Wombles moving to Bryanston

I was quite surprised to hear from the owner of Wombles recently that they are moving to Bryanston.  They have been based in Parktown North for so many years that they are an institution in the area. Those who have been at lunch only would never understand exactly how popular Wombles is in the evening and they apparently turn away 30 to 50 bookings a night.  I am not sure that going to Bryanston is a good move for them but I have to say that it is by far my preferred steakhouse and I really had some superb meals at Wombles.  The management is also always excellent – from the second I walk through the door I am greeted by my name and they will come over and discuss, as they did on the most recent occasion, what the developments are with the RABS Bill.  That sort of awareness of your customers, what they do, etc together with good service and good food will always lead to keeping customers.  Client retention and word of mouth are far more effective, and cheaper, than advertising alone.

I have never been to Wombles but I have heard its absolutely spectacular! I think a restaurant needs to be very careful when deciding to moving locations, sometimes the area and vibe makes the restaurant what it is.

I heard that its a wonderful restaurant, however many people are saying that their current venue is perfect and that not sure if they will have the same sort of "vibe" at the new location.

Wombles - never heard about this place, but will defiantly go there one day, even if this place is in Bryanston.
This is so true that the best marketing of any restaurant business (any business) is the word of mouth!

Any place that is worth their wait, as Wombles is, will definitely have their clients follow them. People in Gauteng are not phased by travelling to enjoy themselves, so I am sure they will be just as successful in Bryanston.

It was quiet an experience having lunch at Wombles. The service was phenomenal. Instead of moving why couldn't they just open a branch in Bryanston instead? I'm sure the owner must have done his research before making the decision to move. As indicated previously in another blog, location is key for any business to succeed.

I have never been to Wombles but I am still dying to go.

Wombles is awesome and i'm sure that they would lose a lot of regulars if they were to move to Bryanston especially because they have been there for so many years

I love Wombles. I don't think its a good idea to move to Bryanston as it's not the same vibe. There is something about Parkhurst/Parktown area that other areas don't have and that's the vibe. Although I have to say when Cafe Del Sol opened up in Bryanston it has done incredibly well and you have to book three weeks in advance at the moment. I wonder how Wombles will do in Bryanston. Perhaps I shouldn't complain as its closer to my house and the food is amazing. Not sure about this one..
