There has been a lot of good news to start the year with. The most important of which is undoubtedly the petrol price, where after substantial decreases in recent months, we now have the biggest decrease ever. It is pity that the Rand has not been strong and is typically weak during this period because we really could have seen the petrol price coming down even more.
Petrol feeds directly through to inflation and hopefully this can help keep inflation down. In many respects, and particularly for those who don’t travel much, we don’t appreciate how cheap food for example, is in South Africa. Yes, we do get ripped off on cell phone calls and internet, etc compared to the rest of the world, but amongst the places where we score is the cost of owning or building a home in South Africa which is far cheaper than overseas and certainly the cost of food with particular reference to the basics like vegetables and fruit are far cheaper here. I am not going to go into the fact that we have a better climate than most places, because that is true as well – because the focus of this blog is the financial situation. I certainly hope that we continue to see petrol decreases, but I cannot see the price of oil staying so low for too long. We need to see some Rand strength to back it all up and hopefully, although unlikely, we can pray for no tax increases in the budget speech in the third week of February.

I couldn't believe when it decreased by R1.24 or something. It sounds like nothing but it makes a huge difference. I remember filling my tank for R722 once last year and when I filled up in Jan it only cost me R540!!! Almost R200 less... Hopefully it lasts a long time, which is not likely.

At least we started this year with very positive news, for me and my family with lots of traveling every day far - price decrease good saving for the family budget. But the question is for how long this price will stay this way, while dollar is so high at the moment. I think I will pray as well for no changes in the tax politics.

Honestly... I cannot handle the climate here. Not only is it uncomfortably boiling in the summer but we no longer have a true winter anymore, with the average winter temperature being between 15 and 20`C. Having spent the festive season in temperatures ranging between -5 and 5`C I can say, without a doubt, that I'd prefer cooler summers and true winters.
With regards to the exorbitant costs of cellphone usage, it's absolutely ridiculous that the service providers are allowed to charge these fees in a third world country stricken with poverty.

It is nice to have a lower petrol price. Especially in the beginning of the year when everybody spend just a little bit too much over the holidays. Everybody benefits from employees to employers looking at cutting costs a little in the lean months.

It is fantastic news that the petrol has gone down, and you really do see the difference when filling up. Although, one cannot help but worry about the next increase. Of course we live on the hope that the next petrol price adjustment will be a decrease, but with the Rand going up and down we can never be too sure. I do hope that the petrol stays at this price for a long period of time and of course a further decrease is very welcome.
As far as food goes, yes we are very fortunate when it comes to fruits and vegetables, but still the price of food is quite expensive and the cost of living is just getting worse. All we can do, is hope for the best.

Was awesome when we put in petrol this morning to see the little lever rise as much as it did. It would be wonderful if it could stay like this, st least for a while

I can't remember when last I was able to fill my tank for less than R500! When the Petrol Attendant told me it was full at R450 odd I was shocked. The drop in fuel prices has really made a difference and one can only hope that it stays like this. Otherwise in terms of housing costs and food costs we are very fortunate - but we definitely make up for it with TAX!

my dream is that the rand goes down dramatically , like to R6-1$???
that would enable us to get overseas goods at cheaper prices and cost of travel would reduce .

Let's see how long this decrease lasts for....my guess is the next increase will be in mid February! I'd rather the petrol price goes up again than the tax rate

It really is a wonderful way to start the year, and all that money I now do not have to spend on petrol will get pumped straight into savings.

News of the petrol price decreasing is always music to my ears. It was really nice going into the new year knowing that we will be paying around R1 less for petrol. We certainly do benefit from low costs of fruits and vegetables from what I have heard from friends staying abroad. I hope that the interest rate is not raised at the upcoming budget speech however experts warned that the last few speeches wherein the interest rate remained the same, were possibly only for 2014 and they have warned that we are going to see interest rate hikes in early 2015.

With the petrol rice dropping, so should super markets and food stores be lowering their prices etc, as their transport cost are not that high any more.
