Moving and setting up new computers

I was reminded recently of two of my pet peeves, namely moving and setting up new computers.  I recently got myself a new computer, which is more suitable for some of the photographs and video editing that I work on, because my last computer was not strong enough to process even short family videos.  It is not just plugging in the new computer and setting it up – it is the fact that suddenly you don’t actually have Microsoft Word, you don’t have Outlook, etc and all of them have to first be downloaded and when you are finished downloading them, then they need to be set up.  Just going on to another computer and eventually working out all the settings on my e-mail account and setting that up took 30 minutes alone.  Then I had to download the rest of the Microsoft package and the Adobe programmes that I use, including Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

When you leave all of that aside, every time you go onto any website, you now have to enter in all your passwords again and set your computer to remember some of those sites and so all in all it is a mountain of work to do.  I have resolved not to upgrade or change a computer for at least another 3 or 4 years – maybe 5 – until I have forgotten about how painful it has been this time!

That's one thing I enjoy about upgrading with an iPhone. You don't need to deal with the frustrations of downloading any apps or starting over.

Setting up new devices is always a mission and sometimes complicated for those who are not very tech savvy. It takes a lot of time to set up along with the mission of understanding and operating a new PC.

They should have a back up system like phones when you put an account in and it basically reloads all apps/programs that you previously had, That would make it so much easier. I know the struggle I had to reload my machine to.

Setting up a new computer is time consuming, i am sure though that you can ask the company you are buying it from to do it for you. also i am sure that you can transfer your passwords for your browser. but yes aah remember the good old days when you received your new pc and everything was already pre loaded. i think the reason they are doing it this way is there are so many cyber pirates stealing programs

Moving is the worst thing ever . To set up your computes it actually takes up a lot of your time you have to do it step by step.

Moving in general is a mission. Computers, I will rather leave that for someone who knows what they are doing.

Suppose it comes with moving, which is painful enough as it is. Computers irritate me, however are necessary in this world as not much can be done without one

I am in total agreement with your thinking. It is very hard work changing or setting up electronic devices like a new PC. The other consideration is that just like a car, you become attached to these devices and when you upgrade, besides elation and lots of work as mentioned in your blog, your heart breaks a little.
We all would gladly embrace change if it was not so cumbersome and sometimes heartbreaking!!!!

Moving is the worst thing ever to do. I don't have a PC at home but I must say that when Justin has to change something on my PC at work, I feel like he has changed my whole environment, lol. Having to get used to new things is a hassle and frustrating too. But we eventually get used to it anyway.

Most people hate change and don't deal with change well at all, then there are people who embrace and love change, I wish I had more of the latter characteristic. Like anything new you have to now start from scratch to get to know it and the first while is always frustrating

I have to agree I don't like this either, luckily I don't have a computer at home that I need to use. I do everything on my phone. But moving for me is THEE WORST THING EVER! I can't stand it.

Moving in general is such a hassle , but in the end it will all be worth it. You just need lots of patience.

I absolutely hate moving! especially when it comes to unpacking clothes and the small things. I have only ever had a laptop so there hasn't been much set up regarding it but i can imagine the missions of having to set everything up.

I agree, i hate changing phones, laptops PC's etc. It is such an irritation when you have to move everything from one devise on to the other. Then you have to learn how the new device works etc. It actually takes up a lot of your time, especially if you don't have any to waste.

It is very much the same as when you get a new phone. Always a process of saving everything from your old phone and learning how to use your new phone. Certain of the Apps you use will also need to be downloaded again etc.

I feel lucky to have a husband who knows something about PC's and IT. Without him I will be lost. I feel like a laptop is so much better and handy as you can take it anywhere so I prefer using my laptop. Although my husband also prefers a PC.

This is my least favourite thing to do, moving and having to reconnect PC's, it is an absolute headache and mission! We recently moved and I managed to convince my mother to donate our desktop PC to an organisation and we then only work on laptops and tablets - success! The greatest relief was setting up absolutely everything apart from a desktop PC! The agony of connecting cables is unexplainable and now for me, a thing of the past!

To move over all is just a pain in the neck. There is always something that gets damage and for the first few days, when you are looking for something you struggle to find it. I can just think to set up a new computer and to wait for the basic stuff to download again, is just as frustrating. Especially when you need to use it on a daily basis.

I know it’s a big job to set up a computer and even a bigger job if you don’t know what you’re doing.
It’s always better to get someone that knows what they are doing before you blow something up.

The feminist inside me will hate me for this, but, I get the closest IT man / friend / person available to do the set up. What else can a girl ask for?

It is a hassle sometimes to setup a new computer, but it will be worthwhile in the end

I really do hate these passwords they make us create for everything. And the backup questions if you forget the password. I mean, I won't remember my favourite holiday destination from 10 years ago?? It could have been anywhere! So I completely understand your frustration...
Laptops are much better for convenience-sake, however it is much easier to work off a PC. Especially when working with art programs.

I agree it can be a pain but I think in the end the pain is well worth it if it's up and running and better than the previous PC. As for moving, I am one of those people who loves changes and love moving packing and unpacking.

Downloading and resting your PC is nothing compare to when you forgot your username or password is painful to reset new password in.

Natasha   said:

It sounds like a mission and then you forget the password or you cant remember your username then you have to reset everything and that also take some time.

We recently moved our office and that in itself was a massive project. My boyfriend works in IT and I am very fortunate as I am not at all comfortable with moving and setting up new pc's or anything technological for that matter.

nina  said:

I agree that it is a painful process. I'm not very hands on when it comes to technology. I'm usually able to figure it out after some time, but it is usually a frustrating process. I'd rather leave it for the IT guys.

Jessica Apfel   said:

It does seem like a mission and a half, however, it reassures us that access to outsiders is retricted. If it is so difficult for the person holding the password to reactive your computer - it gives one peace of mind knowing that without a password your computer is for the most part 'secure'. I hope that you do not have to repeat the process for a while to come.

I hate it when you have to move around and then you have to move your PC all the cords and all the equipment it makes you so tired and then also I hate the view of the cables. I like Lap tops more they better for Traveling and helpful, I used my laptop the whole weekend at the Hospital with my Son so he could watch Movies off of it. Could you imagine if I needed to bring my whole PC.

it's always a pain to set up a new PC, but once it's up and running, it's a pleasure.
