Data prices falling at last

I am glad to see that our data prices are finally beginning to fall.  They are still way too high compared to international prices, but for example, MTN now makes a 1 gig data bundle for R65 and 2 gigs for R99.  I think South Africa has some of the most expensive data in the world and I would certainly support the Twitter campaign #DataMustFall#DMF.

I wish Vodacom was as cheap as MTN, my word Vodacom is very expensive. I am posting the posts for data must fall. They too very expensive.

It's really about time this happens. Any phone is useless without data and the cell phone providers have been making it impossible for us to keep up with the prices of data. I'm very happy to hear about it.

This is great news I think it is about time. I would definitely change my provider from Vodacom to MTN, I would save a fortune in data.

I am very glad to hear that the data price is going down.
It is really ridiculous how much we must pay for data.
It is much cheaper in other countries. This is great news

The cost of data in our country is extremely high and I often see those comparison tables circulating on Facebook and it really is insane how expensive it is in South Africa to buy data and how incredibly cheap it is abroad. Vodacom needs to jump on this and drop their data prices - R149 for a gig is ridiculous!

This is great news
I also think we pay more for Data than any other place in the world
I just hope CellC will start dropping their Data prices as I pay R145 for 1gig Data

It is sad that we pay such high costs in our country. I often feel that what is given to us with the one hand is taken away with the other. If petrol goes up, it goes up hugely, when it comes down, it comes down minimally. And like wise with so many other things in our country. Are they ever going to allow the average man on the street to live without every drop of blood being squeezed out of them :-(

Finally! That is very good news data is the one thing I cant go without. We have Wifi at home from CellC and it is the best thing ever.

At the moment I'm paying R160 for 1G but I'm moving to the one that's R99 for 2G Data is something that doesn't last long hey no matter what you do

I hope that Vodacom comes to the party as well - how can you justify a R100 price difference for the same product? South Africans have been ripped off for too long. Good on MTN, but really it could have come sooner. I hope Vodacom and Cell C promptly follow suit. I know I would change from Vodacom in a heartbeat if they cannot be competitively priced.

I think Iým going to change to MTN I am always without data as Vodacom eats your data. Yay to MTN. Wonder when Vodacom will charge less.

This is wonderful news. I agree a phone is useless without data. Today we rely mostly on whatsapp and social media account to stay in contact and of course you get those who are addicts to facebook and will die without it. 1 gig for R 65 is unbelievable, just a few months ago I paid R 160 for 1 gig. Ridiculous.

This is great but I'm with Vodacom. Vodacom's Data must fall and so must petrol and then I can really have a good holiday. :)

A phone would be useless without data, you need data to do the very basics on a phone! I am so glad that the prices are eventually coming down!

Fantastic news, I spend far too much money on data! I wish we could just get in line with international prices. Data is even cheaper in countries like India.

Data has become craze expensive I cant wait to get home and connect to the Wifi because all these background apps really takes so much data.

Daniella  said:

I agree the price of data is ridiculous you might as well invest in a portable wifi that is uncapped then to waste money on buying a gig that is around R120 every two weeks.

Nicky  said:

That's good news and about time too. Id love to know the reason for our data cost being so much higher than other countries.

Liesl  said:

As Bon Jovi once said: WOOOAAHHHH!

Great news for consumers, the price of data and how quickly it depletes is ridiculous.

It sounds like international prices are low and not only on data prices but in most of the things. I think if indeed SA has the most expensive data in the world then #DataMustFall.

Suzanne  said:

data is key to information and the fact that it is expensive makes access to information more problematic.surely the government should be at the fore front of the data must fall.

Juliet  said:

Data is such a rip off. Vodacom just gave me a R8500 data bill for October for using Youtube! I haven't used Youtube on my phone so you can just imagine! Obviously it was opened and just ran in the background of my phone for a month so I will welcome any decrease in the cost of it :)

Zanell  said:

That's a R100 less for a gig on MTN, I usually pay R160 for a gig which lasts me about 3 weeks. I am happy that data prices are falling it's about time.

Michelle  said:

I am so disappointed because recently I`ve moved to a FNB sim card. You can only buy data on your online banking and not in the shops. Their data bundle rates are R1 cheaper than Vodacom bundles etc.

Jessica Apfel   said:
on Thursday 15-Dec-16 08:31 AM
There are other African countries that have far cheaper data rates! Crazy to think that within a developing economy we are exploited to such an extent? If I am not mistaken, Nigeria has some of the cheapest cell phone usage rates - with cheaper rates comes better connectivity to the world around and information! We are cutting off many people who cannot afford to stay in touch and in tune!
