Feedback on the July

The only thing that was predictable about the July, as I wrote, was that as usual it was unpredictable.  For me it is sad that the biggest day in horseracing, for the South African public anyway, is a day at a track where good horses seldom win and where it invariably turns into a lottery.  It means that the average South African has a perception of horseracing as being little more than a lottery when it is so much more for the other 364 days of the year!  The fact of the matter is that we go, for example to Turffontein on Champions Day, the champions will normally win, a lot more favourites will win, and where they don’t win you may well have suspected that it was a race that was due to be won by the second or third favourite.  It will not be one outsider after another outsider winning every race.

Master Sabina ran a good race.  The race however for him was over from a few steps after the race began.  In other words, for 2 minutes of the race, I knew that he could not win and that is because, from a good draw, he ended up third last in a slow run race with a win from behind.  That means when they got to the final straight and started their sprint home, he was approximately 13 lengths back and had zero chance of catching everybody.  He came from 16th to 9th in that time and caught up approximately 10 lengths, meaning if he had been mid-field he would not have finished further back than third, but most probably would have been second.  He was the third fastest finisher, out of a field of 18 horses, over the final 400m.

It all went wrong shortly after the start when the jockey, Gavin Lerena, said that a gap opened up in front of him and for half a second he hesitated as to whether to take the gap or not and by the time he decided to take the gap it was gone.  He said that it was his fault and I appreciate that, because with a course of 18 jockeys in the race not everyone will get the tactics and the strategy right.

The bottom line is Master Sabina’s race was doomed from the start and with racing you target the next race which will probably be the eLan Gold Cup which is towards the end of July and it is a very long staying distance race and after that we will certainly go for the Summer Cup again in November.  If he takes his place in the field it will be the fourth consecutive year that he has been in the field, although the one year he did not run because he was injured just before the race when he was the second favourite.

I think Master Sabina is amazing runner and with her training and talent she could of win this race, but I fully agree on how luck turns the day of the race.
Master Sabina did very well and next race will be the winning one!!!

Well done Master Sabina for getting out and giving it your best. It doesnt matter how big or small you are but the size of your heart and spirit that matters!!

I would be interested to see some Gopro footage of what a tight race like this is like from the jockey's perspective. It would be even more interesting if a knowledgeable jockey commentated on it to show the viewer an example of that 1 second gap that either gets taken or not.

As said before it is not always the horse that wins or loose the race. It was sad to see that Master Sabina did came in.

I said it before and I am saying it again, horseracing is a big gamble not only referring to money

This blog made me realise that horse racing is not just about horses running on a track there are actually lots of technicalities to consider and a split second decision can change the outcome.

The unpredictability of Durban July is what makes it exciting. If the winning horses were predictable, it would remove the unexpected element and besides we need to see new faces winning also and not the same old faces making the race boring and nothing to get excited about and to look forward to.

What an awesome race!!
Just shows you once again that you will never know who the winner will be.
All horses have an off day every now and then maybe Master Sabina will do better the next race.
Good Luck to you guys.

Can only imagine how much training and effort went into one race like that. All horses are winners. Better luck next time.

I think that this aspect is what makes the sport so exciting, it hard to predict who will win, and it appears that even the best horses don't always have a fair chance and wining. I suppose you win some and loose some.

That is hard luck for Master Sabina, and one is always left with the thought of "what if". However, it is a gamble and no one can ever predict what will happen on the day. Two thumbs up for Master Sabina though, and hopefully he will come back with a Huge win in the summer cup!

Horseracing is at the end of the day a gamble sport. and allot of factors on that day can make or brake the race

I can only imagine the type of pressure a jockey has to function under when the gates open and that there is a whole lot more science behind winning a race than we will ever understand.

It was bad luck for Master Sabina this time, but I have no doubt that he will go on to win many more races! He proved himself in the Summer Cup and in the final straight of this race as well. Well done Master Sabina, keep going!

I think it is very exciting! Although Master Sabina did not win, having a horse in the race is already a big accomplishment and everyone should be proud. Good luck with the next round!

It is sad to loose in a game but in a game its win or lose big ups to Master Sabina he ran the race and finished it even though he didn't start in a good start and I am sure you are proud.

Mathilda  said:

Unfortunately I did not watch the race, but Im sure Master Sabina gave it his all he is an amazing horse.
Who wins at the Durban July is out of pure luck you cant predict who will win
But good Luck with the Canon Gold Cup

I love watching the horse races. In the main race every one of those horses has a chance to win as they are all the best of the best. Lets hold thumbs for the Summer Cup.

I'm sorry to hear this but I have a saying for sports "It all depends on the day". You never know who will have a good or bad day as a team. All you can do is carry on being a supporter and have belief that one day they will win. Anything is possible.

Zanell  said:

I watched this race, It was so much more exciting because I knew Master Sabina was racing. I think it must be so nerve wrecking for an owner to watch his horse. I do not think I will ever bet on a horse because it is purely luck. I think we also forget that it is the Jockey controlling the horse at the end of the day.

Melissa  said:

Shame it sucks but at least he is still going strong and win others too. This however is your number 1 horse and has made a good name from himself. So you can at least be proud of that fact.

Unfortunately one cannot win them all. This was maybe a good practice round for next year's July. Good luck with the Canon Gold Cup.

The July always seems to be a bit of a gamble though but isn't that something that makes it even more exciting? Anything could happen and any horse could take it regardless of whether or not they are a favourite to win. I have never been a horseracing follower but I am sure you are never too disappointed knowing that it could go anyway.

Tamzyn  said:
on Friday 08-Jul-16 08:38 AM
I cannot comment on the race, as I did not watch, but I do like the picture of the horse! I'm sure lessons were learnt for Gavin, and things will look up next year.

Daniella  said:

Its quite interesting that the Jockey only hesitated for about a second and it was a second too late , it just goes to show that you should always follow your instincts.

Sandra  said:

Every single horse that performed at the Durban July are already winners. They are the top horses and they are all, in my eyes, winners

Master Sabina did run better than what the 'experts' predicated. That being said, the July is always a tough one to call. We cant deny that Pierre road an exceptional race

Sorry to hear it went badly. I did not watch however he who hesitates is lost.
