SABC policy on violent protests

It is amazing that the SABC will continue with its policy on not giving any coverage to violent protests.  This has now already been held to be invalid by ICASA who said that no absolute ban can be placed on a subject, and that “South Africa is not, as in the apartheid era, a dictatorship.”  They should try telling that to Hlaudi Motsoeneng, who has ignored much more than just ICASA so far!  There seems to be an approach at the SABC to simply ignore anybody’s findings and do whatever you want, or at least until after the elections.  The fact of the matter is the SABC has become a mouthpiece for the ANC and ahead of elections there are certain things that they just don’t want to be covered.

Journalists have been suspended, his permanent appointment as Chief Operating Officer of the SABC has already been set aside and of course he has already been featured in the report of the Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, where they found that he fabricated his Matric qualification and also simply increased his salary without following any valid procedures, from R1,5 million to R2,4 million in one year.  I think this is a very good example of what we are going to see in the years ahead, as the ANC tries, through the various entities it controls, to reduce the coverage and support of minority parties like the EFF and the DA as they grow in popularity.  Controlling your public broadcasters, Vladimir Putin has shown in Russia, is crucial for controlling votes and Putin has effectively ensured, no matter what he does, that he will never lose popularity because essentially all independent media in Russia has either been closed down or terribly intimidated.  We are lucky that the same situation does not exist in South Africa, but for the vast majority of our population the only news that they see is what is shown on the SABC and that is why there is such a fight to control the news that they see.

"What is this censorship thing? It is English, so I don't know it. There is no censorship here." Hlaudi Motsoeneng - SABC. Lmao, this guy!

To be honest, i do not think any political party will make much of a difference in any event, no matter what is covered on television. So many promises are being made all the parties but yet no change has really taken effect really.

A lot of people are just missing the bigger picture and all that are on their minds is the "past"... how it once was, previously disadvantaged, etc. etc. But no one is really looking at the future? If most South Aricans were future minded i think a lot would be different.... But unfortunately, revenge is a major issue in our country and the war will not stop!

Sad to hear what's all taking place in our country, Although it doesn't surprise me at all as long as the ANC is running, Nothing will ever change.

Extremely sad, but not surprising at all! This is the ANC's way of trying to keep away the realities of this country to the majority of it's people.

I Believe we as the public have the right to know what is going on in our country. It is unfair that the government wants to censor the "bad news".

It's because of people like Hlaudi Motsoeneng not abiding by the court's ruling and the findings of ICASA that encourages people to lawlessness and disrespecting court decisions. This is setting a wrong precedent.

I agree that the SABC is the ANC's mouthpiece. I heard on the radio that one of the journalists stated in her affidavit that in one of their meetings they were given instructions to not report negatively on Zuma and should just focus on the positive-this was such a blatant instruction, without any shame or subtlety. This really is reflective of dictatorship.

I do however, take my hat off who stood up for what they believed in and opposed the censorship.

Why oh why, I ask with tears in my eyes am I spending my hard earned salary on school fees and on expensive textbooks when you can be a COO and earn R200 000 a month? Or a president without even a matric? I feel pity on us all - we work for the government, they get our taxes and give themselves big homes, expensive cars, private jets, increases and here we still sitting in a poverty stricken country. Our government runs our SABC and majority have no say in what they can or can't watch. Carte Blanch says its best "You have the Right to see it All". (well... clearly not!)

I don't understand why the ANC tries to ban certain events from being aired on SABC. Have they forgotten that we are living in a modern society where TV is not the only form of a broadcasting platform - what about Facebook - you see and hear of things on Facebook long before it reaches the news desk of the SABC. Let us see if they can prevent anybody from posting on Facebook!

My word Hlaudi Motsoeneng is becoming Zuma now and SABC is becoming ANC, I just wonder sometimes if corruption will ever come to an end

If I read the news its on Sky or BBC, their coverage has not censorship and most of the time their detail is far more than our local news channels. I believe that nothing should be decided for the public, especially the viewing and being made aware of demonstrations against poor service delivery. I do not condone the vandalism of public property but don't try and tell us what we will and wont watch.

Sounds like we are going backwards to the Apartheid Era when everything was censored. We call this a democracy, what a joke. Let's just feed everyone Propaganda and let them remain ignorant to the truth. I'm proud of the fact that we have journalists that actually take a stance and stand up for what's right! I wonder what else is being censored? Maybe our president having lunch dates with the Guptas. Sigh...corruption feeds this country, but yet again we still vote for the ANC. People should think about their votes with upcoming elections. Just saying

Unbelievable but not surprising at all. Everything this government touches is mismanaged and self servient. They feel nothing for the people they claim to fight for as opposed to their own "entitlement" and smouldering arrogance. They have been getting away with a lot but things are starting to turn against them step by step, precept upon precept. We simply must not give up

Zanell  said:

The outcome from the labour court will be interesting. These journalists were fighting for the public interests and were unfairly dismissed. People deserve to know what's going on in their country.

The people need to see what is going on in South Africa maybe then their eyes will open. All of the people are just being brainwashed they are promised wonderful things and in the end they get nothing. Then they want to know why? Meanwhile people are getting unnecessary increases while they could have helped the people that really need it.
Why not focus on the things that are really important?
South Africa is becoming a big joke.

This is the reason why we will never come out on top.

The government has an obligation to inform us about what is happening around the country. This is just another measure to try and cover up all the corruption and violence. This is just a step in the wrong direction for SA. If we are not informed about the bad in SA how are we as citizens suppose to make a difference and better the situation?

Daniella  said:

Journalists actually have a responsibility to inform their communities about the happenings in the country it is actually so unethical that they are hiding information from us .Corruption will never stop in this country if everyone has no moral back bone to do whats right instead of doing what they told or being bribed .

I am reminded of a very apt quote by Tom Stoppard: "It's not the voting that's democracy, it's the counting". As the threat of opposition grows the ANC is finding it very difficult to adhere to democratic principles.

It is sad that corruption in this country has reached this stage, so many South Africans watch the news on SABC and rely on the content that is broadcasted, if certain content isn't being shown to the general public then sadly they are being deprived of the truth of what is going on in this country, this is a huge step in the wrong direction for SA!

nina  said:

I am not surprised at all that this is happening. It is very sad that the SABC is trying to cover up what is going on in our country just before the elections. It just shows you what the ANC has been doing to our country. We can just hope that in the future things will change for the better.

Clare  said:

I think that this actually silly, we as people have the Right to know what is happening in our Country. I watch the News almost every night and I also listen to it on the Radio, Corruption will be in our Every day lives, well the ANC is Running.

Alexis  said:

I don't even watch the news anymore. Everything is propaganda. You cannot trust anything except your own instinct. Corruption is rife, and it seems as though it will stay that way for some time.....until a change happens - and knowing this country, it will happen with violence.

Brumilde  said:
