South Africa should introduce a sex offenders' register

I was quite interested to see that in other countries, and you can find an example on the following link, that sex offenders are registered.  This means that if you move to a city or a suburb, you can look up what sex offenders live in that area, and it will not only name the person, but give you their height, approximate weight, hair colour, eye colour and also give you their address.  In many cases they are not allowed to live, for example within half a mile of a school or a church.

It becomes a problem for the value of your property if, after having bought, one of your neighbours is registered as a sex offender.  It certainly violates their privacy, but the argument would be that when you have molested children, for example, that you have no entitlement to privacy, even after you have been let out of jail.  It obviously works on the premise that there is no “cure” for such people, and it is better if everybody in the community knows who they are and where they live, so that the community can help watch the person and keep their children away from them.  Most of the offenders appear to be in their fifties and older, and I am not sure whether that is a function of how long it takes for them to be caught, but I do think it is something that South Africa should consider introducing.

I don't have any sympathy..... No register will change who they really are ... Even when you know their is maybe one in your neighborhood what are you going to do? They will do it again ....

I think a registry might help but I don't think it will work here. Who knows though? #SipsTea

A registry is a start but are these people in our country even caught when you could pay to have your criminal record wiped clean?

I agree with most of the comments, a registry is not good enough, these people need to be separated from society.

Good idea! But the list will be endless!

I just honestly think that anyone who has sexually abused a child should be put into an institution for the rest of their lives. There is obviously something very wrong with them, and no other child should ever be put in danger. A lot of people in South Africa are underprivileged and would not even have access to this register.

the problem with pedophiles that majority of them abuse their family members and the truth does not come out for a long time , so before they go on that registry they must have tortured a child for a long time.these people are so sick in the head that if not execution may be only lobotomy will fix them? may be castration? add to the registry and do chemical castration at the same time.

This is a great idea, they must be tortured and killed.

I definitely agree with David, we do not need these people in society a list is not enough.

Good idea, Just imagine how many people will be on that registry. I agree with David.

I am in agreement with same 100%. In fact, I have always said put a tattoo on their forehead so that this way everyone would know. Hopefully this route would make a sex offender think twice before committing the deed. Child molesters have no place in our society and if you think I am being harsh, remember not only are their lives already damaged but they DAMAGE the lives of their VICTIMS and the victims families.

@ David: I am surprized by your comment when you were completely against the death penalty saying "even more NB is that many people have posthumously been proven to be innocent. how do you pardon a dead person?"

What about a person who was found guilty incorrectly and is then eaten by a lion?

Couldn't agree more with David. Either that or they should all live in their own little community/estate/compound where none of us ever have to have contact with them and they never have to leave the compound.

Sex offenders and monsters who molest children really are the scum of the earth.

When i lived in Walkerville i went on Google to see if there are sex offenders in that area as I saw in a movie that you can look and it actually showed me that there are sex offenders in my area and i know it is right as i know most of the streets names there,so South-Africa has registered sex offenders.

I agree with David. I do not want to sound like a pessimist, but there is no rehabilitation for sex offenders. In almost every single profile the offender escalates. And yes, I am referring to serial offenders, the paedophiles, the rapists etc and not those who are protected by the 'Romeo and Juliet' laws.

I think it is a great idea for South Africa to consider. I can imagine how scary our registry would be as we have such a high crime rate and our rape and sexual offences crime rate is one of the highest in the world.

I agree with David, however we know that will never happen so I agree it's been long over due, they shouldn't just have it for sex offenders, they should have it for all criminal's so that you know where they are and can prevent them from ever doing that ever again. But that won't happen considering our own President is one himself.

Clare  said:

I think that this is a good idea because this can give you like a wider view on who you live next to because you don't know what they do in there time even though it invading space but if i have a child rapist next to me i wouldn't live there so i like it.

i don't agree with a registry.
they should be fed to lions and hyenas.
