I was quite amazed to see the huge impact of the game and hunting industry in South Africa. Hunting is not something that appeals to me, but it is apparently contributing over R10 billion a year to the economy and employment for over 100,000 people. The price of animals at auction is quite unbelievable and at the recent game auction of Piet du Toit, a friend advised me of some of the prices – for example a 25% share in a Sable called Tsunami went for R15,5 million meaning that his total value is effectively now R62 million! I was stunned by these types of figures because I can only imagine the risks from predators, illness, disease, lightning strikes, etc simply destroying a major asset of one. Black Impala go for more than R1 million each, a red Oryx bull went for R9,5 million and King Wildebeest saw some fetching R13 million for a bull. It just shows you that there are sometimes huge parts of the economy that one simply does not know anything about and which have very little coverage in the media and that Piet du Toit, who sold his animals for R200 million at the one auction alone must be a very successful man!

The money in this business is huge and its mostly foreigners that are interested in hunting these animals and that are willing to pay large lump sums for one animal, for them its all in the chase and the excitement. I very much dislike the killing of any animals and feel its a very harsh way of making money...

They say that investing in game and cattle is the best investment you will ever make - far safer than property. These animals are not generally for purposes of hunting but rather breeding. People do not spend millions on an animal just to shoot it. I am so fascinated with nature and count myself as very blessed for being one of the few South Africans that got to grow up in this environment.

All my uncles are Personal Hunters and you can just imagine how much they make for the owners of the wild as all their clients come from over seas.

I really dont like the part where the poor animals are being killed. But I sure do not think twice to buy a piece of biltong now and then. What an expensive hobby. Piet du Toit is a lucky man, no more working for him.

Look at the situation in reverse. Can you imagine being hunted down for money? All animals have a right to be here. i am against Hunting it encourages poaching from my point of view. To think people do it for the trophy angers me. Animals don't kill for sport. They kill to live!
