Boeing to retire the 747

The 747 was the first plane to be known as a “Jumbo Jet”, but Boeing has decided its days are over.  Apparently, because it uses four engines it is much more expensive to operate than most of the twin jet aeroplanes that are used these days and there is very little interest in the plane anymore, with most airlines retiring their 747’s.

Boeing’s new plane, which they expect to be far more popular, is the 777X.  This will seat between 350 to 425 passengers and is set to debut in 2020.   It has the largest jet engines ever developed by the aerospace industry and 7 different airlines have ordered 340 of the planes.  The big selling point of this plane is that it is the most fuel efficient plane ever, using about 12% less fuel per seat on the plane than any other competing plane according to Boeing.  It is also going to be wider than the current planes in use and will be able to take passengers more easily on long haul flights.  I am still waiting for technology to improve a little bit more, so that long international flights reduce in duration – in other words, take less time!

I have heard many people complain that space is an issue on planes. I am sure that airlines have taken the public’s complaints seriously and as a result going to purchase this new plane. This also means that they could assist more passengers which people will find helpful, especially during holiday season.

Well I’m all for a Bigger plane, just hope they make it more comfortable for the passengers (meaning Leg space) and not just bigger to cramp more people in
It’s horrible to fly long distance with someone breathing down your neck

Shoo for me the more passengers, the more weight, the more stress but that's just my phobia talking. lol I can imagine that they would try think of how to reduce fuel on planes because its just crazy how much a plane takes. I'm sure the airfares always cover the costs regardless.

This is a great development for the airlines purchasing these new planes as it will mean a lot more passengers per flight and less fuel consumption. Hopefully it will not result in more passengers being cramped into an even smaller space than usual.

I assume I enjoy flights just because the last time I was on a plane i was 3 years old and could fall asleep on the seats comfortably and had no clue of what was actually happening. I feel like i would be a bit scared now after all the movies I've seen especially knowing that the plane is bigger than usual and carrying a much heavier weight.

777X plane sounds like it is going to be a very big plane carrying lots of passenger seats and less expenses, It sounds like Boeing will make lot more profit with 777X

It's going to be a huge plane. To fly so many people is a big responsibility but with today’s technology I'm sure it's very safe and greater than the older airplanes.

Technology is improving every day I won't be surprised one day to here that they have reduce duration and also there is high competition to the industries they also need to develops new think all the time.

As long as the aircraft is safe, I don't care the size nor the speed, in fact, the travelling is part of the journey which makes for exciting times - I say this because I have only ever flown for pleasure. I suppose business people would want faster planes. But for me, as I said before, the travel is part of the holiday/fun.

It's amazing to think how far technology has developed. I think everyone would agree in saying that they hate long flights and cutting the duration in half would be a blessing. I've only been on a plane a couple of times domestically but I just hate the feeling of being so out of control. I would rather drive that fly!

Hopefully these new planes will also be more environmentally friendly with the reduced fuel usage. I love flying but if you are above average height the leg space can be cramped and uncomfortable. Let’s hope that accommodating more people doesn’t mean even less leg room.

Wow that is really impressive. I only wonder whether the increased width will allow the economy passengers a bit more breathing space or if it will just mean an increase of economy passengers on the flight.

I have never been on a 747 or boeing. I have only flown locally. I think it would be quite an awesome experience to travel overseas in a boeing. I sure hope the technology improves so much that flight duration reduces, I am not so sure if I will be able to sit in such a close confine space for more than 5 hours at a time... Only experience will tell.

I don't like to fly at all so the less time a flight can take the better. I think its good that the Boeing will use less fuel. Flight tickets should just get cheaper also.

I am not a massive fan of flying and limiting the duration of a flight would be amazing, if it was ever possible. I have only ever flown locally and haven't yet had the opportunity of travelling overseas, I am however extremely keen on visiting a few countries. Imagine if the duration of flights were ever to be shorter, the cost of a ticket....

Quatar airline currently holds record for the longest long haul flight flying from Doha to Auckland , flight time being 17 hours and 30 minutes. The A380 airbus double decker has taken the lead in the airline industry in being a sufficient and more comfortable flight for passengers, carrying a range of 538 up to 853 passengers. Emirates ailrline even offers social lounge for business class customers.

I recently flew with Qatar and must say that the entertainment and the service on the plane makes a massive difference especially on long flights. I hate flying long distances. I surely wouldn't mind if I was in Business class.

I do not know about the duration decreasing to be honest, but if that could be done, that would be awesome. Not a huge fan of flying to be honest. To hold such a capacity, that is quite something

I was on a Plane when I was very small so to me I feel that I have never been on a Plane, I want to take my son on one but I when he is older. I like big planes I cant see why its boring what does one want to do on a plane??

Wow 777 sounds hectic! Very impressive bigger plane less fuel. I completely agree with reducing duration. My little one would never sit through a flight so guess I will travel close by on a ship for now so she can run around still ;-D

Yes, I remember flying Boeing 747, those kind of planes usually flying long distance, i would say they are more comfortable then the small planes, they are landing with not so much nose and to get through the turbulence is easier. If the new generation of planes can bring the prices of the air fares down and make trips not so long - I mean long distance trips, then it will be good change

The aero space development is astounding - I recently flew in a 'double story' plane with a bar. It was fantastic! I am sure it will take a while before South Africa sees the 777x with SAA in disrepute and our airlines being excessively expensive as it is!

I dont know much about airplanes, the only way i can see flights reducing duration time is making smaller planes and less passengers in it or less they build this wonderful engines for planes. Lets what happens with the technology increase so much lately
