An infection that really knocks you

Gastroenteritis is one of those infections that one simply does not want. If you have young children however, you get subjected to it quite often because there is invariably a new strain that goes around at school and they bring it home to you.  It seems that teachers eventually become immune to it, but having suffered a recent bout of gastroenteritis, I was reminded how helpless our bodies can become in a matter of hours, when suffering a bad infection.  One can literally not even have the strength to walk to the bathroom, and in some cases have to crawl on your hands and knees to get to the bathroom, and the amount of weight that you lose in 12 hours, as well as strength, is unbelievable.  The most common cause of gastroenteritis for adults is Norovirus and for children it is Rotavirus but other causes include bacteria and parasites, but those are less common.

The key, when gastroenteritis is going around, is to use fresh water, wash your hands all the time and when you are able to keep the fluids down and to take enough fluids.  Gastroenteritis kills a lot of people, especially in poorer countries and according to Wikipedia, and here is a horrific thought, is more common in areas where a lot of people spend lots of time together, like cruise ships!  This makes me think about the cruise ship a year or two ago when they lost power and their toilets no longer functioned!  The good news is that there are some vaccines against gastroenteritis that are currently being developed and so maybe the saying, “No guts, no glory” will be able to continue having the meaning it does today whereas apparently originally it related to gastroenteritis and the role it has played in many military campaigns.

Nothing beats this infection, I hate it, you feel so drained and tired . I agree having a clean lifestyle may possibly reduce your chances of getting sick, and with out a doubt vitamins really do boost your immune system, I hardly get sick since Im on vitamins

I had that infection and it is not fun at all. Most important thing to do is keep hydrated.

I have never had gastroenteritis, but it sounds absolutely awful.

Worked as a pre school teacher for three years. Know all about it.Takes a toll on the little ones.Just have to keep them Hydrated as much as possible. Ultimately there is no real cure right now only medication to relieve some of the symptoms if you can keep it down that is, otherwise just have to wait it out..

I got quite a bad knock of gastroenteritis in early June. I was so so ill. Would not wish that on my worst enemy. Eventually i landed up in hospital as i was so badly dehydrated and one simply does not have the energy to even pick yourself up to get to the bathroom. Not fun at all!!!

I really don't want to experience this kind of infection. Gastro is bad for your Immune System.

I also had it last week but mine wasn't that bad. I was so confused when I got it because I am always washing my hands and keeping clean... Shows you that you will never know who has it and hasn't done the same.
There really isn't much you can do but you just have to keep hydrated...

This is one of the worse illnesses to get. It sounds like a horror movie having to crawl to the bathroom. The best thing is literally to keep your hands clean and if you have gastro to continuously disinfect the toilet every single time you use it. It probably is a mission when you already have no energy but it absolutely has to be done to get rid of the germs. One needs to stay hydrated or else you can never get better. People should not go to school or work when gastro hits because that 'bowel movement' (for lack of a better word) can wipe out the entire company for a few days!

ooh, that's terrible. I once had a bad strain and ended up in hospital, so its not fun. I definitely think washing your hands is so important and this helps prevent the spread of the infection.

This is an infection that I often suffer with and it really is not fun. Key is to keep hydrated and I find that those Re-hydrate sachets are extremely helpful to restore your body.

I do not even know off this infection but it sounds terrible. To crawl to the bathroom? Very terrifying. I cannot think how people must feel in the poorer countries getting this infection. So helpless! The weight loosing process does not sound too bad though. Luckily I have a strong Immune System, did not get sick once this winter planning on keeping it this way.
