Golf Digest sparks controversy again

The American edition of Golf Digest is a little bit more racy and different to the South African version.  It for example always features adverts for blood thinners as well as for erectile disorders and medication like Cialis as well as Viagra – adverts which you don’t find in the South African version.  The magazine’s cover recently featured a professional golfer, Lexi Thompson, topless with a towel over her and a very lengthy letter from the editor trying to explain the cover – as if he knew beforehand that there was going to be a bit of trouble.  They went out of their way for example to say that the room was cleared while the “delicate moments” were photographed.  They even mentioned that they checked with her mother that she liked the shoot.  What is your opinion as to whether or not a photograph of a topless lady golfer has a place in a golf magazine and is it appropriate or not?  Or, considering the photo is it much ado about nothing? I must just mention, before anyone raises the issue of males, the month before edition had what I thought was a ridiculous picture of Rory McIlroy also topless – although bronzed.

Well i think this is an excellent way of advertising I think definitely the sales went through the roof I don't see anything wrong with this cover. Frankly I wont make time to watch golf and usually golf magazine covers are so boring.Anyway she has the body and she can play golf is that not any man who loves golf dream..And who cares if her cover has nothing to do with golf if my body was that fit you can put me on any cover you want....just saying

This is obviously an attempt by the magazine to attract more attention and ultimately sell more copies. I do not think that it is distasteful. If she had agreed to the shoot then its a simple case of if not, why not. I might now buy a copy myself ;)

I thought majority of its readers would be men and why would they complain? Sex sells and I'm sure the sales went through the roof? Perhaps the racy things such as rectile disorders and medication was only the beginning and to slowly make way for what was to later follow. The picture is really not distasteful and if she was fine with doing it - who are we to judge her exposure tactics? To be honest I never heard of her before this. So was I living under a rock or has the publicity worked?

I have seen a couple of sport magazines with half naked men on them, and it didn't attract nearly as much attention as this one did. (Maybe the women went wild buying them, I don't know). The only "sports magazine" in our house is Tight Lines - for any of you knowing fishing, you would know what I'm talking about. Guess how it would look like if they pictured half naked men and woman catching fish on the front cover page! That would be hilarious!

I do not understand the relationship between her being topless and golf unless it is a marketing strategy. This is totally inappropriate for a professional golfer to engage in.

My opinion will be that you have to keep your main target market happy. So it is not really a bad thing, there are many other magazines that reveal more than this cover.

I have no problem with the photo at all. Its there to get attention for the magazine.

The cover does not bother me at all as its just a marketing tool used to attract more attention to the magazine.

This picture has nothing to do with golf. Maybe if she was holding a gold stick at least or something, it's just pointless.
