Making a mistake

I must say I was very disappointed as a golfer to read that Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen will be missing the Rio Olympics.  It is the first Olympics, in a very long time, to include golf as a sport and really golf should not have been missing all these years.

I appreciate that right now they probably think it is not much of an issue, but I do think when they get to the end of their careers they may well regret this.  The Olympics take place every four years, and while it is not as important as the majors, to a worldwide audience it certainly is, and these are two were our best chances at obtaining a medal.  Branden Grace is certainly a fine player at the moment, and will no doubt do well, but I would feel so much happier if one of the other two was at least joining him – Louis Oosthuizen is after all rated high up in the world ratings.  It gives a wonderful opportunity to someone like Jaco van Zyl to take part that I think it is a mistake to snub the Olympics, whatever the reasons are, and I am sad to see that.  There may be other reasons that we don’t know about, but the media certainly creates an impression that it is largely about money – you don’t win money when you take part in the Olympics, and you will have to cover your own expenses and caddies etc but you do get to represent your country and to promote the sport of golf.  Like Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman they also reside, if not full-time, as the others do, on a part of the year basis in their Florida homes, so there would not have been much of a time zone change for them and they may not get the opportunity again in four years’ time, because they may not be the top ranked players in South Africa at that time.

It is quite sad that some of the top players won't be competing in the Olympics. So Sad and I think a lot of fans are disappointed as well

It is very disappointing to see that they are not interested. To win a Olympic gold medal should be a great achievement and that so little are striving for it is very sad. We as South Africa do not have much athletes that are going to the Olympics so one would thought that all would come to together to represent our country. They would definitely have made n difference for our country at the Olympics.

Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world and our best players should be showcased on the biggest stage in sports. But this Zika virus is the reason of them changing their mind and not join strong team of players.

I believe that there's a lot of dissipointed fans but I think that all the players have to protect themselves and their families from the virus. I'm not a big golf fan but I enjoy going to the driving range every now and then.

It would have been nice to see Jordan Spieth play in Rio. I read about the Zika virus in Brazil and how it has caused 4 top players to pull out. Including him...
It's just strange how Golf wasn't included in the Games for so long.

I think Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen should take this chance and represent their country in the Olympics that take place after a vey long time, even if they are not going to get money out of it , just to make their country proud. But I also think that there might be some other reasons that cause them not to participate in the Olympics

Liesl  said:

I believe there are various reasons why top players have been pulling out. From the Zika virus, unrest and safety concerns, crammed schedule that includes two major championships and other huge tournaments, travel and lost family time.

It certainly is disappointing that they have decided not to attend the Rio Olympics and make their country proud due to "hectic schedules". Its the Olympics - they had 4 years to clear the schedules... I don't know why they would not compete unless it is the financial aspect but it really is their once in a lifetime opportunity where they are on top of their game - no one knows what is going to happen tomorrow letalone in 4 years. I think it is a silly and not well thought out decision. Perhaps they are not ready for something so big but I would say like Nike, "Just Do It".

I can imagine that there are number of disappointed fans out there. I don't know if they are not participating due to money problems or because of the Zika virus.. Either way it was definitely an amazing opportunity that they might never have again. They will definitely regret this one day.

There is obviously some merit to their decision, but of course I must agree that it would have been great to see them in the Olympics. My boyfriend was a pro golfer until very recently and he sure has a lot to say about this topic. We spoke about this last night and he thinks that most of the golfers will not attend.

I have never been a huge fan of Golf. Have played a little and it is not an easy game to play. To play is very different than watching. I am positive that these golfers have a reason as to why they do not want to play and ultimately it is their choice. Whether or not it is a risk - if it is due to money, then I would say that that is being very selfish.....do something good in your life and represent

I find what Charl and Louis are doing is very admirable. They are young and may want to continue with families and with the Zika virus around. I would rather regret not going to an Olympic than regretting having a child born with microcephaly.

i can not say anything as i don't know anything about golf, but what i have heard, these people have reason for pulling out, and yes like you said, it might effect their careers at the end, but they did do it for health reasons.

This is disappointing news. They are both very good players.
It would have been great if they could represent our country maybe they will never have this chance again.
I know Branden Grace will do very well he's a very good player. I think golf is one of the most difficult sports that you can get physically and mentally.
It's not just about hitting the ball!!!
I have respect for people who play golf for a career. It takes long hours of practice to get where they are now.
Good luck to every player.

I didn't know golf has been included in the Olympics. It must be a combination of factors coming into play and we do not know all the facts why they opted not to attend to the Olympics. Be that as it may, if one has to chose between contracting Zika virus and representing the country, all of us can decide for ourselves.

Kaylee  said:

I don't really follow the golf. So I am not really sure on who the good players. I do however really enjoy the Olympics especially the gymnastics.

I would like to have seen some SA golfers represent our country in the Olympics. When you're a top golfer or athlete and the Olympics come around it should be an honor to represent your country, and if you don't I feel that it is your country and fans that you let down the most. While the Zika Virus is a concern, I think quite a few found this to be just one reason for not partaking, certainly not the only reason.

Johann  said:

If I were a pro golfer I too would withdraw from this specific Olympics. The Zika virus is a major concern and I would not want to experience, first-hand, how the worst Olympic Games ever plays out.

I dont think that any comment from me will be constructive concerning Golf as I do not really have a great interest in the sport. However, due to special request from a friend, i did play a few rounds of golf in the past and must say it is a very difficult sport to master as it is not about just hitting a ball across the fairway. If you are great at Golf you certainly do have great skill and it is quite disappointing that we do not have more South African representatives at the Olympics, but it is quite understandable that money can be an issue as Golf is a very expensive sport.

That being said, best of luck to Branden Grace.

Juliet  said:

I think that unless they have already committed to another tournament, which would be unprofessional to cancel, they should participate in the Olympics. Life is not just about making money, what terrible examples for the youth.

I don't understand much of golf, but I must say to play in the Olympics must be a very great honour. I certainly believe that players from all ranks must be given the opportunity to represent the country at the Olympics. Good luck to our fellow South Africans! May the force be with you!

my take is that it is a difficult decision to make. one is faced with three problems . one ,risking contracting the virus, paying out of your own pocket and the pride of representing you own country.

given the above, for me the first two problems wins over representing your own country. Our best Golfers are justified in refusing to participate.

If there is an opportunity I think it shouldn't be missed! Even if you don't win any prize money who knows, all these upcoming golfers may be spotted by some important people and could even walk away with an indorsement deal of some sort. However I have also read a number of stories stating that many sports starts are opting out of the Olympics because of fear of the Zika virus.

Bianca  said:
on Monday 11-Jul-16 08:35 AM
I also believe that it is a mistake to pull out of the Olympics, I believe that the reason is fear of the Zika virus? It just seems unreasonable to give up such an amazing opportunity and honour to partake in the Olympics! I suppose though that all of the athletes that have pulled out have thought long and hard about their decisions but I do believe that there will be a lot of regret.

Sarah  said:

Tamzyn  said:

I agree, I think they should of grabbed at the opportunity- regardless of the fact that there will be no prize money. But there may be other valid reasons that we are not aware of.

Jessica Apfel  said:

Are they not playing due to fear of the Zika virus? There has been murmurs that many of the golfers have withdrawn for this very reason! Or is it a sheer lack of patriotism?

Mathilda  said:

Since my Bf is into golf I am forced to watch it and I actually learned to "enjoy" it and its really disappointing to hear that Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen will not be attending the Rio Olympics.
And if its true that they are not going because of money I think that is a bit selfish, I mean you get to represent your country and get worldwide publicity. And in Golf to stay at the top is hard and every year there will be new competition and new favourites so ill definitely have takin this opportunity if it was presented to me .
