I don’t believe that the media is responsible for as much fake news as certain politicians who are in trouble generally claim, although I do think journalistic standards, particularly in South Africa, are not what they were 20 or 30 years ago. I have written about that too many times to repeat the whole argument here again, but in many instances all that newspapers do is to just reprint press releases that are sent to them.
What I am talking about though is another aspect and that is the general dumbing down of the media. I understand it in terms of they have businesses to run and sadly, most people these days don’t want to hear intellectual news. They want to hear about hurricanes, tropical downpours of rain, people navigating the streets in a boat and about the 20 people who have died, all the while ignoring the 40 people who have died on the roads in South Africa that day. It is all about sensation. It is all about creating an impression that when a 92% eclipse passes over your head that the sky will at least go gloomy or dark whereas, unless you are in the part of totality, you basically don’t get any darkness at all, although there is a tremendous reduction in the temperature.
Its all about hyping up a boxing match between one man who is not a boxer and another man who was an absolute champion. At the end of the day, and as I predicted to all my staff, McGregor stood no chance. Sure, Mayweather fought his normal fight and cautiously saw what his opponent had to offer, during which time his opponent looked fairly decent, before he clinically dismantled him. Let’s not forget this was a 40-year-old man who retired two years ago, against a 29 year old man in his absolute peak and despite that massive difference in the young man’s favour, experience still won. That is because it was his field and that is another reason why we always make the point that you don’t have the expertise to do your own plastic surgery and you don’t have the expertise to do your own Road Accident Fund case. I thought from the start that McGregor had no chance, despite his massive youth advantage and despite the fact that his opponent was coming out of retirement, because he was getting into a field that is not his.
The point being though, the media managed to hype this up into one of the greatest events of the world – such that it drowned out any news of any other significance around the world that day. Two already wealthy men became insanely wealthy and quite honestly I think we all took part in a major con. The eclipse today, the fight tomorrow and whatever else is cooked up for next week – it is all just, to be honest, trivial nonsense dressed up as actual news when it is nothing of the sort. The real news like high unemployment continues, people get killed in crime everyday, people die and are maimed on the roads and we distract ourselves from all of it and perhaps we do really want it to distract us. It is now all about the dumbing down of the media to attract a wider audience and those who are interested in serious news have to look in more specialised areas to find it.

The news/media has always fascinated me as to how they can draw you into their clutches when they want. I remember the build up to the Mayweather/McGregor fight, that was ALL on hear on any radio station and tv channel, now it is dead. This often happens, there is such a hype at a certain time and then nothing. Oscar Pistorius / Pippie Kruger / etc to name a few, flood the pages of all forms of media and then just disappear into state of nothingness. I am sure this is EXACTLY what Zupta / President Gupta is hoping will happen....

I believe that our current status quo demands for information to brief and to the point, as a result, the death of proper journalism is due. People no longer have "the time" the read an educated, well-informed article. People crave, quick, short spouts of information to grasp the just of a situation.

Sensation sells bottom line. Most are not at all interested in the real news, the reality of the county and world we live in. Perhaps it is too raw and upsetting or perhaps it the general state of apathy that is becoming all too prominent.

I think we are so tired of hearing about all the crime and corruption and deaths that anything else hypes us up.

I must say that since I have been with my boyfriend, I have watched more news than anything else actually. It actually makes me so sad to see what our world is going through. However a lot of pages now like making fake news which irritates me as there are real problems to be dealt with and giving fake news should be banned or given a prison time.

I like listening to news, I know a lot of people who refuse to listen to the news as it is way too negative but I like knowing what’s going on in SA. I think one should be careful of what you believe when reading things on social media. Check if it's a reliable source first.

The times when I listen to the news it’s just nonsense. I try to not listen to the news it only upsets me. There is nothing educating about it. If it's like this now I don’t want to know how terrible it's going to be in the future.

I think the media makes sure that it keeps all the attention, be fake, bad and or unimportant news, as long as it keeps all the attention, instead of real important news.

I know I should, but I do not read the news much. Quite depressing and most of the time you are unsure of what you hear is truly correct in any event. It is all propaganda...giving you what you want to hear besides for the truth

So many unnecessary stories makes the news, for example a celebrity gets a baby and the babies name is Apple who actually cares and what benefit is it to your life ?

Its concerning that the media have to adopt this new approach. Its all about supply and demand. A simple society demands simple news. The real news scares people and I suppose it is easier to avoid it then having to face the realities.

Fake News, Good News, Bad News, people just love news and whether its good, bad or fake, the news needs to keep their viewers. Bad News is what makes people the way they are too, Negative!

How true, I am often surprised by what makes the news headlines in our country! The media is a powerful tool that can be used to draw attention to real socio-economic issues! I sometimes feel as though the wrong things are unnecessarily made into a huge fuss.

I agree they don't really tell us about all the things happening around us ,they would rather tell us something about a fight coming up or the Eclipse, I really think they should hype up the crime in our land and what is going on around us. Something happens to you and you wonder why you, but in the mean time its been happening all around us.

I an 100% sure that there is someone that is paid lots of money to make up stories and post it online so that the world can make a fuss about it even if its not real. Funny Fact is that people like bad news they like gossip and they also like seeing fights and anger displayed, if you have time to sit and read comments made by people on the News Feed you must see how they go for each other.

My opinion the best news website and app for news of importance , or If you still think its fake then use the Alberton Record , or Southern Courier.

I must be honest, I get extremely irritated when my news feed is filled with rubbish and not news that is actually important! I get very frustrated reading the same nonsense about stories that actually should be in the People magazine or some news network created for Kardashian nonsense. I actually recently heard a news bulletin at 05h30 in the morning on 947 wherein they confirmed that some celeb couple was getting divorced, a news bulletin is not the platform for rubbish and irrelevant news like that.

I believe the media do not always publish articles etc. that is completely the total truth. The problem is also people get murdered every day and accidents happen every day as well. The only time people are really interested in reading such articles are when there is a little story behind it that is different and they never heard something like it before. Sadly people get entertained on someone else’s tragedy.

It is just an easier way to spread and also make money from the momentum for a fight. But fewer people will find what's truly important breaking news or crime taking place

McGregor certainly was better than anyone expected climbing out of the hexagon into the squared circle. Coming out aggressive with power punches and seemingly confusing Mayweather with his stance switches and unorthodox style. Mayweather tucked his head and turned his back more than once which is rare for a boxing match, if it was a MMA fight he would have received official warnings for that. Personally I feel the fight was an early stoppage - fatigue is not damage or inability to cope but never-the-less I think the Mayweather-McGregor fight is already forgotten and by next week it will be way more forgotten.

One of my favourite quotes is " one could drown in irrelevance", which I think is very apt here, too often people turn a blind eye to news that actually matters and keep themselves busy with "news" regarding trivial matters, such as the relationship status of celebrities. As a result of the dumbing down of the media, the general population is sadly following suit.

I can agree with the blog post however we as the people are the ones that also hype up the fights - I don't think it means that we don't care about other news but at some point it becomes draining just reading horrific stories or what the government has led us to - it is a bit of a break to get excited for a fight or for upcoming events. It isn't news thats for sure but it is something for us to look forward to.

This is very true - too often we are blinded by insignificant rubbish. But alas, it generates the mass attention becuase people dont wont to constantly read about the dreary world we live in and the often pessimistic news. Sadly, that news is the truth and we have to be alive and well to all that happens around us!

News and Media should not be censored. when in some cases they are. Although with the technology we have today people are reporting news via their social media regarding police brutality, citizens taking justice into their own hands etc. Obviously there should still be some suspicion as it might not always be coming from a trust worthy source. and you really cant believe everything you read on social media.

It is quite sad that the news is just all about sensation these days. The media obviously thrives on the fact that the majority of the population are not interested in real news.
