Revenge porn now punishable

It is good to see that the UK has reacted quickly on the issue of revenge porn.  A new law has just come into place which says that if you distribute a private sexual image of someone without their consent and with the intention to cause them distress, you can get up to 2 years in jail.  The definition of a sexual image would include anything they say that “a reasonable person would consider to be sexual” and that that would include somebody who is posing in a sexually provocative way.

In other words, the photograph does not have to be of somebody in the nude, but underwear pictures for example posted with the intention of causing someone distress could lead to you spending 2 years in jail.  I think this is good legislation and I think that it needs to be enacted around the world.  It is tragic that so many people, although this is generally something that happens with younger people, can cause so much distress when a relationship goes wrong and their partner – usually a male – starts distributing their pictures around.  In America, an operator of a revenge porn site called u.gotposted.com was recently sentenced to 18 years in jail for hosting the revenge porn photographs.  Media reports bring this home in South Africa – the young lady in a school video, a few years ago, which showed her having sex with two men, has now committed suicide.  Laws like this would have frightened off people from posting and circulating such videos and potentially saved her life had we had them.

Its a good law but just curious to know how do they prove who posted the pics? If your phone was stolen for example and the person who stole it posts the pics or anyone could say there phone was stolen as an excuse.. What would happen..

This is a great law, to prevent people who actually go as far as that. Using private photos to get back at someone might feel like the best thing to do, but its totally unfair and uncalled for. Private photos are supposed to stay private, as they can destroy other professional relationships. If its not respected then the other option to stay out of this drama is not taking such photos at all. They do say be careful who you trust.

So eventually the saying, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" should now be "hell hath no fury like an ex scorned". I have to agree with the law, one stupid picture can ruin ones life. Think twice before you send a pic, because a two year jail sentence will ruin anyone's life, especially when you hear what goes on in the jails.

I to agree with this law, it is good to know that you are safe as the end of relationships can often be brutal

I couldn't agree with this more. So many instances have been reported where people take their lives due to public humiliation. Its quite sad we are capable of ruining another's life over a little revenge.

I actually heard about this on the Fresh Drive where every Wednesday a social media attorney comments on things like this. Hopefully it comes to SA as some men and woman cannot handle rejection and get a little bit more than just bitter to do something like that. Its pathetic and really just shows you what kind of person that guy/girl is to try humiliate or 'blackmail' someone.

You have to be an idiot to send photos of yourself! I agree with David, no happy ending there.

The best way to avoid all of this is to never take or let others take photos of you!
And who is raising these men? Mothers wake up and pay attention to your children, teach them morals and values!
Disgraceful that people claim to love each other and as soon as the relationship ends they try their best to hurt the other person

This was discussed on the radio the other day, they asked people to call in if they had ever put any personal pictures or videos on social media after ending the relationship with the other people. A handful of people phoned in and said that they were victims whether their ex's posted pictures on Facebook and twitter after their relationships had ended. I find this very disrespectful and extremely low of people, if you are exchanging pictures of a certain nature, make sure who you send them to!

I think it's a good thing. Let sex offenders get punished for this unlawful act. It is disgusting and it is in no ones right to post another persons's picture. There should be harsher sentences.

I am so glad some countries are doing something about the "revenge porn" i mean those pictures people take of them selves for the lovers are personal and private just because things go wrong in the Relationship that now they hurt each other and the reputation its not nice. We should implement this in SA. But then again don't take x rated pictures of your self and send them to people its so for the bed room...

SA should defiantly have this law. These days even a bad break up can cause people to be vengeful and use private photographs against you.

it's a very bad idea to allow compromising photos to be taken of yourself.
there's no happy ending...

I agree fully with this law. I hope it comes to SA soon.
