Continuing education and studying

I recently went on a two full day Photoshop course.  I have been planning to do so for a long time, although actually I wanted to go on an Adobe Premiere Pro course for video editing.  The Adobe Premiere Pro course was not available and I thought that instead of forever trying to fiddle around with books and save the money a course costs, I should try the course instead.  I was quite apprehensive about it, thinking that I would endure some poor quality lecturing or some Mickey Mouse training college, etc.  I was very relieved to discover that the course was in fact excellently taught by a man who clearly knows Photoshop better than most Priests know the Bible, and has extensively lectured on the topic, and is also the author of a published book on Photoshop and Lightroom.

It has certainly given me the green light to start going on more courses again because, although at times I felt really mentally drained, I realised that I am just somebody who loves being a student.  In other words, I love learning from people who know more than me on a variety of subjects.  There is no quicker way to expand your knowledge and to have the benefit of somebody who knows more than you to teach or lecture you and there are so many areas in which all of us, unless you are a “know-it-all”, can learn.

It does not mean you have to pay the person to learn something from them.  It might well be that you know somebody who is good in a particular field or particular type of thing and who is effectively mentoring you for free with advice anyway.  I am sure that I will forget many of the things I have learned, despite the notes I took, but I certainly plan to take more courses going forward – and not just in computer software. For example, I would love to go on a cooking course for example just to try that – not learning how to cook everything, but maybe just one or two meals.  To be able to cook them superbly and make the sauces yourself as opposed to buying them is a skill and it is something I wish I had learnt when I was younger.

What I did realise, while sitting in class for two days, is that when you work on things that you understand and know, you don’t strain your brain that much.  Some of you who for example study a second language in your spare time will know how good that is for the brain - and I have not been doing anything like that for years.  I would literally stagger away from the lectures, feeling almost like a moron who could not remember anything.  Things I could do in class that seemed so simple I could not repeat at home an hour later on Photoshop, although after the second day I was a lot better.  The lessons I learnt in that regard could be a host of blog topics including: to keep your brain working you need to stretch your brain and not just read things that interest you all the time; taking your own notes, even if you are supplied with notes, will always make it easier for you to remember things, keep you more focused and sharp.  Another thing that interests me, and maybe it is something I will explore in another blog later, was that there was a 42 year old man on the course with me who is a web developer and he told me that he takes half a pill of Ritalin each day and then he focuses much better!

I think continuing education and studying it's a good thing to do learning what you want to now.

Something I have always wanted to is to go into photography. I'm thinking of going to study part time from next year, as it is really interesting and nice to have next to you name and it is always useful to have if someone needs a nice album or something quick you will have the knowledge.

You don't always have to master everything, but it is always exciting to learn something new.

You are never too old and it is never too late to do anything! I would love to do short courses to keep my brain active... It's just really expensive and you have to be extremely disciplined...

Its never to late to learn new things, and expand your knowledge on things. especially if you see you have a passion for it , or that you are naturally gifted. I have so many new art projects at home, problem is trying to find the time to finish them, one is mosaic art, other is oil and acrylic painting, also ceramic art...

I think its important to keep learning and challenging yourself. My mom is quite elderly and every month I buy her a new book on cross words etc just to keep that brain going

It is always good to keep the brain stimulated by learning and doing new things. I would definitely do short courses that would contribute to my career in future.

Learning and acquiring new skills helps keep the brain active. It is so important not to get comfortable and to always push yourself to learn more, not only academically but learning and studying things that are outside of your comfort zone, like taking a cooking class or learning a new language or even a new form of exercise!

I also like to learn new things, I must say being a parent too also teaches you every single day. I would learn all day everyday if I had the time.

I am really considering studying now. I don't know why but as I get older, the desire to learn more is very strong.

It is never too late to start studying or learning something new. With regards to a cooking course there is a great way you can change up date nights or birthday dinners - You go learn how to make a 3/4 course meal and then once you have been taught and done the cooking you get to enjoy your meal at the end of the night. I must say it is better than just going out for dinner when you can have dinner and learn a new skill - cooking. When I had free time I went on a sewing course to make clothing and it was fun. I learnt a lot. I wish I had more time to learn new skills - not to excel or be a pro in it but just to expand and learn new things.

You can never know enough, education is something no one can ever take away from you. I would love to do a cooking course, I will be married soon and I’m the worst cook ever.

Life-long learning is definitely something that everyone should be passionate about. Not only does it keep you from seeming uninformed in conversation with others, but it also ensures that you are constantly developing your brain and keeping yourself busy. It also helps that we are in a profession where it is imperative to keep learning in order to stay up to date.

There is nothing that hurts like getting poor quality of lecturing while you are expecting good education or training

I am a strong believer in continuous personal development. Knowledge is power and the more you learn about a variety of subjects, the more equipped you are. The short courses albeit not in your current line of business are the best way to stayed tuned into other subject matters that affect our world. And who knows; they could probably assist you one day in your current line of business.

There will always be something you do not know. While studying I think everyone has different techniques that work for them. I always believed if you fully concentrate in class it’s not necessary to study that hard for a test etc. your own notes will be more helpful than someone else`s. .

It always fascinates me to listen to a person that has knowledge about something I don't know much about. I like to learn new things and to go try them out. It keeps me busy. I will love to go on a course just to learn the basics of photography. Photos are so important and I think we will still use it for a long time.

I feel like you never stop learning new things in our profession. There's so many different paths in law you can take like becoming a notary or a conveyancer. The opportunities are endless and therefor I feel it's a great field to study.

I agree always expand your mind, join a course rather than just sit and let your mind rot. There will always be a course to suit your interests. You just need to look out for one and allow your self to learn.

I make it a yearly goal to do a course each and every year and I have managed to keep to the goal so far. Every time I complete a course I am always proud but its not to say I sometimes have to really push myself not to give up. Luckily I have chosen to work in a profession that is ever evolving and one needs to continuously learn new things to keep up.

Not sure if I can condone the Ritalin use - but each to their own! I would encourage anybody to study further, irrespective of your age and circumstances. The human mind must be constantly challenged - a bored mind is the Devil's playground! We should always want to better ourselves in every aspect. Taking your own notes are always much better - I never relied on another's study notes and it certainly paid off.

I enjoy going to class than studying just from books. I did try home schooling , it was was not for me. The interaction between student and teacher is important, especially when you get struck on a problem then you can ask there and then.

I wholly believe in exercising the brain. It is a muscle and will become useless if not used on a regular basis. I am planning on studying further as I really enjoy learning new things and expanding my knowledge. Your memory in a sense becoes better and one just feels good

I have to say that doing something you love and getting more advance in that field going for the courses example does make one very interested in the subject and it's like you are more keen to focus and absorb every piece of information. We are never to young or old to learn something new, I myself would love to go on a course and maybe soon I will, I'm in the mood for learning new stuff.

I have always loved attending classes rather than just studying out of a book. I enjoy the interaction between students and lecturers. I must say, I don't like studying via correspondence only because I need to ask questions and get answers there-and-then and not wait for someone to call back. I did a Paralegal course and a Bookkeeping course both through weekend and night lectures and did not mind giving up my time because I was gaining knowledge. I have always loved sitting in a lecture room. There are so many courses out there, just such a pity that so many of them are out of our financial reach :-(

I think short courses are awesome. You get to learn a new skill, or further your skills in a variety of different subjects. I definitely think one should try and invest in doing one every year. A baking course is next on my list.

I don't think you can ever learn too much. I think it is great to learn things on different topics and to build up a good general knowledege. This way you will always be able to take part in different conversations. In my case, I would love attending medical negligence seminars/courses so that I can keep on learning more about the field I work in.

I would love to do courses the other day I actually looked at a baking course it looked like so much fun I just want to do it. There is so many courses out there and some of them looks so much fun. Ritalin works very well I used be on it for long it really works very well.

I would love to do some courses to improve myself, there are a lot of Courses to go to, that can help you in your day to day business. I went to a course that teaches you how to deal with unhappy clients and telephone skills, this actually gave me a good perspective on how to deal with rude and bossy people. However I still boil when I get screamed at.

I would be keen on attending courses to further your education on something that you are interested in, I just think that it can be quite an adjustment having not been in classes since school. I recently was exploring the course, WIP which is run for women and teaches important safety tips and a certain degree of self-defense.
