“The Case Against Sugar” is the new book from Gary Taubes. He is also the best-selling author of the book, “Why We Get Fat”. I have previously read and written about “Why We Get Fat” and I am currently reading his brand-new book. He says the purpose of the book in his author’s note is to present the case against sugar – both sucrose and high fructose corn syrups as the principal cause of the chronic diseases that are most likely to kill us. He points out that a third of all adults are now obese, two-thirds are overweight and almost 1 in 7 is diabetic and 1 in 4 will die of cancer, yet we continue to ignore the prime suspects for all of these diseases and act as if sugar is just a source of harmless pleasure. He says that the Case against Sugar is an argument for the prosecution of sugar, as if it were a criminal case. I love to read these types of books at the beginning of the year, particularly when I realise that I am certainly addicted to sugar myself and that it is a major problem in my life that I need to tackle, so I hope that books like this will be an inspiration to do so.

I usually don't read books that involve any diet-talk or what to avoid, have more of etc. BUT this actually looks like a good read in the format that it has been written. I think most of us have an issue with sugar and I admire people who can keep this under control.

It's always the good things in life that are the most dangerous. Alexis makes a valid point, even if you don't really eat sweets, sugar are hidden in almost everything that you eat. Most fruit contain sugar as well. It does make sense that it would kill you as it's properly something most people struggle with to let go. I know I am one of those.

Sugar is so addictive and so bad for you yet it is not only in obvious items like sweets, it is also hidden by food manufacturers in items where you wouldn't suspect there to be sugar. For example, many commercially produced smoothies come in large sizes and can be sweetened with things like fruit juice, ice cream or syrup, which increases their sugar content. Some of them contain ridiculously high amounts of calories and sugar, containing over 96 grams, or 24 teaspoons of sugar in a single serving!

I love sweeties, chocolates and anything sweet.
I always try and resist but it is such a comfort to have something sweet that it is not always easy.

Should look into reading it, but to be fair. lots of other things can also contribute to unhealthy living. its cheaper to buy a packet of sweets then it is to buy fresh fruit these days. and as one of our needs as humans we must eat. but we have a choice as to what we put in our bodies,

I believe everything should be done in moderation, especially when it comes to eating and I don't think you should ever deprive yourself of something nice once in a while. I enjoy something sweet every now and again but I am more a chips kind of person which is also very bad. I think if you excersise and do not stuff yourself with every meal you do not have to be that strict on yourself.

I have a terrible sugar addiction and need to read this book urgently. If I could control my sugar intake, I'm sure I could control and keep my weight stable. I have tried refraining from eating chocolates often but I always seem to replace it with other sugary items. :)

Yes Sugar is like a drug, when I start including sugar to my diet, sweets, cakes or just cup of coffee with one spoon, I can not stop. Oh well I am not smoking, neither drinking, so I suppose one more habit to kill to say no sugar! Thank you Mathilda for interesting comment on sweetener, I did not know that sweetener can be so dangerous too.....

I'm with Dune on this one. Im definitely a sugar addict, I absolutely love my chocolates. I would rather eat a chocolate than an actual meal. My favorite for lunch is Speckled Eggs. Yum.

I have to confess, I am a sugar addict. I have tried to cut out sugar, however that lasted a total of 2 days, when my husband bought me a packet of Willy Wonka "Nerds" and said "please just have your sugar because I can't deal with your moods anymore" Its horrible to actually realize how addicted one can be to sugar, especially when it effects your moods, as soon as the cravings starts to kick in. I know it's not a healthy addiction, but its a far better addiction than smoking, drugs, alcohol etc.

Think I definitely need to cut out more sugar in my life, I have started being more conscious though. I would definitely read this book. I don't think I could ever cut out sugar completely though.

Leaving Sugar is a Hard, I battle losing sweets in my day to day, especially when days are hard. I do try my best to leave the sweet treats but i find it hard. I love my Chocolates but since this Diet that i am on i am very limited to Carbs so i am facing this battle strong but it does get Hard.

I don't drink sugar at all I always use sweetener and that is also harmful as it contains Aspartame(Aspartame is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute in some foods and beverages) as very high doses of aspartame can increase the risk of some blood-related cancers and also several other side -effects the other option is Cane Sugar but even healthy sugar should be used in small amounts, so I just think its better to leave sugar out completely

Reading a book are my way to relax. Reading a book that will benefit your health and lifestyle are most certainly a bonus. While I read my favourite book, having a snack will be the cherry on top of relax mode. My snack will most definitely be something savoury than sweet.

I don't have much of a sweet tooth and never have, even as a child. It always surprises me how much sugar people consume though. If I order a cup of coffee somewhere and I say "No sugar" people are taken aback- as if it's absurd not to have sugar in your coffee! I'm not much of a fan of sweetners or sugar substitutes either- they do more harm than good, rather avoid it all together.

I would call myself a sugar addict and once I have a taste of it I cant seem to stop! I suppose it is a discipline, and everything should be enjoyed in moderation. I think when people overdo it that's when the health issues become a concern. I also think that children should be taught from a young age to enjoy sugar in moderation.

Many of us are unaware of the sugar count in many of the foods we eat and so are ignorant to our true sugar intake. Perhaps the implication of a Sugar Tax may not be so bad after all? Considering that as a third world country we still rate within the top 5 in terms of obesity in the world

I'm more of a savory person that sweet. Although one could argue that savory treats can often also contain unhealthy ingredients such bread and pie pastry etc. Sugar is not the best thing for you especially if it is something you would enjoy on a regular basis. Keep it in moderation and select the fruits you eat daily carefully. If you going to have grapes, limit it to a small amount for the day as it contains a lot of sugar as opposed to e.g. pawpaw

Finding something these days without some kind of sweetner or suger in is next to impossible. Everything in moderation is okay with me. I think it's okay to treat yourself with a sweety every once in a while. We only live once after all.

I must admit that I have a sweet tooth-chocolate is my biggest weakness.
I do try to avoid sugar in tea and cereals. In my mind, sugar in cereals, fruit and vegetables cancels out the nutritional value of these foods. I also very rarely drink fizzy drinks and would rather have water. I doubt though, whether I'll ever be able to avoid chocolate.

I had no idea that the stats were that bad. Personally, I won't overdo sugar because I see what it does. I like my sugar BUT everything in moderation... People get greedy and over-indulge and that's when it becomes a real problem.
I do prefer savoury over sweet, and anyone who knows me, knows that I always have chocolates or sweets in my room that I hardly ever touch... So they go searching for them lol...

I think you'll only get a hand full of people who doesn't like sugar, most of us love sugar, are addicted to it. It true what Alexis say, almost everything we eat and drink today contains sugar. It's most certainly not something that will just disappear off the market. I prefer salty stuff but like my chocolates now and again. My dad is a diabetes, he use to drink 5 spoons of sugar in his coffee, glad to see that he went off sugar completely. But being diabetic is bad and even alcohol is not allowed. You just have to look after yourself and try to cut down on the sugar, not the easiest thing to do.

It is so easy to get addicted to sugar, I go through stages where I am fine not having any and not eating cholates or sweets, but as soon as I start enjoying these I start craving more cholates and treats. Without knowing my sugar intake increases. The best way I found to reduce my sugar intake is eating more vegetables and before long I am off the sugary treats and chocolate cake... Mmmmm But still love it ! You have to try and maintain a balance although its not always easy.

I am not a sugar addict at all, I enjoy my little bit of sugar, say in my coffee etc, the problem however is that although I am saying this, there is sugar in almost everything / most things that you eat, esp the unhealthy foods. So a person just needs to make the right decisions i suppose, instead of having two sugars, have one. Instead of wanting a chocolate, have an apple insead, it is the little things that make a difference
