I was quite impressed with some of the efforts that have been made on the Durban beachfront recently. In particular, plants have been planted in quite a few areas to try and recreate the dunes. The dune plants control the sand at the back of the beach and so a beach which has not had any plants on it for many years now has quite a bit of vegetation as this particular picture displays.
I was also interested to read about the reconstruction of the Durban Bay of Plenty Pier. It appears closed at the moment while they replaced it with a new wider concrete deck and geo-textile bags are going to be used to restore the design rock levels within the pier so as to change the current. Research shows that the rip currents will alter the sandbanks and because they have been going through the piers, which are not normal, the sandbanks have changed. Sandbanks in turn relate directly to the waves, so the real purpose of much of this is to restore the normal rip current and thus bring back better and bigger waves to the Durban beachfront.
In short, it appears that Durban is taking a lot of steps to make sure that the beachfront is modernised in an environmentally friendly way. The plants that would have grown along the sand dunes many years before the city was more commercially developed, are replanted and that the wave patterns are restored to what they were. I think it is to be applauded and hopefully it will lead to some of the big surfing events coming back to Durban. I was quite shocked to see what I have always known to be the Gunston 500, which subsequently became the Mr Price Pro, is now called The Ballito Pro, and presented by Billabong. I played golf with the former President of Billabong fairly recently, and quite honestly I had no idea as to the actual size of the company which is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. In any event, I digress, what surprised me the most was that the event is now held in Ballito and perhaps the wave conditions had something to do with it.

In another life I would have loved to be a horticulturist. To be a someone who uses scientific knowledge to cultivate and propagate plants and inject life into the world of the living.

The beach is probably one of the most amazing places that any person can go to. Just the thought of the beaches being perfectly formed and the waves rolling in to a certain point can leave somoene in awe of such a marvelous creation.
When you see the council starting to do something to beautify our beaches, and also seeing them trying to structure it in a way to change the current back to how it used to be, you realise that although we have so much wrong in our country, we have such a beautiful country.
And reading this, I feel like we still have hope.

Not too long ago those big storms really destroyed a lot of the south coast and beaches along the Durban coast line. I love Durban beaches especially because it is not too far from JHB. Unfortunately not many people take an interest in Nature and the conservation thereof so it is good to know that they are maintaining the beaches.

Durban has always had a wonderful feel about it. It was disappointing when the beached became dirty, littered and swept away. This is fantastic news! I believe that they are also working on declaring Margate beach on the South Coast a "blue flag" beach. So there are definitely some positive actions being taken along the South Coast!

I don't really like Durban. I prefer Ballito and Umhlanga. Purely because it wasn't as crowded and dirty as Durban Beaches were. Good for them for fixing it up.
Surf competitions would be cool... I have one friend that surfs when he goes to Australia. It wold be cool to go to Durban to watch him in a competition :)

It is comforting to know that some thought is going in to maintaining and restoring our beaches especially popular ones like Durban, this will definitely attract more tourists and will create a positive image for SA in terms of taking care of the environment. It will hopefully also encourage South Africans to play their part and look after our natural environment.

I think that Cape Town's beaches is good examples for Durban beaches and if they can start upgrading to that level it will be good for Durban and I think that yes then it will definitely be leading to the surfing events coming back. It all sounds very positive for Durban

It's good to hear that something is done to upgrade the Durban beach. It most probably lost interest from people because it was in such a bad state. It think once the vegetation has grown and the beach looks beautiful again, it will attract more attention. I haven't been to Durban in a while, mostly go to Cape Town. Maybe it's time to visit the other side of the coast for a change......

It is plus that there are some improvements in one of the biggest tourist destinations, so sad that the beaches are always overcrowded and dirty.

Im not a big Fan of Durban itself, its always over crowed and a nightmare in December times, I only go to Ballito,Ramsgate or Manaba ..Its more quiet and the beaches are in much better condition.
Its good to hear that they are improving the quality of Durban beaches, but I dont think Ill go to Durban even if the Beaches are in a better condition.

I am so glad to hear that they are giving more attention to Durban it's such a beautiful place but it has been neglected this past few years.
I visited Durban beach last year and the beach was very dirty.
I hope they dont stop at Durban and carry on with all the beaches that need it.

I am not a fan of Durban one bit. The only place I enjoyed was when I stayed at Beverley Hills Hotel and the beach in front of the hotel was well kept. Other than that if you walked a little further it was horrible, it smelled and was filled with dirt. I am glad that someone has decided to turn it around - still not a place I would be visiting any time soon. Durban is always crowded - not my cup of tea.

I am glad to hear that they are "sprucing up" the look of the beaches. I holiday more in the Cape due to my roots but feel that any clean up operation is worth it.

I have not been to Durban in many years but I have heard from friends that the beaches were looking incredibly sad and neglected. I am extremely happy to hear that they are maintaining and improving the beaches and I'm sure the holiday makers in December will be happy to enjoy the "new beaches."

This sound great. Something positive. I believe the reson for this would most probably be that Durban gets flooded with tourists during holidays. Big up to Durban.

I haven't been to Durban in a good few years, but last time I was there the beaches were not looking great. If you compare the standards of the beaches in the Western Cape there is no comparision as most of the beaches in the Western Cape are blue beaches. But this sounds very positive and I hope that the beaches in Durban become just as impressive as the Western Cape beaches.
