A lot of my friends, who know I am a big Tiger Woods fan, gave me a lot of grief about Tiger being arrested for being under the influence. One must remember that under the influence does not necessarily mean alcohol – it can be drugs or prescription drugs in the form of medicine. I try to remind them that most sport stars generally tend to have quite a few problems largely because they often come from underprivileged backgrounds and then suddenly have huge amounts of money hoisted onto them and have not necessarily always being brought up the right way. I am not talking about Tiger Woods at all in this instance, but whatever sport you are looking at – whether it is rugby, cricket, etc – there have always been scandals, people who have taken bribes, people who have alcohol problems or abused women, etc.
In fact, it seems that when one looks at that category as a business, in other words, to say some people do sport as a business, they seem to have a far higher percentage of bad behaviour amongst their stars than in the ordinary business world.
I think most people are flawed in some way or other – we are not perfect. To think that people, simply because they can hit a ball beautifully with a gold club, or curve a soccer ball with their feet, now suddenly have class, manners and know how to behave is a mistake. At the moment, for example in golf, the number one player in the world has previously been suspended for using cocaine and allegedly for involvement with other players’ wives. Soccer players seem to avoid that most of the time, because in many cases it is just run of the mill news to hear of some exposé of yet another soccer star with prostitutes or having affairs and those of us who follow cricket in South Africa will never forget the cases involving Hansie Cronje and the bribes, etc.
I guess, by the same token, when I listen to pop music, I don’t consider pop stars poets. Some of them have catchy lyrics, sometimes written by themselves and sometimes not, but the vast majority of them don’t write poetry and should not be confused with poets and the vast majority of sport stars should not be confused with role models.
If you are talking about role models, we are talking about people like Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, Margaret Thatcher and in my mother’s case, Mother
Theresa, although there have been a lot of revelations about her in recent years. I
guess the point I am making is that one should not confuse one’s admiration for the
way somebody either sings or plays sport and to allow you to then, because they do
something like that so well, think that that person is a role model and is classy and
sensible in every way. In some cases they might be, in other cases, just like
everybody else, they are flawed human beings and when they are held up to more
media exposure than the rest of us, then it all comes crumbling down.

i think anybody in the spot light has 100 times more stress then us regular folk down here. so its always easy to judge others. oh but they have money and fame. just look at what comes with it, people going through your garbage to find someone on you. no privacy. if you made a mistake the whole world knows about it

No one is perfect we all make mistakes is not easy being a celeb where you are constantly being watched and judged. Broadcasting the incident to the world makes the situation even worse.

I agree. Living in the spotlight can put a lot of pressure on a person. It's like people expect you to be a perfect human being just because they look up to you. I suppose when you have so many fans and fame you have to walk on egg shells because you know when you mess up the entire world would know of it.

This is very true, just because someone has been endowed with a special skill it does not make them perfect and we should not expect them to be either. The pressure of constantly being in the spotlight can also take its toll and lead to the scandals we often hear about regarding celebrities.

I suppose one thing that we must remember is that these stars are only human and they too, like the rest of us, have the right to mess up. We as fans and onlookers should not be passing judgement because if our lives were to be thrust into the spotlight I doubt many of us would come out looking all that fantastic.

I would never want to be a star. Nothing is sacred or private in the life of a Star. You cannot make any human error in life and everyone knows what's going on and its published everywhere for people to see. The money might be great but your life is not just yours anymore. I choose my own personal life thank you.

You see when you become famous you are no longer a normal person, you will get taken into a whole new light. EG Normal person smacks someone outside a club, no one ever hears or even cares about it. Then you get poor Justin Beiber and he does it and everyone should boycot him and how disgraceful he is etc, not that I condone it but just saying. So now that he is famous he is not entitled to be a normal person who also gets upset and messes up like so many others. I mean as is how many average people are dying, killing and stealing because they on drugs, yet the bigger story will be of the star that drank too much or had taken too much meds etc. That is why I am glad I am not famous nor would I ever want to be.

I agree -just because someone has "made it", is a star athlete or performer does not mean that they assumed the role of a role model to anyone. The importance they have, or whatever pedestal they are placed on, is attributed to them by those who idolize them. I've never heard of a star in whatever field saying "I am famous and I promise to always live up to each and everyone's standards". Firstly it would be impossible, but secondly they never undertook to be any person's role model- they are just doing what they are good at! Personally I like knowing that they are human too.

No one is perfect, we all make mistakes, unfortunately when you live in the lime light your flaws will be revealed and made worse. I won’t be able to live like that at all. You have to constantly make sure you are ‘perfect’.

I agree no one is perfect. I think to be a sports star is so stressful and we can't judge them for using drugs or abusing alcohol or whatsoever. We are all human beings and no one is perfect

Most people think when you are famous you are automatically this perfect example of how a Human should be and this is so far from true, the only reason Tiger Woods is famous is because God gave him this amazing talent to play golf
That does not make him any different to any other person we all have our flaws and obviously if you have media people always around you just waiting to catch you at your lowest it will happen and it will be all over social media and blown out of proportion

There is nothing worse to me than people that think they are better than other people. We are all the same. We all are people and we all having flaws no one is perfect.

We all humans after all and we all have our flaws. People tend to put celebrities and sport stars or someone famous on a pedestal forgetting that they are human beings with flaws. Role Models are not necessary celebrities. The sad thing is that most teenagers sees pop singers as their role models and a lot of these singers does not have the best views of life, I think also think that celebrities forgets that youngster and people looks up to them.

Sports stars and celebrities need to be careful of how they conduct themselves they are being watched constantly and will get caught. another thing is with the amount of money they earn surely they can take an uber or get a driver to take them home when they in a state whether it be drugs, alcohol, or prescription drugs . If we can do it why cant they, they have the money there's no excuse.

Unfortunately many 'stars' forget that people tend to hold them to a higher standard, although they are also just people. The media loves blowing up any mistakes celebs make and then their names get dragged through the mud. They are just people like us and everyone makes mistakes from time to time. But unfortunately it is something that comes with being famous.

We are all not perfect and people must not judge us by the place were the media puts us. There is two things that the media can do world wide. they will make you or break you.

We are all human and we all make mistakes, it is learning from your mistakes that sets one apart. If you carry on, then that would be to your own detriment and then yes, be judged And just because you are famous or whatever and in the public eye, does not mean that you are perfect and a role model

Most people place celebrities and sport stars on a pedestal and expect them not to make mistakes because of this, one needs to remember that they are all still human and will make mistakes. I do understand that they are role models for many people and especially children and one does expect them to conduct themselves in a certain manner but you cannot expect anyone to be absolutely perfect all of the time. People and young people especially aspire to be like their sport heroes or their favourite actor etc but really, they are not any kind of perfect or different from you or I. I also read recently that Dan Carter was too caught driving under the influence and he lost his sponsorship from Land Rover as a result as they couldn't have that kind of negative publicity associated with them. The point really is that they are not above the law or any more perfect than any regular person and they will certainly make mistakes, maybe perhaps even more than once.

I do agree with your comments in that sports stars should not be mistaken for role models but they do live within the public eye and are to bear in mind that theyare looked up to by many - inclusive of the youth. Yes, they are not perfect but their public behaviour cannot be without scrutiny. Media often do take things out of context which may lend itself to absurdities but public figures should always be cognisant of the effects of their actions.

All over the world people have their shortcomings. They are not at all untouchable. They are going to let others down or make mistakes but after everything they are still human.
