Zuma and ANC disappoint at SONA

I was terribly disappointed by what we saw at the State of the Nation Address, or like everything these days with an acronym, SONA for short.  Firstly, the ANC clearly had a plan to muzzle reporters and the public in the event that things got out of hand in the chamber.  They introduced devices that jam cell phone signals to stop people communicating with those outside Parliament.  Luckily, the parliamentarians were having none of that, and basically insisted that the speech could not proceed until the jamming devices were switched off. That was then attended to.  The EFF made the predictable fuss that one was expecting, and whether one agrees with them or not, because it was not the appropriate time to interrupt proceedings, there is no doubt that much of the nation is frustrated by Jacob Zuma’s continued ignorance of the Nkandla deal and trying to pretend that he did not want any of the upgrades while his own architect supervised them.

There is no doubt that the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, dealt with proceedings in a very high-handed and poor fashion.  She appeared to be reading from a script at times and was quite prepared to just escalate the situation as quickly as she could without actually reacting to what was actually going on in front of her.  The parliamentarians are entitled to ask questions and raise points of order, and she simply fobbed them off before they began speaking and essentially told them she knew what they were going to say, which she probably did, and had them tossed out.  That is not how democracy works.  It is certainly not democratic either to march in police carrying guns to remove people from Parliament and everybody will have to sit back and decide if this is the way that we want to proceed in South Africa.  The most scary part of course is that this is all about the ANC protecting Jacob Zuma and essentially where one man tearing the country apart at the moment.   Let’s be honest, it is not just about Nkandla, there is a background too of the bribes and the corruption charges, etc.

To be awfully honest listening to SONA and catching a glimpse of it on TV was both disgraceful and entertaining. Democracy does not exist and we have now seen it for ourselves. I applaud Pieter Mulder and the likes for not giving up.

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Animal Farm by George Orwell.

The last chapter of Animal Farm brings the entire novel to its logical, unavoidable, yet chilling conclusion. The pigs wholly consolidate their power and their totalitarian, communist dictatorship. This completely overwhelms the democratic-socialist ideal of Animal Farm.

We remain naïvely hopeful up until the very end. The gap between the peoples optimism and the harsh reality that is the Zuma administration creates a dramatic contrast.

The descent into tyranny has been gradual. The PEOPLE will need to descend the state into anarchy! A lawless, government-less state, so that we may start again from the very beginning. The beginning is a great place to start.

After watching the state of the nation I was so disgusted ...To think these people are running our country and that the President was laughing about it and can't even apologize for the inappropriate behavior to everyone. The State of The Nation speech well there's nothing to say because we already knew about everything and well after all the chaos no one even cared what he had to say....

I firstly have to say, at least the power manage to stay on during SONA. Other than that there were only disappointments. But we were expecting anything other than disappointment? What an absolute disgrace on "a democratic nation". I am all for a new president!

we are descending back into a police state.
we must remember what Nelson Mandela said: when the ANC do you what the apartheid government did to you, you must do the ANC what you did to the apartheid government.
it is time for the ANC to go.

It is disappointing to see what happened at the SONA last Thursday. It is also disappointing to see the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, not knowing what was going on in and around the parliament.
It's funny too that everything is just pointed out to the whole Nkandla situation. Although it is a big controversy, surely this country has much bigger issues to deal with than just pointing to the Nkandla situation, there is an economic crisis in this country, unemployment , just to mention a few and the state of corruption has gone overboard for the last (who knows) how many years. It is honestly a joke but if I see other countries and their Parliamentary sessions such as the Middle -East or even some European countries, it sometimes also looks like a circus and I'm sure they are frustrated as well with their leaders. Where South Africa is heading though, I honestly do not know in the least...

What is happening in the parliament nowadays its a disaster and I dont understand why Zuma is still a president Thabo Mbeki was removed just like that but now ANC is protecting the wrong person all the way, Baleka Mbete she was more worried about EFF members than looking at the biggest problem in South Africa. Shame on ANC

Our Parliament is a joke it is so sad that you have people sitting in the high chair like the speaker who cant even speak properly. But they want to rule the country and then not even to speak about Zuma he is the most corrupted man and he is leading our country it is so sad. This country is the next Zimbabwe. BUT still the people vote ANC. We need more people like Maimane who can stand up against a corrupted president "Maimane said he was using the term honourable out of respect for Zuma, but Please don't take it literally because you are not an honourable man. Just love him.

I am very disappointed with how matters are being dealt with in our country, I did watch a bit of the SONA and it is heart breaking to see how disruptive parliament was. It was what everyone has been saying... "A circus".

The EFF have a good point, in that Zuma must pay the money back, and I am sure that most South African's will agree with his argument, BUT... the manner in which they behave in parliament is unacceptable. If we could just be civil and behave in a professional manner, our country would be less of a joke to the world.

We are in serious trouble here and I really am fearful for the future of South Africa, and I feel very sorry for the younger generation.

I can't believe that he is still president as there were so many cases open against him and he is still president but if anyone else does what he did then you go to prison immediately, just saying that i am surprised he is still our president

I think that they need to remove Zuma from the roll of leadership he clearly doesn't no what he is doing, my hat goes off the Mmuso Maimane for the way he addressed all the issues with Zuma. Clear we need a man like that running our country...

I was exceptionally impressed with Mmusi Miamane's response to the entire situation surrounding the SONA. It is well worth a listen. And sums up everything that is said here quite eloquently.

Like everybody is saying now it is a joke, as with all things these days. But yes people see this constantly so why the hell do they still vote for him, oh yes they get free shirts and caps

- That is the crux of the situation is it not. We need a leader in this country and Jacob Zuma is not the man for the job.

As per the link you sent us the other day, he needs to step down - he is doing so much harm to this country and considering where this country has come from, you would expect better and we all deserve better
