I was quite amused to hear the radio adverts, paid for by the government, about the new e-toll rates. It is all about how government has listened to the people and has now slashed the rates people must pay. I don’t think they listened properly to what people were saying, because nobody asked to pay less but they asked for no e-tolls at all.
The advert is pure propaganda but like most propaganda it may work together with the corny ending about how everyone has now made South Africa a better place. At the end of the day, all they need to do is to break the back of the majority, get the majority to pay and then prosecute the minority and they will have their system back in place. After that, they can slowly increase the tariffs each year back to where they were. It will be interesting to see if it works and judging by the lack of screaming and shouting, I suspect that it may well work now. Of course, the real devilishness is their no renewing of your licence without paying your e-tolls up to date – and I think that is going to force compliance more than anything else, because otherwise, although you will not get pulled over for your unpaid e-tolls on a regular basis, you are going to get fined all the time for your licence – something that traffic police always check for.

Always a money making storey with this government. They will always try find a way to make money. They should of used the money they spent on the e-tolls to fix existing roads and not just patch the whole time.

Did not ask for it so I wont pay for it...And if everyone decide not to pay well then no one will get to renew their license disks, creating a new problem...so well done to our wonderful government with this bright idea

I haven't received a bill yet (touch wood) and I will NOT pay for E-tolls. We pay so much to the government already! It really is a joke especially with our president...

I agree with David, we did not ask for Etolls, we didn't know they were being built blah blah so why should we pay for them. I will just register my car in KZN and go once a year to renew my licence there

Well said both David and Angelique. I will pay my e-tolls when Zuma pays back Nkandla (he he he he he - for those who watched his speech you will know what that means) What a farce.

I completely agree with David however, if our licence disks can't be renewed it might just change my mind. It's a joke - Zuma won't pay back the money and then still gets a salary increase! We literally work for our government and not the other way around.

I didn't chose this, so I won't pay for it. Government takes enough taxes from hard-working people. Nkandla won't be paid off so why should we then take the government seriously?
