The Ebola breakout in West Africa is very concerning. Everyday we hear of more people that are ill and dying and the disease seems to spread exponentially. One person went to Nigeria with it and has subsequently died and already now they have 8 people who that person was exposed to who have Ebola. If those 8 people were exposed to another 8 people each, one can very quickly work out the maths!
One is caught between hoping that this is just the media hyping us something and hoping that it stays in West Africa or being terrified of something far worse. The problem with diseases starting in such poor countries and which are so poorly controlled is that they get out of hand, they can spread easily and the state of emergency and lockdown may not be enough. We have all seen the movies about global plagues and sooner or later we are probably going to be hit with one, but you always hope that it is far later and not now! The consequences of a disease like this getting out of control would be nothing short of, apart from killing hundreds of millions of people, bringing the world economy to a standstill and essentially lead to small groups of people living in isolation, stopping work and all interaction for fear that they will die. As it is we have been treated to photographs and images of people collapsing in streets in Guinea, where nobody will now help anybody who has fallen over in the street because if they do have Ebola it would be death for the person helping, not to mention all their friends and family.

The Symptoms of Ebola is very quick to notice and they say its visible from day 2- 10 but it can also take up to 30 days to show and by that time so many people can be effected in fact the whole family... The scary part is that no one knows how exactly this disease is transferred...

Its scary to see that even today we could all be subject to something so terrible and there is nothing we could do to stop it

I researched the signs and symptoms and was horrified by the affect of it. The pictures alone made me have chills. I follow up with the News regarding it because this disease is in Africa and could possibly reach us. Very nerve wrecking to even think that it can just take one person to spread this disease like wildfire. I don't know how true the story was but apparently there were two cases of Ebola in Kempton Park.

i have just read that they have traced patient 0( the first person who got sick with Ebola) and it was a 2 year old boy, nobody knows how he got the disease but they suspect fruit bat's dropping on the fruit and the child has eaten the fruit, or may be he played with a dead bat and got blood on this hands. they can not interview his family because all his 3 small sisters, his mother and grandmother died within 3 weeks of the toddler falling sick. the article shows how people later on people came to grandmother's funeral from other villages, brought virus to their villages and so on. nurse who treated the boy later brought virus to hospital and infected everyone there including doctors and later doctors would infect more patients etc. those areas are now cordoned but it is a cruel medieval way of blocking the disease from spreading because they basically wait for people in the blocked zone to die out just like in those zombi movies.

I read an article about Ebola and they stated that the media is actually blowing this whole thing out of proportion. The virus can only be transmitted with bodily fluids and it is apparently not airborne.
However, with that said - I still sincerely hope it doesn't come near SA.

This is quite a frightening thought when you think about it. And could turn into a real threat very quickly. 3rd world countries that do not have the resources to maintain and control such a rapid spreading disease will surely see destruction of magnitude proportions. And to top it off South Africa not to mentions its rural areas are definitely not ready for such an outbreak.

I am terrified at the thought that the virus may reach us and it is a high possibility that it can, I recently heard that some soccer team was over in the infected area and they have since returned to SA. Who is to say that none of them contacted the virus? Once 1 person has it in a city / country, it spreads like wild fire.
