. Miners were trapped for quite some time before they were rescued. Scary!

Our infrastructure in South Africa is definitely not built to withstand such natural disasters! I actually thought to myself whilst driving through my complex that the precincts are built way too fast!

I don't think we in SA is not prepared for this kind of situation some say stay inside other says go outside maybe we should find out what the correct procedure would be in case there is a earthquake

My first reaction was to get out of the building, but if you read up on a few articles its much better to rather stay under your desk, and away from windows,Stay away from any cables that can fall over which is right outside the office... So at the end of the day don't panic an run which comes as a first reaction to many people... If another earthquake does hit I am still not sure what you should do, I really just hope that everyone will be fine and save.

It was quite weird to feel the ground shaking. But I think when it happens you need to run to a open place not near a building.

My friend's sister and brother died in the Armenian earthquake about 20 years ago. he still can not talk about it without crying. he survived because he was busy walking from school and was on the road , while his older siblings were still at school and the building collapsed. it was 7 Richter Scale.

I had no idea what to do when it happened, I think because we aren't familiar with that kind of situation, we have no idea how to react. I just carried on waiting for documents to be signed. The thought of jumping out of the window upstairs did not even cross my mind.

I wasn't majorly concerned when I felt the tremor but when it persisted it was a bit worrying. Some girls in the office jumped up in anticipation as to whether they should just sit down and wait for it to be over or whether they should run for safety out of the building. Was quite an experience

Luckily, I was catching a lift back to the office with the advocate on my matter and didn't feel a thing.
South Africa is in a very stable position geologically, so it is bizarre to think that it was an earthquake in the true sense i.e. that we are near the boundaries of tectonic plates that are shifting Surely it is a result of many years of widespread mining? But that does not explain how it was felt as far as Durban and Zimbabwe. I just hope that this one was the last one. I live in an apartment on the 4th floor on top of a cliff and would not be too secure if it happened again.

I really though it was only in our office, when it started. I thought the computer server was busy exploding, that's where all the shaking came from. And all of a sudden when all the ladies ran out of the office i then realize it was a small tremor. Lol i will never forget Stephanie's eyes she was so scared and screamed " Come we need to leave, we are on top off the building, we will die first". Was very funny!!!

These seem to be happening quite a bit these days - and to think it reached all the way to Durban. A man died in Klerksdorp as I am listening to the news at the moment. I will definitely be one of those that run outside just to be safe. They say that it is happening more frequently and more powerfully every time.

To be quite honest, I never felt a thing. I was driving at the time. Unfortunate as I would have like to have experienced something like that.

At first I thought my leg had gone dead from sitting funny. I put my foot flat on the ground and the ground shook again. I actually said 'Is it just me or is it shaking?' Lol... I even thought it was the Gautrain.
I wonder if it will get any worse because that was definitely not the first tremor we have experienced.

Now that I am finished laughing! I thought someone was shaking my chair, then it continued and I immediately thought another tremor or gautrain. I saw everyone running outside yet I was sitting here typing away, the thought of the building collapsing never even crossed my mind. It reminded me of evacuation and fire drills back in school. Certainly weird not ever expecting this to ever happen and hopefully in the future it doesn't happen. End of the world or just global warming?
