Every now and then we will see on a movie, and it is normally what is considered an “arty” movie, the fact that it was featured at the Sundance Film Festival or won an award there.
Before you think it is just some freaky independent Film Festival somewhere, let me tell you a little bit about my research! Firstly, it is held in Park City, Utah. It is the number one ski resort in America and hotel rooms during the peak season, over Christmas for example, typically go at $1600 a day. The Sundance Film Festival, held in the last 10 days of January, sees the same hotel charging $2000 and that is approximately a 4-star hotel.
That pretty much puts it out of reach for all of us straightaway, but I was stunned to see the cost of the actual tickets. You cannot get tickets for the individual movies – you have to take a package either for the last 5 days or so of the festival for $3000 or for the first 5 or 6 days of the festival for $3500! If you are on a budget package, which is hard once you booked the hotels but presumably you can stay 45 minutes away for $200 a night, you can for “just” $450 see movies that show only before 11am in the morning or after 10pm at night. It makes it pretty hard to get value for money because you will be going to bed after midnight and be expected to get up at the crack of dawn to watch your next movie. That will only set you back $450 – now multiply that by R14,50 and the next time you see that a movie was at the Sundance Film Festival don’t think it was just a bunch of hippies watching weird movies! If nothing else, and if they are hippies, they must be extremely wealthy hippies because 5 or 6 days of watching the movies at the normal time is going to set you back approximately R50 000,00. That of course is not going to include your transport, your food or your accommodation.

"Hippies" aka connoisseur of art should never be underrated. Another prime example is how generously donors donate to various "Art" faculties before donating to the ordinary-run-of-mill-faculties such as Commerce, Business of Law at Universities.
They don't call them Art Connoisseurs for no reason.
In fact the word Connoisseurs just rings of wealth, wealth and well more wealth.

Hell no spending so much money for movies, but I think again if you can afford it then well.

Wow that is really expensive, I could never justify paying that much for movies unless I was stinking rich and had nothing better to do with my money

I am sure it would be a wonderful experience, for those who have an interest and lots of cash. I could never justify spending that amount on a movie.

I'm sure this is a wonderful experience, I do enjoy watching movies, but I am not sure that I would be willing to spend so much of money on a festival like this.

I do enjoy my movies, I do not particularly spend hours on end watching movies, but when I have my lazy day once in a while I will watch movies. I just cannot justify spending so much money to watch movies for 5 straight days.
On my budget, I will stick to netflix :)

It sounds like an experience. I'm sure the people that go to these festivals don't need to worry about the costs involved

I think it is only very rich people who watch movies at Sundance Film Festival, At a cost of R50 000,00. excluding transport, food and accommodation, sounds very expensive.

Wow that is a lot of money, I can certainly think of better things to do with that kind of money.

That is ridiculous for a movie. Even if I had the money I could put it to a better use.

It is ridiculous to see how much one has to pay for a movie marathon! We are quite into our movies, and I must say, even if I had the budget for it, I would still be doing what I'm doing today and that is rent a couple of movies at the nearest movie store, make a huge family bed in the lounge and sit and watch movies with my family at a cost of under R200 and everybody can enjoy it in the leisure of our home.

I actually really enjoy Sundance movies, once you understand the meaning behind everything its actually really beautiful But some of them are really too weird for my taste.
In Rosebank Mall they actually have a Cinema Nouveau, which generally only plays artsie movie.

I would not pay that amount for even more movies, that is absolutely ridiculous! Imagine what other interesting and far better things I could do for entertainment on a R50 000 budget. I'd give this a miss thanks!

Lifestyles of the rich and famous hey. Seems a bit lame and more of an image thing which I really have little interest in. They probably spend all this money just to post a couple of pictures on Instagram.

It's a huge industry, I however, will not pay x amount of money to go support this industry. It's a huge chunk of money from society to increase their wealth, while we have to endure high prices

My word, that is insane. 'Arty' movies. Just go to a certain section in the video store and get them and it would not be as expensive.

That is a lot of money and most definitely out of reach for most people. I do think though, if you are into this kind of thing and have the cash to do so, why not? I do enjoy arty films, but probably won't enjoy watching movie after movie after movie.

I know movies are expensive these days, but that is just too pricy now. I am sure there are people that can afford it and by all means they need to enjoy it. The Sundance Festival sounds very interesting and it is a big attraction, but I will not be able to go to such events and I prefer watching movies at home, making my own snacks and being able to pause the movie at my convenience.

There is a lot of people that will pay to go to these "arty movies'. I would like to go watch one, it is something different.

There is a lot of money in the movie industry, but it also depends on which types of movies are being filmed and if it suits the required tastes. However I do not go to the cinemas to support such, as the movie ticket and the snacks in itself are incredibly overpriced

That's a lot of money for a movie, I think that it is on the other had cool something else to do other then sit at home, I think being a South African you want to explore everything so if you willing to pay +/- R50 000.00 Then by all means have Fun. Life is Short after All.

Those prices are excessive - but then again I am sure that it is targeted at an exclusive audience. At the Rosebank Cinema an 'arty' movie is often premiered and there are giveaways and speakers, making it a truly worthwhile experience. To simply 'endure' movie after movie that requires focus doesn't sound as appealing. Is this on par to the Cannes Arts Film Festival? Interesting!
