Tesla builds a huge lead in self-driving cars

There is obviously a lot of news about all the different companies at the moment that are investigating self-driving cars or testing software.  What a lot of people don’t appreciate though is that, in today’s data-driven world, Tesla is building an incredible lead over the competition.  All of their cars have built-in software that already allows auto-steering, etc, and the cars feed the data back to Tesla.  In addition to that, they have an almost background tracking of the cars even when they are not in self-drive mode, allowing them to build up all sorts of data from all of their models out on the road, as to traffic, traffic conditions, roads, etc.  No competitor of Tesla has this at the moment – so whether it is Uber or Google testing a few self-driving cars, that is hardly the same as hundreds of thousands of Tesla owners out there logging up the kilometres for Tesla everyday (Tesla sold 80 000 cars during 2016).  It is going to give Tesla a huge lead in the self-driving car game and I believe it is going to lead to them even being a very dominant player at some stage or other, or forcing one of the major role-players to buy them out at a steep price. It is certainly one of the shares that I have invested in over the last two years.

I am terrible with comfort zones but it will definitely be an experience worthy to remember, whether self-driving cars will become part of our daily lives reality we will have to see

Tesla is truly amazing. The self-driving car is the future. Take away the element of human error and it could save many lives. However, the question is to what extent can we really eradicate human error? Whether its in the design phase or implementation phase, something is not going to be up to scratch. Still...we have to embrace these new technologies or else we will find ourselves being "Blockbusters" .

I don't know if I'll ever trust a car that drives itsself. If I ever buy such a car I'll probably drive it myself. Technology is amazing but these cars probably cost an arm and a leg.

Technology is starting to become so advanced that people will literally not have to do anything for themselves anymore. I am a hands on person and i will go absolutely crazy if I have to sit in a car that I am not in control of.

Tesla is doing incredibly well for themselves, although i still dont think i will be comfortable in a vehicle that drives itself. I feel better when i am in control of the driving so i dont think i will cope with a self driven vehicle. But i am just one person, with driving issues, there are millions of people who would give anything to be able to have a car like that.

Technology is an amazing thing, however, I do not think a self-driving car has the ability to make use of logic in order to arrive at the best decision immediately, like when an accident is about to occur. I think I would feel safer being driven by an actual human being rather than a computerized motor vehicle.

Surely these are very expensive and I don't think everybody will be able to afford it. If these cars are really the future then I hope that normal fancy cars become much cheaper.

Yeah, I would stick to my own driving thank you, I am a nervous passenger as is never mind a car driving itself. Lol I trust myself with my own life. But its still amazing that technology has come this far already.

Ya this isn't taking lazy to a whole new level hey? but then again probably better for a car to drive it's self rather than some people driving. Just my thoughts.

If on my hands I had funds to purchase this type of vehicles for all our taxi drivers on South African roads, i would do that today. Taxi drivers and bus drivers should just watch this vehicles drive, how it will decrease number of accidents and traffic on our roads!!!

Although this is amazing, I will still not be trusting a computerized vehicle. Technology fails us everyday. Unless this becomes the "norm", I will just keeping on driving myself around.

It is amazing how technology has improved and how Tesla is making sure they are staying ahead in the game, and keeping records of all the roads and conditions of the roads which will improves the cars driving in the future as well. They are making sure they are keeping their competitive advantage which they have in the market. Cars with auto-steering will definitely improve safety on the roads with less chances of errors and accidents that may occur.

So amazing .. love technology. Would love to one day ride in one. gonna be like something out of the 5th dimension hehe. Of course the price sjoe ok , once can dream, but i am sure as tesla perfects the self drive so will other car companies start dabbing their fingers in the honey pot

I will most definitely not trust a machine with my life. But the way things have changed and the rate new cars are designed is just amazing. Well done to Tesla as well for achieving such high standards and good luck for the future.

Amazing break through for Tesla however I still cant imagine me sitting in a car driving itself where I'm not in control think I would be so paranoid and on my high horses every time the vehicle veers or approaches another vehicle.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this, however there is no doubt that Tesla has a head start on all their possible competitors, especially because they probably started with research way in advance and have had the opportunity to correct possible flaws and foresee potential problems. If I ever have a chance to go for a self-driving car I would definitely go for Tesla!

I think this car will be amazing. Its absolute awesome the way technology is improving and I myself would love to have one of these cars. I agree, it does give Telsa a huge lead and don't think they would be beaten easily and certainly one of the best places to have shares invested.

Sinead  said:

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is awesome to know that this kind of technology exists but I wouldn't be able to trust it fully. I need a human to drive. I already don't like other people driving my car, now there's no driver?! (0_0)

I think that this is an awesome development in technology, I just don't think i would personally feel safe, another thing is that a lot of people are going to be unemployed because of this new technology. Uber drivers are going to have there jobs replaced by technology and I personally would prefer having a human uber driver to chat to.

I don't like driving but I'd rather drive than be driven by a non-human lol! That being said I can only imagine that it is a good investment and will only get better. People will definitely start changing their vehicles to this and I would probably too... but in many more years. The price is just not in my budget :)

I think it is absolutely incredible that a car can drive itself! I am a very paranoid driver because of my car accident so I don't think I would trust a machine with my life though. Isn't having background tracking a bit invasive? Then again, the guys at CSI could benefit from it!

Bianca  said:

I'm not a huge fan of having a vehicle drive itself, I think I am far too much of a control freak to ever be ok with that. With that being said, it is phenomenal how technology is evolving and I do believe this will be a great concept for those who feel they can trust a vehicle to drive on it's own. Tesla are certainly making a breakthrough in the market and will surely in the near future perhaps be a monopoly. My biggest concern with vehicles that drive themselves is the reaction to unforeseen situations and reactions that need to be taken to avoid collisions, how are they programming that?

It sounds like Tesla did a well done job. I think the number of the cars they sold during 2016 speaks for itself and shows that they managed catching lots of people’s interest

Technology is so good these days. I think this will be a big benefit to people. I will love to have a self-driving car.
To sell 80 000 cars a year is very good this will definitely put them in the lead.

I am not very invested into all of this - so do not know much. All i know is that self driven vehicles could change things quite drastically esp for those whom have trouble with driving etc. My worry is when a taxi suddenly stops in front of you, a pedestrian runs across the road, will the technology be that good to avoid a bad situation

Lucretia  said:

I am a bit of a sceptic so, I think I will stick to driving a car until they have been on the road for a loooooong time. With the way our taxi's drive, will the self-driving cars be able to react quickly to the sudden stop of a taxi or the cutting in of one - even our able bodied drivers battle with them. So yes, it will take a long time for me to decide whether it would be worth purchasing something like a self-driven car.

Clare  said:
on Friday 03-Mar-17 08:20 AM
I don't like the idea of my car driving by itself I think I am very happy being in control of my car. But I am sure that people out there do like these cars and they will us it like a celebrity would not need a driver anymore so she or he could save cash ( Not that they need to ) on using a driver. But my question is, if you are involved in an accident with this car who is to blame? you can blame a car can you?

Jessica Apfel   said:
on Friday 03-Mar-17 08:05 AM
I have not followed the trend of self-driving cars, it seems almost too 'futuristic' (for lack of a better word). Again I raise the question as to whether or not an automated vehicle would be able to react and take the requisite evasive action within a situation as a human being would - this requires a degree of judgement that I am not sure that a self-driven car would have. That being said, we have to embrace the advancement of technology and it is truly astounding! In terms of share prices, Snap chat seems to have taken the market by storm the last few days - I am yet to hear of Tesla's share developments.
