SAA poor service

I recently had occasion to travel on some domestic flights on SAA.  In both Johannesburg and in Durban I had the same problems.  At OR Tambo International Airport, in Johannesburg, I almost missed my flight because the check-in area was so under-staffed and the staff so slow in dealing with whatever problem they were dealing with, that it took approximately 30 minutes to check in.

At King Shaka International, in Durban, the problems were similar.  In fact, the queue for service for business class was as long as economy.  It seems as if business class is under-staffed, so I went to the economy bag drop-off area where there was no queue, only to discover that, although airlines would like you to check in yourself, and then just use the bag drop queue, there was no staff member dealing with the bag drop queue!  If you checked yourself in you still had to go and join the check-in queue otherwise nobody would help you.  The overall service was shocking but I still prefer SAA to flying with small airlines who only have a few flights a day.

Ditch the plane and take a car. Road Tripping has always been more fun anyway.

I tend to believe that the services of the smaller airlines are better than SAA and SAA is much more expensive than the smaller airlines. Once again like a lot of things in life, you pay for the "name" but do not always get what you pay for.

I have never flown with SAA. I've only ever been on a plane about 4 times. It seems this problem is with a lot of airlines though. Not only airlines actually. Everywhere you go, they are slow... Honestly!

I have never flown SAA - it has always been Mango etc. So far so good and even though just a simple domestic flight takes you the whole day, i have not had a problem and will most likely keep flying the same.

I find that the service on the smaller airlines tends to be better, even though they don't have as many flights on a day. Mango has generally been a safe bet for me, and I am glad that Mango now flies out of Lanseria - which I far prefer to OR Tambo in terms of convenience and service.

I think that SAA is just too expensive for a local airline and there is nothing really anything that makes them any better than other airlines. If I fly locally I would much rather choose an airline like Kulula or Mango as the flights are cheaper and I have had good experiences with both those airlines. Should i fly international I will stick with Emirates Airways, i absolutely love their service.

Incompetence is the root of bad service and obviously they just dont care if you miss your fight, they will get their salary at the end of the month.

I honestly haven't flown on this airline for ages. Poor service delivery makes the whole experience unpleasant.

This is not a surprise to me. Everywhere you go the service is bad.
There are some staff members that doesnt want to help you or are just rude and grumpy.
This is very bad service. I cant believe this I would have expected more of such a big business.
How can they work like this? The airport is busy 24/7 I can only imagine how a big of a disaster it can get when its really busy.

It is so sad to see how this once proud airline has gone backwards. You can see it in many respects - look at how untidy some of the air hostesses are when they appear at the airport.

I personally have not had a bad experience with any airline, maybe I am just one of the lucky few.

To be honest I think the service of most airlines are shocking, especially on domestic flights, it seems as though they have lost their touch in terms of service, and standards have certainly dropped. Considering that SAA are one of the more expensive airlines you would think that their service would at least be in the average range. Maybe the results of all the customer care questionnaires they send out should be taken more seriously.

I have used Kulula a few times and found them to be very friendly and customer focused.

It's not only the airlines that are showing a lack of good service, everywhere where consumer services are involved, there is a poor performance and bad attitude towards the consumers. Maybe proper training and development should be given when you enter the field of consumerism.

SAA was once upon a time "the airline" to travel on. Nowadays it would seem that the politics surrounding the SAA caused their staff and services to go down the drain. I don't fly very often, but had the experience before to fly SAA and compared to Mango and Khulula, SAA lacks a lot of hospitality.

I have flown a few of the smaller airline charters and must say that their service has been good - no delays and great hospitality.

SAA is forever in the spotlight - perhaps this is simply an aftermath of the negativity that it forever attracts.

I have never had a problem with SAA, believe it or not sometimes have even found their flights cheaper than the local airlines which is weird. It is disappointing to see that someone has had bad experience with them. But like one says this type of service of level is the 'norm' in our country. Time to boycott some of these brands that make no effort to take not of our complaints or care what the customer has to say.

Lourien  said:

This is just one of the problems that we face with SAA, I was flying with them on one occasion as well, and actually noticed they were busy loading some luggage of the trailer and onto the airplane while I was already seated at the window and watched with what disrespect they actually through the bags off the trailer to load on the plain, my bag fell so hard but on the front side but it was no use in reporting it just now it would have gotten lost as well, this is why we should keep anything that can break with you and not place any of items in our luggage that could gotten damaged. Shocking Service.

Welcome to Africa...slow and inefficient. I liked the seats on SAA but they really shouldn't bother handing out dog food to their customers...disgusting on board food on local flights.

Sandra  said:

It is not only the airports or airlines providing an inefficient service, everywhere where one goes now, the service is far worse off and ten times slower, as if people are doing you a favour if you want to ring up a product or get a goods and or services

Everywhere you go you get poor service I went to spar the other day and the lady that help me was so rude and I ask her to help me and she slap her tongue and rolled her eye and I said to her that is not the way to treat your customers and I left everything and I walk out.

Lucretia  said:

I have always used Kulula and never had a problem with them. Their staff are friendly both on the ground as well as the cabin staff. I find SAA way over priced and their service has been shocking for years.

I don't think that it is only Airports that have poor Service delivery it pains to say that I am one women that can not stand shopping, people that work at the cashiers are so rude and are unfriendly, no one smiles these days. And also the biggest problem I have at any shop you can never find stuff of a pacific shop when you need help.
