Open plan offices

I read a very interesting article recently about open plan offices.  The theme of the article was more to do with end of year staff parties, but it detailed how around the world these parties are not what they once were and many companies are doing away with them. The article explained that the end of the year party started at a time when most people worked in big firms, in their own office, and there was very little interaction and that was the purpose of the end of year party or the monthly get together at a bar in the firm.

It was to encourage interaction, people to see who they are working with and get to know each other.  The article said that around the world there is a trend towards open plan offices where a lot of people now work in the same office and generally know each other much better than they did when they worked in small closeted spaces.  They see each other every day, they greet each other, they meet at lunch, they share lift clubs on the way home, etc and there is not the same interest anymore in end of year parties as there used to be.  I wonder what your thoughts on that are – I only know the complications of arranging them. Whatever date you arrange, whether it is one or two years in advance, there are people who cannot go.  If you arrange a club there are certain people who will not go to a club or a bar, if you don’t arrange a club or a bar and you arrange a picnic at a restaurant, there are those who will find that too boring and will not go to that.  There are those who want to take their partners, there are those who want their partners to be paid for and there are those who are possibly too embarrassed to take their partners and don’t want their partners to attend.  That was an easier one to settle because research quickly indicated that most firms do not allow partners and where they do, they pay their own way.  I find when you ask somebody to pay their own way or even contribute towards the function that is the best way to get them to lose interest in it!  I suppose it is inevitable in a country where we have 13 official languages that there is so much diversity and so many different people that it would be very hard to genuinely find one activity that everybody can be moderately happy with to do.  I think quite frankly, even if the company pays for it, if you were to for example arrange it for a Saturday and the staff members are now going to the party out of their own free time, you will find that only a few would turn up – probably your best staff actually.  That would probably be the best way of testing whether there is actually an interest, because if you are not interested enough to turn up in your own free time for a function to get to know fellow staff “better”, then one can hardly say it is something that is important to one.  If I think back, probably the most successful staff function I ever had, apart from some staff leaving early and taking some of the food and drinks with them, was a function that we had at the horseracing and when I was begged by everybody to repeat it, I did.  Of course, a number of those invited, including those who said it was such a good idea and would love to come, immediately came back with the “I really did want to come but unfortunately I cannot this time, but next time for sure.”

The open plan office is good and looks neat but some people like to work in a quite environment and with an open plan office it could get very chatty

I like the open plan office thing. To be honest I don't even know of companies that don't have such things. With regards to the parties, have a party don't doesn't really matter to me. I do like most of the ladies that I work with now so would go but also wouldn't bother me if there was never a Christmas party. I am here really just to work not entertain people.

There is nothing that bid unity, respect and good attitude, you can set in your office or open plan office as long as you give each other bad attitude then there is no difference. Parties is for relaxing taking time off work

I think there is a positive and negative side to open plan offices. If your job is not too pressurized then you wouldn't mind sharing but if you have a pressurized job it's quite distracting, there are times that I need my space.

There is no way to please everyone, let people make their own plans if that is what they wish to do.

Even if there is no end of year function, people could always get together after work to spend time with the people they enjoy - saves a lot of trouble!

I think open plan offices is way better the gossip will be less and in that way you can also learn to know each other without a party.

I used to love open space offices as long as my co workers are not moody and difficult.Get togethers are important in any case .Parties are fun! I can't stand get togethers when moms come with kids because nowadays mothers are too focused on their kids and forget that they live a life themselves.

Open plan offices are a good thing you see people you work with everyday you interact with them you get to know them if you work with them every single day seeing them happy seeing them sad or angry you get to know people on another level when you sit across someone or next to someone for weeks at a time

I do feel that the purpose of a staff party is not necessarily for the staff t get together and get to know each other, but perhaps just a form of appreciation for the hard work during the year. I don't necessarily enjoy staff functions as not everyone enjoys everyone's company and I am generally very selective of who I spend time with in any event but I do find that after these sort of get together's people do seem to feel more of a team and appreciated.
I unfortunately am not really a fan of open plan offices, not everyone has the same background and there generally are conflicts between the staff members if they are always in your space. Concentration is always an issue in open plan offices.
I think they are separate issues and I don't think being in an open plan office means you shouldn't have an end of year function, I think it comes down to feeling appreciated.

I have worked in both my own office and now an open plan office and, personally, I prefer an open plan office. As long as there are not too many people sitting in the office because then it does become distracting - I think open plan is the way to go.

Open planned offices is a great idea although it could slow down productivity if you get people that just want to talk all the time

I love open plan offices as the day goes by faster but on the other side is that we need our own space and time to concentrate on something really important and noise in the office can sometimes make that difficult. I love the fact in an open plan office we can learn from each other and ask a quick question when you need help.

I have worked in open plan offices in most of my career. One tends to "shut off from the world" when you have loads to do and don't want to be disturbed. Being in an office now, makes it much easier for me. I do like open plan offices, as you have your colleagues around you and can have a quick chat in the morning before work starts. I also like company social events because you get to know people you don't normally get the chance to speak to otherwise.

The reality is that one will never ever please everyone involved when it comes to venue, place, time or date. There needs to be compromise if a staff function is going to be held and certainly if one cannot compromise, then the function in most cases will just be done away with. I find that the interaction that I have with my work colleagues on a daily basis is enough and during lunch we always have a time to share our personal lives with one another. In a very nice way I would like to say that I see enough of my colleagues during the week :)

I don't think open plan office is ever a good idea, I can just picture constant chatting and lots of noise. I think a compulsory lunch with all the staff members is a great idea for an end year function.

I personally prefer my own space, but because we work with people on a daily basis, an open office plan is not a bad idea. You get to learn a lot of new skills just by sitting next to someone

Open plan offices is a great idea only if people concentrate on doing the work and not make it a socialising ground. This is where the end year party comes in for getting to know your colleagues better.

I thought that end of the year work functions were more based on employers showing their staff their appreciation for their hard work during the year. Open Plan offices have their ups and downs. The downers of it is that some colleagues can get into each others face too much which causes drama. The Uppers are that you get to know your colleagues, be comfortable with them and make friends which then makes a good hard working team. You also get to learn what each others strong points are.

the benefit of open plan offices is that you get to know your co-workers better but personally for me i like having my own space.

I'm not very keen on the idea of open plan offices-my theory is that one comes to work to do work and not socialise and if you make a few good friends in the process then that's a bonus.
With my theory in mind, i think that interacting with colleagues outside an office setting is a good way of creating the socialising and interacting amongst colleagues and you also get to know people better in a more relaxed environment.

Is it just me or are the days getting shorter and shorter? I can hardly get my groceries done and always feel I am not spending enough time with my son so I am obviously not pro sacrificing time on the weekends unless my child is involved. Lunch at Papachinos? And then no one would chat anyway, too busy with the kids. I think if you want to socialise with some staff you will make a plan to in any event. The one event I did enjoy and thought was long enough, pleasant enough and everyone participated was when we finished work an hour early and braaied boerewors by the gazebo. Only part that was not too nice was when half the boerewors wasn't cooked and staff had to take theirs home raw, but that was quite funny. So for me I like simple, short, convenient. Not about being uncommitted or disinterested, just about time and priorities.

Open plan offices are great for interaction - but some may have a work ethic that requires a different type of environment. Some may come in early or stay late for example. Perhaps rethink staff parties and implement team building - fun outdoor activities that require us to communicate and work together in a different type of setting. I think this would be a much healthier and better way of social interaction :)
