I think that NUMSA’s expulsion from Cosatu is going to be very good for South African politics. I am sure there is a long way to go with this, and there are other Trade Unions that are also considering their options, but Cosatu has not exactly been a great success in politics and nor has the ANC recently. NUMSA was the biggest Trade Union left within Cosatu, with some 350 000 members and their leaving Cosatu is in fact a major deal. That is not just some small split.
It will be interesting to see if Zwelinzima Vavi stays with Cosatu or he heads to NUMSA as most people would expect. It also illustrates the troubles that Jacob Zuma, the President, has brought to the ANC – the only split in the previous 95 years of its history that the party had, was when the PAC split from them way back in 1959. During Zuma’s leadership the ANC has already seen people leave to form COPE, next we’ve had the EFF breakaway and we really have to see the NUMSA breakaway from Cosatu in the same light and it is no doubt ultimately going to have an impact on South African politics – and I believe it is going to have a good impact.

No one has truly benefited by a union not employers or employees. They are trouble makers with no amicable solutions to bring to the table.

I am all for doing away with UNIONS completely. Since the unions have been "fighting" for the workers, we have more workers who are, in fact, unemployed. Sadly the workers cannot see this and will continue paying their union fees, until they too no longer have work.

We need change in this country, and I do hope that it will be for the better as you seem to think it will be. I agree with Lourien, they do make more noise than achieving a goal!

I honestly think Trade Unions is one of the factors that is making the country go backwards than what they are actually supposed to help our workers. All the strikes are almost always violent and cause more damage to organisations as well as the country. Yes they stand for the workers but they are certainly making more noise than actually achieving any thing.

Numsa has made a statement that they wont accept its expulsion from Cosatu without a fight. There seems to be a sentiment that the ruling party is "selling the country" and that although the ANC had strong ties with communist groups in Apartheid, that they are no longer a party for the workers. Perhaps the EFF will gain more popularity now.
