Processed meat leads to colon cancer

A report by the World Health Organisation has said that eating processed meat can raise the risk for humans to get colon cancer.  There is also evidence that eating red meat again can be bad for you, but the evidence seems to be more clear-cut when it comes to actual processed meat.  By processed meat they mean meat like hot dogs, corn beef, the various slices of meat that you can get at a delicatessen including ham, etc.  The more processed meat you have, said an expert at the Agency, the greater your risk of developing colon cancer as you get older.  The risk is so high that they have put processed meat in the Group 1 category which is a category reserved for items where they say there is sufficient evidence to show that they cause cancer and other members of Group 1 would include smoking tobacco and exposure to asbestos!  They say that smoking tobacco and asbestos are more dangerous – which is somewhat of a relief, but the very fact that it is in the same group means that processed meat is best avoided.

On the other hand, it is amazing that so many people have made such good money out of selling processed meat to us, because although it is not true of all processed meats, such as bacon, many processed meats are in fact the undesirable parts of an animal, which nobody would buy in a butchery, and putting them together and then making one pay more for it!  The WHO defines processed meat as anything which is transformed to improve its flavour or preserve it and that would include, for example, biltong if in any way flavourings are added.

One day meat is good for you, another it's not. A topic discussed and debated since I can remember. I'm no expert but I can imagine that anything that has been processed cannot be extremely healthy. Luckily I very rarely eat any processed meat

I believe that anything in this life can trigger cancer. Processed food is a cheaper and easier option for people unfortunately.

Processed meats, tobacco, exposure to asbestos... yes all major killers... but what about excessive alcohol consumption. It is amazing how that is never in the top list of things that kill you. Why? because drinking alcohol is "lekker" so why put that into a list of killers? In all honesty, each and every person exposes themselves to something that may ultimately "kill" them, so we cannot just pin point the one's we think are the worst because in these desperate times, even eating a peace of chicken or eating an apple etc. can make you violently ill because our fruits and vegetables and our meats are now pumped with steriods. We are living in a world where everything is dangerous, and we will never be able to avoid consuming anything that will ultimately lead to a serious illness, because we will never know was was used to produce it. That is reality!

I don't think the public is educated enough about what is good and what is bad for you when it comes to preservatives and what ever else goes into processed foods.

Everything that is unhealthy tastes so good, and the food with that are healthy for you (some of it) tastes terrible, how does that work? anything can trigger cancer, so why give up all things and do just healthy things and still get it?

Without trying to sound silly it's almost as though almost anything can give you cancer these days. Use your sunblock every day even in winter, drink lots of water, regular exercise and try eat more healthy than unhealthy and don't smoke. These are things one can rather work on doing as we cannot avoid everything in life otherwise are we living??

Majority of meat products on the shop's shelfs are processed today. And it is so difficult to find pure quality and organic foods in all supermarkets, in most of the cases these food will be more cheaper and affordable then any organic food. I am absolutely agree that we all should watch what we are consuming. This is very good article to keep in mind.

I like my biltong so every now and again, as well as sometimes corn beef with scramble eggs for breakfast - in all honesty - our forefathers used to make their own processed food and lived to see a good age. These days, too many people die of some sort of cancer caused by something - in my opinion, I think it's caused by all these "being too healthy" foods. I think that these "health conscious people" sometimes take things a bit too far.

We have all travelled down that Rabbit Hole havent we? *rabbit hole of internet-self-diagnosis* and somehow, it always ends up being cancer.

At the end of the day, we are all mere mortals and will die. In one way or another. Be it cancer, old age, an accident or murder there are a million ways to die.

I try to avoid it if possible. It just does not have the same effect, even processed cheese, you can taste the difference. I try to go as organic as possible. Regardless, i do not eat as much meat in any event, if i can, i go vegetarian.

I don't eat any processed meats at all, there is just something about it being processed that grosses me out! There are however risks in eating a lot of food and there is always something that causes cancer and increases your risk of getting cancer. I think organic is the way to go!
