Choice of a wedding song

Many years ago I attended a wedding of somebody who had always been very special to me.  I have to say that I have never forgotten her wedding, because of the song that she and her husband chose for their first dance.  I don’t generally think most pop stars are modern day poets, writing wonderful and meaningful lyrics, because most of what they write is nonsense, but one still has to have some regard to the words of a song before choosing it as your wedding song.  They chose what they obviously thought was a romantic song, and perhaps a very sexy and brave song to put on in front of parents and grand-parents, by Heart called “All I want to do is make love to you”.  The problem with the song though is it is very clearly about a lady who has a night in a hotel with a stranger that she picks up on the side of the road on a rainy night, falls pregnant by him and has a child.  The catch to it is that she is already involved with another man and says that in making her pregnant, he gave her the one thing that the other man could not, so presumably the man she loves is infertile.

I have to say I could not stop cringing while the song was played and the couple romantically danced around on the dance floor and I have always assumed and hoped that most people did not listen to the words and have no idea what the song was about.  I am not going to go into the other troubling aspects of the song – picking up strangers in the rain and taking them to a motel “I knew well”.  One struggles to imagine why she would know the motel well, unless this was repeated behaviour!  I have repeated one of the pertinent verses below.

Then it happened one day,
we came round the same way
You can imagine his surprise
I said “please, please understand
I’m in love with another man
And what he couldn’t give me
was the one little thing that you can”

I think a wedding song is suppose to mean something for the two people that got married. Not to impress their guests. Because only the bride and groom will know the true meaning behind the song they chose for their wedding.

Lol, That is a beautiful song but definitely not for a wedding, The most beautiful song I have heard at a wedding is from David Grey "This years love"

Went to a friend's wedding. Upon her and her groom entering the hall her brother was supposed to play the song of Bryan Adams where he sings "everything I do, I do it for you..." but accidentally he selected the incorrect Bryan Adams song and they entered on the song "please forgive me I know not what I do..". Oops was extremely awkward

That is terrible lol! Knowing my family they would mention it in a speech or something like that. I better get married before Sinead though because Ed Sheeran - Thinking outloud is MY wedding song!! :)

Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow... That's terrible! Maybe they didn't think it all the way through... I agree though, modern day writers are writing a whole bunch of crap these days. Except for the odd few.
My boyfriend once said to me that our wedding song must be Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud. Well we'll see... I'm in no rush to get married :)

Haha! How awkward, your wedding son is extremely important and damn check the lyrics before you decide to go with a song! It's not just the beat of the song that matters!

Could just be one of those songs that they both enjoy. Is a very odd song to have as your wedding song, but hey, everybody to their own.

That is a very nice song i like the song but its not a wedding song at all, but hey i have to agree with Sandra" Different Stokes for different folks". In the end i also have to say that a Wedding is not about music or the dress its about the commitment you make.

The song has to have meaning to both of them, other wise they would have not picked that song. I agree the lyrics seems off for a wedding song.

That is so awkward! I am always amazed with people when they say they like a song but have no idea what the lyrics are about or mean. There is so much emotion behind the lyrics to a song, how can you possibly like a song without even understanding it?
I remember a guy telling me that the song "LA Woman" by the Doors reminded him of me. Funny if you listen to the lyrics. Clearly he liked the song and not the words!
I am now going to be preoccupied by thinking of songs with the most awkward lyrics that you have your first dance to at your wedding.

Maybe they both just really liked the song so they made it their song?
