We all read about hard drives crashing, but I got to the point where, to be honest, I never thought it would happen. I don’t think between all my staff members’ computers and my personal computers I’ve ever actually had a proper hard drive crash and I read on the websites of most of these companies which assist with that, that in 91% of the cases they recover the data. It makes you believe that you don’t need to keep a back-up until it is your personal computer, which has all your children’s and family photographs of the last 6 or 7 years, which you never backed-up, that goes.
Unfortunately, I then discovered that my hard drive was amongst the 9% that cannot be recovered because allegedly the heads clamped down on the drive – whatever that may mean. In future I am going to set up my computers on a Raid 1 setting, which is basically to have two hard drives and whenever you save anything, it is automatically mirrored to the other hard drive. Before facing the wrath of my family for losing all of the photographs, I did have one saving grace, although it is a lot of work to download the pictures, and that is about a month or two before the hard drive crashed, I decided to take up Google on their continuous offers to store all of my photos on the Cloud and uploaded about 85 gigs of my photos to the Cloud. That is a lucky break but the only problem is downloading them all back again, but at least they have not been lost forever – which many of my standard documents have.

I also lost a lot of photos, books music etc when my hard drive crashed. It's a pain to get all that back again and it sad to lose the photos it's memories that will always stay in your mind but would'v been nice to have something to look at. I have also learn the hard way and regularly try to back up my stuff.

You need to always have a back up of your backup. Today there are so many sites like Cloud or facebook or any other social media that most likely has your images. Otherwise the best thing to do is continuously backing everything up and perhaps keeping a server (if you can afford) or your back up hard drive in a safe for one day if you ever need it. Ultimately you can always print each and every picture you take.

I agree 100 percent to back up information. Not only for personal use but especially all companies. They should not risk loosing important information when running a business. It could be a very negative impact and loss, to loose important documents and especially if they do not have hard copies of the work.

It's always better to have a backup on some of your important stuff. You never know what can happen to your hard drive.

This happened to me ones, I lost everything, all my photos and work. Lucky they could retrieve some of the data but not everything. Very frustrating, spare yourself the effort and cost, backup regularly.

My husband has a external hard drive and once a month we would back up our phones. I think it is most likely to be some ones worst nightmare should you not back up and you computer of phone crashes.

I only recently started backing up my information and Google has some great options. I also back my pictures up with them and apparently their Google Drive allows you to keep documents as well. I haven't tried the drive, but will consider it.

That is incredibly lucky that you are able to access your irreplaceable photographs. I do think that backing up everything is essential, as it can be such a nuisance to replace all your documents, but even more devastating if you lose your invaluable photographs.

I've been through this before, but luckily was able to retrieve the lost data. Since then I now save all my personal or any other information on an external hard drive. And once every 3 months just back up anything new.
Only problem is my external hard drive is just about full and will need to invest in a new one with a bigger memory. Preferably a 2 Terabite external.

One of my hard drives crashed before and it was a very unpleasant feeling, it takes you so long to collect everything on it whether it is movies, series, books etc. Its a collection and to get everything back again is a nightmare!

Really good idea to start backing my stuff up! I made the mistake of not backing up my Iphone and I ended up loosing all my contacts, not great trying to get everyones number again.
