The dangers of riding a bicycle

I try to ride my bike every now and then, although generally not far.  In fact, I think the longest ride I’ve done in the last year was a 20km ride, which in bicycle terms is really not that far.  I like to get my fitness via a number of different sports – a little bit of gym, a little bit of walking, some track work on the track where I include sprints, as well as cycling.

I have always thought the cycling is a little bit dangerous, especially on some of our roads, and generally try to cycle within estates.  I read a frightening article recently again in the New York Times, which I have on my Kindle for many years, about cycling death statistics.  Apparently, it used to be children who died most often on bicycles, but these days parents are not really letting their children ride bicycles in the streets – probably for good reason – and so their death rate has gone down.  The group that now has the leading death rate from riding bicycles are males aged 45 to 50.  These statistics obviously relate to America, but I would think that they are probably even more true of South Africa where I don’t recall when I last saw a child riding a bicycle in a street, but there are certainly lots of fanatical, generally older men, riding them.

The biggest problem with a bicycle is pretty much the same problem that a motorbike has.  People do make mistakes and sometimes those mistakes are just small mistakes – a little bump here, a small collision there.  If you are both in cars, everybody walks away, but if one of you is on a motorbike (or motorcycle as some prefer) or a bicycle, then you may not be walking away at all.  I found that a tremendous pity because it has often been one of my favourite ways to see suburbs – for example riding around Houghton and sometimes you feel safer, certainly in some suburbs, riding around them than walking.  For example, I have gone on rides with my brother through Braamfontein and downtown Johannesburg on a weekend and I would certainly not walk on some of the streets that we rode on.

I think there must be specific roads or sidewalks for bicycles as they are really a danger on the roads and we as drivers must always have a look out for them but they do not travel a safe distance.

To be very honest, there's times I don't see cyclists on the road. And I think it's due to the fact that when we study for our licences, we never really learn to look out for cyclists. This needs to be focused on.
I would, too, much rather ride around my area and not go too far. It's dangerous out there...
Even though I have a bicycle, I haven't been on it in a while lol. And I used to love riding up and down my street when I was younger

Not just that it's dangerous to let your child ride in the street with their bicycle, it is also very unsafe now to do so. Your child might not come back at all or will come back but without the bicycle.
I can think that this is very much true. People in cars don't watch out for motorcycles, not to say bicycles. My dad has a motorcycle and I hate it when he goes riding, people only tend to watch out for themselves.

Despite the dangers on our road I still get to see avid cyclists riding together on weekends and one or two "very brave" cyclists in the mornings when travelling to work riding in the traffic, obviously on their way to work. I often wonder how far from work they live and whether they have been doing it for so long that they have become complacent regarding the dangerous on our roads today

I think riding a bicycle along a busy road or street is dangerous putting life in danger.

It is such a pity that people can no longer ride bicycles around, not only is it great exercise but also a good way of exploring and taking in new environments. The dangers in South Africa particularly are, however too great, not only because of a lack of regard for cyclists by road users but also because of the high crime rate and the threat of theft.

I believe that people should ride their bicycles in a safe place and our roads are not always safe! There are many closed off areas especially for cyclists and they should make use of these areas. I think it’s the safer option for all road users.

Bikes on the roads are dangerous both for the driver and the cyclist but more so for the cyclist as they don't have the added benefit, that cars do, of a vehicle body to protect them.

They have started making designated bicycle lanes which may help a bit. When I drive to visit my parents near Rustenburg there is a road which has dedicated bicycle lanes on the sides which are packed with cyclists on Sunday mornings. A local farmer caught on to the popularity of the lanes being used by the cyclists and started up a small coffee shop which is now super busy. The cyclists park their vehicles on the farm and go for a ride and on their return they eat or drink and relax.

Bikes are dangerous and bikers will ride between cars and on unsafe places, they are more dangerous to kids they can be killed or stolen

Personally I’m not a fan of riding bicycle as I had a very bad accident when I was smaller
I think also the way some cyclist think the road belongs to them and that everyone should just watch out for them is ridiculous
Same with motorbikes

Me and my family went to a camping sight a couple of years back called Dube. There were so many cyclists there it was madness. It's a nature reserve where cyclist can cycle through the entire nature reserve and see all the animals. I would recommend anyone who loves cycling rather do that as it is safer.

I am sure cyclists these days are of the opinion that they own the roads, looking at the way they cycle and where they cycle especially in Cape Town. In certain areas in Cape Town they have their own lanes on the pavement, their own stops signs etc, it is definitely a bonus to them when it comes to safety, but then again its not everywhere. They should implement this more, especially in busier suburban areas, around schools, Universities etc.

I used to love riding bicycles as a kid. If I had to ride bicycles now, I would prefer to go in a large group and not be competitive and do it at my own pace. Mountain Cycling would be a better choice I think.

I stay in a small town where a lot of people still use bicycles including our domestic worker. There are a lot of children that drive in our area but its not as busy as Johannesburg. The way they control traffic is more speed bumps/traffic circles and stop signs. Their are not many accidents as people don't have opportunity to really speed there. Speed is the killer in my opinion. I haven't rode a bicycle in years to be honest.

It is quite fascinating to even ride through your local town as what you would walk or drive. Somehow you rediscover the beauties that you often overlook.

I enjoy cycling with a mountain bike, you are not cycling near towns. You get to cycle on dirt roads with nature and view is great on top of a cliff or peak.

I think to love cycling is actually a bonus, to have fun while exercising. It’s very sad to hear about bicycle accidents. But just over the weekend again I witness people driving in the middle of the road between all the cars and sometimes they won’t even stop at a stop sign, cross road or robot. So that just makes you think. Having to ride a bicycle was always so fun. I can’t imagine myself on one now.

It's very dangerous. I've heard too many stories about people that got badly injured because of a motorcycle or bicycle it's a high risk these days. I will rather cycle than jog, I just love it. Some of my family members did the 94.7 last year and they had a blast. I hope one day I will have enough time to train for such an big event.

I use to love riding my pink little bike, which was last ridden years ago. I have considered many time cycling places as it is a great form of exercise for your legs etc. But unfortunately I wouldn't feel safe doing so. I see many cyclists attempting to ride in a straight line but end up veering into traffic. Also i feel as though to be safe cyclists should cycle ride against traffic so that they can take note of the vehicles coming ahead of them instead of not being aware of the cars behind them.

There is a lot of danger in riding a bicycle because people on the road don't always look out for you especially the taxi's. People on bicycle's are also reckless when they don't obey the rules of the road, so when they get bumped by a car or what ever the case may be, then I don't have any sympathy for them.

I am 47 years old and I still love riding bicycles. I do miss the days, early 2000's, when my daughter and I used to ride on a weekly basis to the library and take out a book for the week. The area we lived in at the time, Brackendowns, always had beautiful lawns and gardens which we used to admire on our trips. We always felt safe and those are memories that we still cherish. I am lucky enough to be able to ride in my area as well, I must just get a bicycle again as mine was sadly stolen. My daughter and I were actually talking about getting a bicycle and entering the 94.7 challenge next year, so that is my present to myself this Christmas, a bicycle.

I enjoy cycling, but i prefer mountainbiking rather than cycling on the road. Although you can also get hurt very badly while cycling off road, I think it is a lot safer than taking your chances with taxis.

When I was younger all I did was ride my bike through my suburb and it was just so much fun. My siblings and I would pack a bag with all sorts of items and picnic food and ride our bikes to the Emmerentia dam or the Linden pool to swim with all our friends. I cannot imagine that my children would one day be able to do the same - it is just not safe - in terms of both cars around as well as thugs roaming around. I considered investing in a bike but I don't think I would use it as often as I would like for more than one reason.

My pet peeve is when I see people riding bicycles without helmets. It's just not acceptable. Similarly I don't appreciate motorcyclists or cyclists taking unnecessary risks by weaving in between cars. Keep to the left hand side of the road so that drivers know where to see you and expect you!

the Anc led gov in Gauteng tried to encourage this mode of transport by creating lanes but with taxis which do as they wish it is dangerous even in Suburbs.

In this country ,even on a bike I still wouldn't go through a dodgy area. I live in a golf estate and there are always groups at any stage of the day riding around. I think its a great way to get some exercise and have fun at the same time and they generally look very pleased with themselves. I am in two minds about cyclist on the roads. There are those who are always up to nonsense and putting themselves in danger who ruin it for everybody. However, they do have just as much right to be there as drivers.

My opinion is the cyclists that ride In a breast deserve to be hit , cause they should be driving in a straight line . but no matter what if a car hits a cyclist its always the drivers fault.

t is quite dangerous, and the death toll with regard to cyclists is to an extent as it is with just your normal MVA's - would be nice if they made more lanes for said users, however know the way vehicles are driven here, they would most likelty use same

I am an avid cyclist and there are certainly ways in which to avoid any calamity. The first of which would be to ride in a pellaton, the next would be stay away from renoundly busy roads - we confine our rides to the Cradle and Suikerbosrand. Race day - all the major intersections are patrolled which makes riding a breeze! We should not be discouraged in participating in this amazing sport. The ride through Braamfontein happens the last Friday of every month and is called 'Critical Mass'. It is a vibrant outing and really opens your eyes to the JHB we may not see during the day! Beginners, experienced riders, all are encouraged to participate in 'Critical Mass'!

Our area is quite a popular cycling spot and the cyclist are always out and about early in the mornings, I can believe that it is quite dangerous and I have seen that a lot of motorists have a complete disregard for the safety of the cyclists. In some cases though the cyclists tend to ride abreast which honestly isn't ideal & I do think that the probability of getting knocked over is higher.

Natasha   said:
