We are looking at quite a big increase in April and that is because not only has the price of fuel gone up overseas, on average for the month, but also because the Rand has gone down. There are two factors that might mitigate against the increase being as high as 80c, excluding the tax increases, and those are that the fuel price is heading down again, even though it has generally been higher most of the month and the Rand has showed some strength in recent days. The under-recovery on the international market works out at about 57c a litre for 95 unleaded petrol and 23c or so on the exchange rate at the time of me writing this. That would lead to an automatic increase of about 80c but of course, and that is where the real shock comes in, there will be an extra 50c for the Road Accident Fund from 1 April 2015 and the general fuel levy will increase by 30,5c, so essentially at the moment, and hold your breath, we are heading for a R1,60 increase on 95 unleaded and about R1,55 on 93 unleaded petrol. That means the pump price of the unleaded 95 petrol which is currently R11,27 is going to jump to around R12,87 depending on the fluctuation of the market in the last few days of the month. That certainly is going to come as a huge shock to everyone, but if we are to be positive, it is at least still below the R14,00 we all got used to paying last year. Petrol goes down by 20 - 30 cents and up by 3 - 4 times the amount what is the point? Food does not come down when transport costs should be cheaper?

Urggh... So depressing. It was inevitable though. There is a change every single month - so annoying

Although its inevitable that the petrol price will increase from time to time it is still depressing. On the plus side-at least the RAF will be getting more money.

We all knew a petrol increase was inevitable but it was great while it lasted.

And there goes my social life, from now on we can walk everywhere. Maybe we should all get the cars from Flinstones.

Surprise Surprise... So much for the trip down too the coast at least down its going to be much cheaper than coming back, we can just hope it will come down again and that all the prices of consumer goods does't increase as well.

Thabitha's comment pretty much sums it up - we work for food and transport. No extras. Government just taking and taking not giving anything back

I knew that this was going to happen, it was inevitable - but one can just try to survive.

Fuel prices are shocking. Most people are already struggling in this economy so the last thing anyone needs is an increase in fuel.

And there goes our low petrol prices that we came to enjoy for all of 3 months. The sad thing is, the is going to have such an impact on food prices. The poorest of the poor, who might not have vehicles will also be affected by the increase in fuel.................does emptying our pockets ever stop!!!

Every single month it either goes up or down. Is something that routine actually of any interest or shock anymore?.....

This is not good news, especially for holiday makers during the Easter period. Was planning to go away myself over the Easter weekend, but have to say, would rather utilize that extra money on something else instead.......

The Rand has been extremely weak over the last couple of weeks an increase in the price of petrol was expected, with that said, it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. Unfortunately petrol is one of those unavoidable expenses and one needs to tighten the belt on other expenses in order to cater for this increase.

i think i am going to bring oldschool back and get a horse wagon.. i wil save alot on petrol, dont need to take it for a service, dont need to buy tyres.. only thing is i will have to leave home at 1 am to get to work at six hahaha, for my real thought now, i can't believe that it is going up again but atleast it is still less than we paid last year

The problem with this is that if the prices of fuel fluctuate, the price of food also goes up, and a few other things in the process as well, but if the price of petrol goes down, the prices still remain the same. Let's hope that the prices of petrol don't increase a lot more
