Doing your own stunts can be an impossible mission

Mission:  Impossible 6 is meant to open in theatres on 27 July 2018.  It is the series based around Tom Cruise and it has certainly done very well over the years.  It is not the kind of movie I have ever taken seriously, but I tend to enjoy them and they are almost always well shot, with expensive sets in exotic locations and they are visually good to look at while relaxing.  I was surprised to read that Tom Cruise does his own stunts and in fact has now broken his ankle in a stunt for the new movie.

Timing is everything in the movie industry and so this will really put them under quite some pressure to finish filming the movie and then editing it, etc and still open on time.  In South Africa we don’t always realise that almost all of the movies, and when they are released, are based on when an American audience is most likely to watch it and obviously the big movie season is the summer holidays in June and July and ending in August.  The worst weekend of the year – in fact, the worst weekend in the movie industry in the last 17 years – was the third weekend in August this year.  You do not want your film to be released during that time and so none of the major movies would be scheduled for then or early September.  If your movie is already scheduled for release on 28 July and your star has now broken his ankle, you will have to put everything you can together, in one way or another, to make sure that you release on time, because the difference between releasing at the end of July and releasing later in August or September would literally be hundreds of millions of dollars if your movie is expected to be successful.  It also explains why you would generally find a lot more of the rubbish and small budget movies coming out in mid- to late August through to November.

Interesting to read about the timing of when a film is likely to be released or should not be. I am personally not one for a "skop, skit and donner" movie so have not seen any of these "Mission" movies, however, if they are wanting their release to be on time, they will have to get a stunt double to complete the remainder of the movie. I would imagine doing one's own stunts to be far more exciting because "to be the character, you have to become the character". I think I would want to do my own stunts if I was in the movie industry. Although, I love thrillers/super naturals so not sure what kind of stunts would be needed for this genre :-)

I am not a Tom Cruise fan, but, I must admit that I admire his ability to move. I recently watched "The Firm" and man oh man, when I saw Cruise run like Forrest Grump I knew the man was legit.

I had no idea that there was so much importance placed on the timing of the release of a movie. It makes sense that Summer time would be popular in the US with their long Summer holidays and some States being snowed under during the Winter season. Next time I'm on the hunt for a good movie I'll make sure to see which Month it was released in the US.

Tom Cruise is a good actor but I am not huge fan although one cannot argue that a lot of his movies were great hits and did really well. I have watched a documentary or two where stunt men are used and they are quite brave and daring I must say - another feather in Tom's cap.

I loved all the Impossible movies can’t wait for this one to release. I have always been interested to see how a movie is made how the stunts come together. Would love to be on a set one day.

I think that it is admirable that actors do or even attempt to do their own stunts especially action film actors. Obviously not everyone will be able to do this but it shows some dedication to the role they are playing. It is very interesting to note how a release date can have a massive effect on the box office earnings of a movie.

I prefer when actors do there own stunts. It shows how dedicated they are and have a real passion for doing what they want. A few others I know who also do there own stunts are Jackie Chan, Christian Bale, Daniel Craig, Jason Statham. These people must love what they do as they don't need others to play their role they are up for the task.

I have watched a few documentaries on actors doing their own stunts, it is really risky and the injuries are quite serious, most of the training that goes into performing all the stunts are also quite intense. Most of the time actors enjoy doing this because they feel like they can be more like the character they are playing!

Tom Cruise is a great actor and really takes pride in his job hence he would even take risks of doing his own stunts. There are some celebs that are willing to really play their part and take the risks of doing their own stunts. I read a few that have and have been hurt as a result but those are the celebs that really take interest in their parts.

It is one way to keep alive, Push yourself to do the impossible. I am not a huge fan of Tom Cruise but some of his movies are quite something. It is always a risk to do your own stunts and could go horribly wrong

Interesting blog. I knew Tom Cruise did his own stunts. I read it in an article a couple of years back.

Interesting! I never knew that movies were released during holidays. I hate going to the movies during December, I would rather watch a movie when its been on the circuit for at least 2 weeks.

I think Tom Cruise is great actor, his work is valuable and he does make movies interesting to watch. I will be exited to watch Mission: Impossible 6; probably big budget has spent on this movie and lots of interesting stunts there too.

I have never really been a fan of Tom Cruise but it is impressive that he does his own stunts. The only other actor that I know that definitely does his own stunts is Jackie Chan. I have really been searching for good movies to watch and there has been absolutely nothing. At least now i know why.

Quite interesting - I didn't think long enough to realize but explains why there have been horrible movies out. I just sometimes think to myself "I wonder what it cost to make this pathetic film". The cinema is so ridiculously priced that it takes a lot to get me to go and watch a movie. I am not particularly a fan of Tom Cruise but it is both impressive and a little careless to do your own stunts. Makes me wonder - does he get paid more to do them as they wouldn't need to pay a stunt man or does he do his own stunts because he genuinely enjoys the thrill? #Scientology ;)

Not a huge fan of Tom Cruise ,but interesting to know he does his own stunts
But i think its a little risky to do your own stunts if you are the Main actor in the movie and you get injured ,like he did now this can mean trouble for the release of the movie

I won't be queuing for tickets to this film or even going to see same in the cinema, I probably go to the cinema maybe once or twice a year and it is normally for a long-awaited horror or thriller film. I am not a fan of action films at all and it really is immaterial to me whether stunts are performed by the actors themselves or by a stunt double because it is not something that I would be watching anyway.

Mission impossible franchise is one of the few no matter how old it gets you would always enjoy watching it and also looking forward to the next release.

If that is indeed accurate, it explains a lot. It will also help in deciding which movies to watch depending, of course, on which genres you're into. I will definitely do more research on that.
Tom Cruise is one of the most annoying actors, although, he is a good actor - I can't deny that. I have therefore missed the last few installments in the Mission Impossible series.
Hopefully he heals quickly so that they can resume production. I can only imagine the cost implications involved in production due to delays like this. What can they do though? It is one of the risks when you have an actor doing his own stunts, I guess.
I wonder if Jackie Chan caused any delays with his movies due to injuries

I must say, I have never really been a fan of the mission impossible because it really sometimes gets too far fetched. But at least Tom is able to do his own stunts :-)

It seems like having an actor who wants to do is own stunts can be quite costly and stressful. I have to agree with Clare on this one, Jason Statham is hot.

I know that it's a lot of hard work to make a movie not even to talk about the money. I think it's awesome to do something like that. It always looks so much fun. Well at age 55 he is still doing very well. I enjoy to watch his movies.

I always enjoy movies where Tom Cruise is casting in. The mission impossible series are quite good as well. It is interesting to see how he gets older from the 1st one to the current movie.

I have always enjoyed the mission impossible films. I look forward to the release. I understand there are certain times around when a film should be released but I don't think all films need that. When Twilight was still a thing I would make sure I was there no matter what time of the year through rain or shine.

This is really interesting and I have learned 2 new things - that Tom Cruise is doing his own stunts and about the movie release timing. They (especially Tom) will need to give everything they have to ensure that they still make the release date. I am not really fond of action movies, but will probably be watching it at some stage with two boys in the house.

What is the significance of the third weekend in August, other than poor performance/ratings? I will not be rushing to cinemas to watch this film. Such far-fetched action movies are certainly not my forte.

I have been to see one movie at the movie theatre this year. It was Lalaland and I thought it was a massive waste of time. I hate sitting in a movie theatre with people coughing, sneezing, talking and crunching on popcorn while I try to enjoy a movie. Biggest waste of money and time for me

I love the mission impossible series, I didn't know that Tom Cruise does his own stunts. But he is very good. I cant wait for the new one to come out so exciting. The actor or actress must get back very quickly if something like that happens if they started shooting the film with that specific actor they cant change half way in the film. So the actor needs to be on the ball and get back very quickly.
