Department of Home Affairs falling apart

I have written positively about my experiences with the Randburg branch of the Department of Home Affairs previously.  Unfortunately, the situation is no longer as it was and I think to a large extent that relates to the problems that have now developed with the requirements in terms of full unabridged birth certificates.  Parents now need these to travel with their children and it has led to a surge of people at all of the various branches.  The queues are ridiculously long and I’ve had staff members standing in queues for up to 5 hours before being “assisted”.  One has very little success with the Director-General, Mkuseli Apleni, who proudly advertises his contact details on posters throughout the branches, but if you call him you will get a different story.  When one of my staff called him he told them that while it was his department, the particular thing she was phoning him about, which was citizenship, was not something that he oversaw – which is a rather peculiar answer if it is his department!

I have written approximately four or five letters to him over a span of a few months and I have yet to receive the courtesy of even a reply from him.  His department is in a shambles, and when the rock starts it normally starts at the top and when you have somebody who does not reply to their correspondence and cannot even delegate somebody to actually reply to it, if he is amazingly busy, one can hardly expect that your staff members are going to keep a proper work ethos.  It brings to mind the tragic story of a young man who committed suicide outside one of the branches some years ago, because they would not give him an identity document, and the reality is that in any Western democracy if such a terrible incident had occurred, heads would have rolled and I would not be surprised if the Director-General would have been fired.  It is a pity in South Africa that similar action is so seldom taken.

There is no order at Home Affairs! You are sent from pillar to post and you will only leave there after 2pm if you arrive at 6am or 7am. It's really just frustrating being there! You seriously need to allocate a whole day if you need to go there.

The state of all "affairs" in South Africa are full or rot. And it is not about being negative, stop being negative about your country blah blah, it is a fact! If you do not face the facts how can the situation improve? It's like all rehabilitation, 1st the problem has to be acknowledged, then solutions proposed, then improvements implemented. Otherwise an uncontrollable downward spiral of rot. Really, really, really sad and frustrating for someone like me who likes things to work, be organized and this is just so out of control, so neglected in your face, absolute disgrace. And he is probably busy, sitting in meetings, eating nice lunches, talking about things that are so superfluous and so detached from the reality of what is happening on the floor but at least his ego has been fed. One more happy ego in the government
YUK!

Service in Government institutions is just pathetic or non-existent at all. was recently in hospital and was sent from post to pillar just to open a file when I could barely walk suffering from malaria.
Home affairs is not any different, you stand on the queues for ever without getting any service at all. It is extremely frustrating knowing that they will tell you to come back the following and still not get service.

On the radio this morning they were saying that some Nurses in Government Hospitals take tea brakes for 3 - 4 hour, while the patients need to sit and wait for their return. This was shocking to hear that people who need treatment are in fact waiting in lines like this without being seen to, where will it stop and how many people will have to stand in these ques every day until this will be attended to? I just think in this world it is every man for himself as no one else actually cares about someone else.

It does not matter where in government you go, you will always struggle to get service, and you will have to stand in ques, so my advise is be there before tea brakes very early in the morning, as this might increase your chance to get all your tasks done.

It's quite funny because they work for Government - essentially they work for US, me and you that pay taxes - we pay their salaries so they need to stop saying "I'm on tea break, we closing, we offline, we can/t help you". We are basically their bosses. Those who do not want to work and have attitudes and lazy must get out of the government jobs with its decent pay, comfy medical aid, generous leave and allow others who are desperately seeking employment to have their jobs. I only really wish for a new government who have people in their organisation to put people in power and manage as well as effectively run these departments. If companies can do this - why can't they? Because if no-one owns a project it won't get done! Mr Department of Home Affairs is always unavailable aka on a vacation so why should the staff work?? Ok enough of my ranting of the day!

Any government department is a nightmare to deal with. Why can we not start opening up competition. Surely if small business start up, eventually they will grow. We are starting to fall beyond 3rd world, let us do something while we still can because if we dont, we are fools to think it is going to get better.

I really do not like to go there, i have only been there once and we were there for about 4 Hours, i really do not have any patience, if i have to sit somewhere for 5 minutes i will get moody and walk out, services these days are very slow and you only have a certain amount of time to get stuff done for example ID's, they should really clean up their act, and it is not just home affairs that has terrible services, one day i went to Jet to open an account then they were like Urgh and pulling their faces and say their phones are not working so they cannot phone the people that do everything, then i went to Edgars and they helped me in 15 minutes without waiting

I really have no patience when it comes to Home affairs or any government department actually. They also have attitudes that you owe them the respect, no more customer service at all in the government departments.

The worst is when you have been standing there the whole day and they say to you its closing time we wont be able to help you please come back tomorrow then i just want to smack someone with a chair in the face lol(not really) and then its still actually 20 to 25 minutes before they close ... They are just ridiculous and a joke

I don't even want to get started on Dept of Home Affairs. When I got married in 2001 I submitted my documents several times to have my new ID done in my married name, just to be told numerous times when I enquired about the status of my new ID that they have "misplaced" the documents, and that I had to resubmit it again. Needless to say, I stopped submitting it. Now, I am still on my maiden name on my ID, and have to present my marriage certificate each time I have to present my ID. Not a good experience for me!

There`s not really something good to say about this place. In my hometown they are not even open on weekends. And when you are there once in a blue moon you stand there forever. They will close the doors right in your face , after standing the whole day in the ques.

Best times to go is in January when all is still quiet, well that was the last time i went and was there for not even 30 min. It was great compared to what I was expecting. This was a few years ago though!

Once again Governmental Department - SAY NO MORE. Citizenship is supposed to take a year (12 Months) but in a particular instance after 6 months of calls and follow ups, I was then only told oh sorry the application is missing and was never received by a certain department, if you don't make these calls which are also almost never answered, where a person would wait a year and then start calling to find out, then to be told there is a huge mistake and another year of waiting is on the agenda.

There are also different departments and once the application is sent for instance to Immigration Department, another 4 - 6 weeks till immigration clearance is approved.

Home Affairs is just a joke.

I can not even explain all my frustration dealing with Home Affaires, all 10 years dealing with any branch gave me trouble. So incompetent and lazy people working there, I would say if I did not have kind of connections with someone there thru friends or family probably all my documents will not be done and it took years to sort the paperwork out. I have applied for unabridged Certificate 3 years ago for my child, still did not receive - when I start to follow up with them - they confident responded to me that my certificate probably lost, so I need to pay and reapply again.

Luckily I do not have to deal with the service you guys get. I have a contact at Home Affairs and never have to stand in any queue. Also, whatever I need done, gets done in a shorter period of time......and no......I will not reveal my contact.

The home affairs office in Randburg used to be amazing! Very disappointing to hear that it is no longer. Service delivery in our country really does need to improve and especially in the government sector!

I agree. It's a disaster as to how people have to wait so incredibly long, and even worse, some of the staff's attitude is also funky sometimes. Unnaceptable
