I have always struggled to understand the whole luxury watch market. I have a number of friends who are forever explaining to me how they have bought a Rolex at a discount and that they can actually resell the Rolex that they own for more money than they just paid a dealer for it. In other words, and this is all based on the allegation that they know some amazing dealer somewhere and as a result of that can get more for the watch when they resell it than what the dealer has just sold it to them for!
To me it does not make sense, because it is obvious that the dealer had to make a profit in selling it to them and they can’t be selling it “below cost”. I came across an article recently on Barron’s that confirmed my suspicions but took them even further. They explained that websites like www.watchwarehouse.com sell men’s watches at huge discounts - sometimes up to 40% off the listed price and while I am mentioning Rolex, some of the models that I saw have been advertised at 26% off, etc. The problem is that basically nobody will now believe the retail price because everybody knows you can get the watches at a discount elsewhere and whatever that minimum price is that you can find on those websites becomes the maximum value for the watch. It is not realistic to assume, unless you are dealing only with fools, that you can sell the watch second hand to somebody else for more than they can buy it for new!
My watch is an IWC Portuguese Chronograph and it too is listed on the website, although the price has gone up since I bought it a number of years ago. The exact model that I have was not for sale on the website, but most of the prices were much cheaper than the retail price, so for example the black version of the watch that I have normally retails at $6000 is available on this website for $5,168 – much less than listed in the shops. It is still more than what I paid for the white face version of the same watch, but it does show that people who like to talk about trading their Rolex’s, etc, are to a certain extent living in a dream world or relying on finding somebody more silly than they were, in terms of believing that they really were buying something for less than at cost. Apparently, they source most of these watches from the very same dealers who sell them in the shops for the higher prices – by calling up authorised dealers and getting them for example to agree to a 40% discount before on-selling it on the websites or by the various companies at a 30% discount and pocketing the 10% difference.
Apparently there is an excess inventory at the moment, around the world of luxury watches and so everyone has been forced to turn a blind eye to this practice of trying to get rid of excess stock by heavy discounting. In short, if you have the money, now is the time to get that expensive watch you have been looking for noting that the websites do have much cheaper watches like Fossil. They also have Mont Blanc pens from 20% to 25% lower than we see them retailed for in the shops. Another famous website that deals with reselling watches is Chrono24. One watch you will struggle to find on most of these websites, and it will be a disappointment to those who own them, are Tag Heuer – and that is because those types of watches are typically shunned by collectors and not actually sought after. You will hundreds of those listed on Ebay. While marketed as an up-market watch it is seen by collectors as being more mainstream and not exclusive.

I don't see the need in buying an expensive what where you can buy a cheaper one which does the exact same thing and at the end of the day when it gets stolen or brakes then you have such a big loss.

i dont know much about watches, if it works and its pretty ill wear it, also not into brands but the R100 watch from the China mall doesn't last as long as a R1000 watch from America Swiss so you do get what you pay for

I live in South Africa and will not every justify paying some of the ridiculous amounts of money on a watch that can be taken off you in a heartbeat. I made a decision a long time ago to not even be interested in watches or fancy jewellery because I would probably just lock it away or be too paranoid to wear it. I think it is absolutely crazy to spend obscene amounts on a Rolex etc - in my opinion it is all about a lifestyle and to brag to your friends that you have the money etc. While it definitely is nice to treat yourself if you have been working terribly hard, I still cannot justify the prices of luxury watches and pens. Absolutely crazy! (Discount or not!)

If you can afford the price then go for it and I always say if you can afford expensive stuff spoil yourself.

Im not one for watches or jewelry, so I wouldn't really want to spend that much money on a watch. I must say though that it seems that it is the new in thing.

I would never in my life spend that much money on a watch. It's insane.

I don't own a watch and in the past when I have owned one, I didn't wear it that often. For this reason I don't ever see myself buying a watch for these kind of prices. But I do find this interesting.

I love watches but I would definitely not pay high prices for it. I don't see why people would pay such heavy prices for a watch. They have to basically announce it to people that they are wearing a Rolex watch because people don't really care what watch you are wearing when asking the time.

I must say I really don't ever wear watches, nor would I ever pay the ridicules amount that they charge for them. I think they are honestly way over priced.

Genuine Investors play on the stock exchange! My personal feeling is that a luxury watch purchase is personal, like buying that sports car when you have finally arrived and think of yourself as successful. A watch by no means is an investment, but rather a "Personal Reward' for oneself. However, maybe the thought that you could one day sell it at a higher value allows the purchaser to justify the guilt of spending so much money on such a small expensive item?

I heard a show on the radio the other morning featuring the owner of a pawn shop in SA, and who is also the star of the SA Pawn Stars TV show, saying that the only watches he would buy to sell are Rolex watches and that you are likely to buy them at a discounted price only to sell them for more down the line. His reasoning was that because they are such collector's items they are a bit like famous paintings where you will always have the right collector willing to pay in order to add to or "complete" his collection. I think the other watches he mentioned were Breitling Flight Watches because there were only a few of a certain type made which are immensely sought after amongst collectors.

I never understand the need to have a pricey watch anyway. It still tells the same time as what a cheap watch would.

i agree with Bianca, it is a waste of money to buy an expensive watches, even with a discount .and later one needs to worry about storing it in a safe or worried about being robbed, worried about damaging it etc.
why people even buy watches nowdays?

It sounds like when buying a luxury watch from website you pay less money than when buying from the shop. I think the person who knows about the website like www.watchwarehouse.com won’t go buy a watch in shop or buy a second hand watch.

My friend went to Italy Bologna and bought me a Fossil watch it was much cheaper that side than here in SA
I just think it all depends where you buy the watch and if you go to the Brand store, it’s a little risky to go to a random watch store and buy a watch because it can be a fake and that can also be the reason they give you so much discount

Normally I can’t even see the difference between luxury jewellery and costume jewellery. I can’t believe that someone will be such large amounts for watches. You can also read the time on your phone or computer etc. But I must say when someone is wearing a watch, it looks complete.

I can't see the big fuss about a luxury watch, but then again we all have different taste and different values. I really can not see myself paying a ton of money for a watch and then still pay insurance on it as well, the same with jewelery. Yes buy quality but I'm not one for expensive stuff and then end up regretting it if it was stolen, lost or broken. In my opinion, there are way better and nicer looking watches than a Rolex for example. I have to agree that I can't see how they buy a watch for less and then resell it for more, it does not make sense.

Well working for private jewellers for some time, its actually easy to make a profit even when still giving a good discount on it, its mark up is actually 100% so you are still making your profit even after giving a proper discount. With a markup like that it is easy to sell a watch for 40% discount and still make a profit especially if you have a contact. Rolex depending on the model you buy will also be able to go up in price as some of them are made of gold, the gold price is also mostly going up and then some on them have diamonds in the dials too which explains the prices tags they come with. So the companies who supply the retail companies actually are selling these watches for a "discounted" price but from the retail price and even after the discount they receive more than what the retailers actually pay them for as they are supposed to sell it at cost price to the retailer and they do not they sell it to the public at a retail price minus a huge discount, but you need to know the type of watch you are buy and remember you don't have the same aftermarket service buying online as what you get from retailers.

I am completely obsessed with watches and I have been since I was a child, I am always purchasing new watches even though I do not need them. I do however struggle to understand the purpose of buying an insanely expensive watch like these luxury watches, I understand that they have a lot of value but come on, it tells the time? Regardless of my love for watches, I have never even thought of buying a watch for more than R4000.00 as it just seems like an insane waste of money for me. I have a lot of friends that have collections of luxury watches that actually just lay in the box and that's it, you can only wear one watch at a time and that is a great expense to have lying in a box!
