Road Accident Fund payments slow

I have been interested to see some of the comments in the media recently attributed to the CEO of the Road Accident Fund.  He has given assurances, as if that were in question, that the Road Accident Fund will honour its commitments to pay claimants.  The article, which appeared in various media, was obviously based on a press release, because just about every newspaper printed the article in the same way and basically said that people will have to accept that payments are not going to be as quick as they were in the last two years and payments are going to be much slower.

That echoes the experience we’ve had since August this year, where essentially payments get slower each month.  The Road Accident Fund initially tried to indicate the one should advise them of matters that are only overdue by 60 days, now they seem to be interested in matters that are overdue by 90 days.  The CEO himself at one stage advised the media that the payments that have to be made exceeded their finances by R4,1 billion, and last month in a letter to me he indicated that that figure was now R4,5 billion.  The Road Accident Fund gets in about R1,8 or R1,9 million a month, depending on fuel sales, so unless government gives a lump sum allocation in the budget speech in February 2015, we are certainly looking at payments falling further and further behind.  The payments will of course be made, but just on the figures alone it would seem that an average time frame for payments would need to be 3 months, and of course many payments will take longer than the average.  People whose cases have been settled and are waiting for their money from their attorneys will need to be more patient now than ever before, but they will receive the money eventually.

common sense tells all the client that if RAF says monies will be settled within 90 working days, automatically it is not entitled to exceed that period, and that in terms of the court processes one is certain that unpaid cases are many. but why cant RAF implement strategies that can help best to pay claimants within the promised time.

This is really not a nice situation for attorney and client. The clients wait so long for their matters to be come finalised then when it does they still need to wait another few months. There must be something that can be done other than the warrants we issue because the payments are going to fall even more behind.

People needs to move on with their lives and attorneys needs to grow their firms really this is nonsense

I hope something will be done so these payments can be paid sooner. The clients have been waiting patiently for a long period.Again the government knows nothing about client service.

There are obviously many flaws with the system and something needs to be done. The money is owed to these clients, and it is just ridiculous that they have to wait so long for it, when they already have been so patient during the lengthy legal process. As Kaylee said, they need this money to move on with their lives.

I agree with what Kaylee had to say, and adding to that Government again depriving its citizens of what they deserve, some if not most have been through a life changing ordeal and need this money to survive. Quite sad, our greedy Government.

Was watching the news a few months ago and that is exactly the problem the RAF is facing, the amount paid to them is too little compared to the amount the Attorneys are settling for. The Treasury needs to up the amount they give the RAF and this might not necessarily end but become a bit better - but alas - monies in this country go to the wrong place

Why do they get such a teeny weeny amount of money in each month?

Kaylee  said:

Sigh, another failing governmental body not meeting expectations. Its quite shocking how far in arrears the fund has gotten itself into. I feel sorry for people who have been seriously injured and really need the money to move on with their lives. Hopefully, there will be provision made in the budget speech.

"The Road Accident Fund gets in about R1,8 or R1,9 million a month" - that is our average settlement. How are they to pay anything if their monthly income cannot even settle a bigger matter?

Anna  said:

Do government bodies ever offer efficient and speedy service? Better and more effective procedures need to be implemented at the RAF so that monies can be channeled to paying the settled matters in a timely fashion.

Slow payments are just another way in saying that the money is going some where else and not where its meant to be going.

The slow payment from the Road Accident Fund is certainly making life difficult for clients as well as attorneys. Clients are obviously aggravated as they are entitled to their money and are in need of same to survive and attorneys are constantly following up and issuing warrants with no success. I certainly hope for a miracle where payments will again speed up.
