Racial hatred in the Rainbow Nation

I chose the blog title, because that is exactly how CNN introduced the issue of the xenophobia once again flaring up in South Africa.  It is tragic when we have to see that once again we are on CNN and SKY TV for xenophobic violence.  A 14 year old boy was killed, as we all know, amongst numerous others.  To tie a 14 year old up and then set him on fire is just absolute disgusting savagery.  It is a tragedy that a culture that encourages Ubuntu and where everyone is a brother or a sister is so unwelcoming to immigrants from nearby countries.  A Mail and Guardian editorial remarked that “Some South Africans are irked by the business competition offered by foreigners and the spectacle of Africans who are more successful than they are.  Perhaps because of South Africa’s culture of entitlement, the entrepreneurial spirit and hard work so evident in immigrant communities has become a source of resentment.

CNN interviewed our Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba who mentioned his meetings with the King of the Zulu people who recently made some disgraceful remarks that foreigners are parasitic ticks. What we need is something that we don’t see often and that is that all of the people that are involved in this violence need to be charged, punished severely and those who are involved in the murders can spend 30 or 50 years in jail.  After the London riots, the British police and the justice system reacted so quickly and so harshly that you can rest assured you will not see those types of riots again for as long as people remember the very harsh sentences that were given to those who stole even small items.  We need to see similar harsh action by our police and our judicial system and charges against all of those who want to make idiotic statements, such as President Jacob Zuma’s son, Edward.

First place I don't understand why do we have to have those boarders because their system is useless its not working. I wonder who is behind these attacks and if this doesn't have anything to do with politics and I will love to hear from the attackers what is happening and why SA is a free country everyone is welcome to live in our country.

Once again I feel Government is to blame, if there was not so much corruption and time actually went into job implementing procedures, there would be no need to accuse foreigners of steeling jobs.

That set aside, how barbaric is ones culture that it allows such behavior. Killing while everyone stands around watching.

And because this is SA, there will be NO punishment, NO law changes as this Country is incapable of implementing any form of structure.

This xenophobia really is heartbreaking and disgraceful, especially the brutal way in which foreigners are being attacked. This is also a reflection of the mentality of South Africans and how South Africans' first reaction to an issue is always violence and brutality.

South Africa is known as a country for its horrendous prejudice and violence to people in the past, simply because they belonged to a particular group and we have now progressed so well in overcoming those prejudices and uniting as a country. Its so sad that the people who were the victims of prejudice and violence are now the perpetrators of prejudice and violence. Its like moving 10 steps back in the achievement of becoming a rainbow nation.

I agree that the perpetrators should be charged and severely punished- although the fact that only 1 person was convicted for the xenophobic attacks in 2008 does not also instill much confidence of that happening.

It is sad to see what a country South Africa turned out to be. Violence, and crime are in the order of the day. No wonder CNN has introduced South Africa as a country with racial hatred. I sometimes feel so sad when I read about things like this....

It's appalling and heartless what is happening in this country. It's absolutely beyond me how a human being can deliberately set another alight or stab them repeatedly without a second thought and others are just watching. What happened to humanity? What makes one human being believe that his/her life is more valuable than the next person's?

I'm so upset with whole story I'm just worried about our kids they going to suffer because of this. People need to learn to live together and love one another, we all brothers and sisters and we should be united. We are all living in such dark and ugly ages.

My heart breaks for all the foreigners that have been left homeless, hurt and defenseless. I don't know why you would hurt a child that had no choice in the matter either other then to move where his/her parents want them to move. These attacks will never end unless the government decides to get more strict on foreigners entering the country. My thoughts are that its hard for South African's to enter other countries, yet any foreigner can enter ours which is making it harder for employment purposes.

I'm ashamed to say i live in SA i don't care what color, race or religion you are you don't deserve to be set alight because you are here legally or illegally these people are sick and what is anyone doing about it????NOTHING this is what it came to after 20 years of so called freedom THIS is what they do to their own brothers ,we all are living in fear because who knows what will happen next and our so called police are doing nothing they watched how one man burned four boys the one was only 6 or 7 years old that little boy did not even know he was a foreigner I'm so disgusted not even a animal will do this.

I honestly have no words. It is disgusting what they are doing. It nobodies fault but their own. They should all be punished for what they are doing and severely, but thanks to this country and how everything is run, nothing will come of it!

xenophobia is a shame to SA and it will create a greater exodus of people. eventually there will be only these xenophobic zombies running the streets like in horror movies , hunting down the last remaining person with a warm blood.

Its so sad to see what we have to go through in our country, its very disgusting and heart sore that innocent people are dying and no one is taking anything further

These attacks are disgraceful and absolutely unacceptable, like Daria says, innocent people's lives are being taken and nothing is being done other than a patrolling by our police officers. The logic behind these attacks are absolutely stupid! The logic is that the foreigners are taking "their" jobs however what I see is lazy people who don't necessarily want to do the work, the want it handed to them on a silver platter without any work being done towards it. These foreigners work hard for what they have in our country and it is disgusting that some South Africans feel that they can just attack and murder these innocent people. It is times like these that I am ashamed to be a South African. Not every country is perfect and each country has their problems but innocent killing! Come on!!

I cannot believe that in this day and age people act so barbarically. It is a disgrace to the already problematic country. I saw a photo the other day when a picture was taken of a woman being stabbed by one of our citizens right there in front of the journalist. It brings a big shame to this country and I'm sure the tourism industry will take another big knock with the Xenophobic attacks again because of how the other broadcasting channels portray South Africa.
