Almost impossible to lose weight

One of the recent editions of Time magazine had a cover article that basically said it is almost impossible to lose weight.  Essentially, most people who win all these weight loss competitions almost all get back to their original weight within a few years and some of them even end up weighing more.  They were trying to isolate what it is that leads to some people managing to successfully lose weight and others not.  So far the evidence seems to be very unclear.  Nobody seems to have any idea what works, other than it appears to be that different types of diets work for different people and what works for some people does not work for others.  Some of the basics obviously include exercise, which is largely in the form of walking and the restriction of the diet, but whether that restriction relates to just eating proteins or what it is, seems to differ from one person to the next.  I have been fighting very hard this year to lose weight and I’ve had fairly dramatic results, but for me it always gets down to severely reducing what I eat at the same time as increasing dramatically how many steps I take a day.  The truth is, it is extremely hard work and it seems the older you get the harder it is.  Basically, what the article really reveals is that you have to try and prevent yourself from putting on weight in the first place because once you have put it on your body seems to do its very best to fight you to stay at that level!

The hardest part of losing weight is to keep that weight and you will have to eat healthy for the rest of your life if you do not want to pick up weigh again. The best way to loose weigh is a healthy diet and exercise.

Dieting is not an easy task! I think that eating healthy is the best way to avoid dieting in general. I also believe that eating everything in moderation is key. This alone is difficult and I have definitely not mastered the skill as yet.

Being in the very good shape it is being very good disciplined in exercising and having correct diet. It is sounds impossible! Does not work if all of these only for the period of time, I think it must the life style to follow! And yes when we do get older it is more difficult to lose what we found before............

I was listening to the radio and the expert who was talking on the radio said that people who are constantly on a diet, end up suffering from a mental disorder.

The best weight loss results and stories I've heard have been by people following a banting diet, with exercise of course. One cannot expect to lose weight if you consume more calories that what you use up during that day and ones mindset has to be right.

I must agree that losing weight is not a quick fix, for everyone to see a difference it will take about 3 months. it Is definitely a lifestyle change, everyday counts. I always find myself crashing on my diet when I starve myself or depending on the emotional state that I am in.

Losing weight is not about a quick fix. It has to be a change in lifestyle. It takes hard work and dedication and is most definitely a possibility. You just have to want to lose weight.

Losing weight is dedication and strong will power which a lot of people do not have. The reason why it feels impossible is because you make it impossible to keep up with. If I want to lose weight, I will not deprive myself from things I enjoy, I will just have it in moderation. I have read an article that has said that you shouldn't cut out any food groups, you should just eat it in moderation and obviously exercise is the main key to sustaining your weight.

You have to make a lifestyle change and not just a temporary change for losing weight. Most people gain even more weight when they stop exercising. It takes hard work and dedication to loose weight and to keep it stable.

I think it is not an easy task for someone who wants to lose weight and think losing weight needs hard work and commitment. I think it would be a good idea to try and prevent putting on overweight at all.

Yes, i agree that it is better to avoid putting on the weight in the first place as it seems to take longer and longer to lose it as you get older.

The difficult thing is actually sticking to a healthy lifestyle. As with many things in life, moderation regarding what you eat is very important. I don't think it is necessary to deprive yourself completely but one should nine times out of ten opt for healthier choices when it comes to your diet. Exercise also does not need to be limited to the gym, there are so many outdoor activities, such as hiking and cycling that can assist in weight loss and that offer a more scenic route in the journey toward your desired weight.

The tricky part is to keep the weight down that you have lost. I definitely agree with the comments below. Every blood group should follow a certain diet and exercise is very important. Your mind set should be right and it’s definitely a lifestyle, you cannot be on a diet for just a period of time. I think society also create a certain image for people how to look these days. But as long as you are healthy, just be happy with the way you are. The world would sure be a boring place if everyone looked the same.

I definitely agree with you losing weight is difficult, not only to lose the weight but to keep it off . It has to be a lifestyle, you have to want to do it. I find it very hard to stick to a specific diet so I will rather just try to eat healthy in general. Just keep to the basics and you will already see a difference, as soon as you see your progress it will motivate you to keep going.

I agree, losing weight is not the easiest thing to do. You have to discipline yourself and not just go on diets exercise is also a must. You can't expect to lose weight fast and then stay that way after you "finished" your diet. Since I was little my mom use to say how dangerous diets can be to your body. While dieting sure you going to lose weight but if you stop and eat a burger you'll gain it again. I guess discipline is the main issue in my life, sometimes I just love food way too much :)

I agree to lose weight is really difficult, but if your mind set is right nothing is impossible. Just eat healthy and exercise a lot.

It definitely is more than just your exercise, you really have to take care with what you are eating. Eating is the most difficult thing to change. I am fine with eating greens but when it comes to eating plain chicken every day I definitely struggle. Its horrible. Don't we all just wish that we could be the kind of fat we thought we were way back but realize you actually weren't fat? I think one should start by trying to substituting your weaknesses for the healthier option - i.e. chocolate, opt for dark chocolate instead. Another big difference in losing weight is cutting out sugar. I think if I ever lose the weight that I want to, that I will learn a big lesson and not allow myself to let go again. It gets depressing not losing weight.

You definitely cant just go on a diet for a short period of time, it is a lifestyle choice that you have to live by. I personally feel like depriving yourself from the things you crave will leave you binge eating. I feel if you eat things in moderation, burn more calories than you eat, and choose your food wisely it will make a difference.

The problem with losing weight is not about going on a diet, it is about a complete lifestyle change and I often find it difficult to alter my eating indefinitely. Most people look for a quick fix and I do not believe that there is any such thing, it's hard work, discipline and determination constantly. My mom joined weigh-less in Matric and hasn't for a day stopped eating according to the portions and guidelines of weigh-less and she manages to constantly be maintaining or losing weight. I just find it extremely difficult to imagine never eating something that you want or any "happy food" at all.

Honestly, in the last 4 years I have really let myself go, and getting back to where I want to be is tough but it really is mainly about what you eat. I still think that there are certain food groups you just can't cut out completely. Losing weight has also got a lot to do with portion control. I have been told what types of foods you need and how many portions of each you should have in a day and for me it's been working. This still allows me to have carbs - which I wouldn't be able to live without. Slowly but surely I am losing the weight and even though it is working slowly, it will stay off longer which is much better in my opinion.

The problem people have when they do these drastic diets cutting out carbs and sugars and sure enough lose 10kms in 2 weeks, is that they will pick everything right back up after touching a potato. No not eating it, touching it... Lol.

It really is 80% diet and 20% exercise but it is also a lifestyle that you need to commit to.

There is something I also strongly believe and that is actually not to look at the scale. If you are gyming, you will gain muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat does. Soooooo when you look at the scale and you've picked up 1.2kms for example, you freak out but in actual fact you could have just gained muscle. So a goal weight can sometimes be unrealistic.

At the end of the day, it is about how you look and how you feel!! So just do what works for you :)

Loosing weight is a life style change, you can't just go on a diet and lose weight then go back to eating normal and not expecting to gain the weight again. Lots of exercises

Ya that is why I do not diet because you will get it all back plus more once you touch that burger LOL. So I would rather just enjoy the food and be happy.

I do think that a 'standard' diet cannot work for everyone - one needs to have their blood tested to see how they may react to certain foods! Of course exercise is a key component but I do feel that a dietician is to reccomend what works for you!

It’s all about really wanting to lose weight you need to be determent and in the right mind set
80% what you eat and 20 % excises
My daily eating plan consist of 5 meals a day, Low Carb and High protein and then the third day of every week High Carb Day
Meaning I only eat lean meats and also no starch no diary and a lot of greens
Going to the Gym 4 to 5 times a week and doing high-intensity interval training type of training that keeps your heart rate up
Also Weight training is important most people have this thing in their heads that if you do weights you will bulk and look like Hulk and this is not true at all
Important thing is to make sure you do not Burn Muscle after training I always drink a Whey protein to feed my muscles
Anyone can lose weight if you are really dedicated and willing to prep your meals every day and go to the Gym religiously
My mom lost 39kg and 153 cm just by doing this
People must realise it’s not a diet it’s a lifestyle

There is a book called Eat right for your type. I think its quiet useful when coming to dieting tips. Basically it concentrates on your blood group what you should and shouldn't eat. Certain things are not good for certain blood groups so to me makes sense. I'm not a person that diets but have been eating according to what my blood group needs and agree with the books concept as I have lost weight but just eating right.
