Nissan is going to release their latest version of their electric car next year, the Leaf. There will be about 30 new different electric models from different car companies coming out over the next year or two and obviously many of them will be chasing the leadership of Tesla. Of course, as there is with everything, such as people who claim to prefer manual cars, technology will in due course take over even the most die-hard fanatics of gas and fuel cars. There will come a time when they have no choice at all.
Before you laugh and dismiss that, the UK and France have already said that vehicles powered by fuel such as petrol or diesel, will be banned from being driven in those countries by the years 2040. In other words, if in the year 2040 you want to drive a petrol-driven car, you will not be driving it in France or in the UK! Things change, slowly at first, and then faster and faster. There were 21,000 electric cars that were sold in 2011, but it is already up to 540,000 and you will see some dramatic developments in this area in the next year or two. It will be very interesting, from a lawyer’s perspective, and it is not going to change things right now, as to how the various Road Accident Funds and similar Funds around the world will be funded once half the cars are electric! I guess the other side is once there is more computer technology driving all the cars, there will also be far lower accident rates anyway.

I think its great for environmental purposes. I just wonder how accident claims will be dealt with though.

Technology is changing so often lately. Hopefully SA will catch up soon and will these cars will in SA?

The world really is changing... And although it might be fancy to have these electric cars roaming around, it comes with a fancy price tag too...
I wonder how many people would actually invest in these cars and how the accident rate would really be affected

I will love an electric car although I think it will come with a big price as well. It will definitely lower the accident rate and the roads will be much safer. Change is good and this will definitely benefit our world.

I'm one of those who prefer manual cars and are a bit skeptical regarding self driven motor vehicles. But things probably have to change, if you look how much things have changed over many years. I just never thought it would have happened in my life time. But will be interesting to see.

We have to start somewhere to save the environment, hopefully SA will catch up with these countries. I’m not a big Nissan fan but it would be interesting to see the new Nissan Leaf.

I think that its fantastic to have more electric cars making their way on to the roads. I cant wait to be an owner of one so that I don't feel completely guilty every morning.

It will be beneficial towards the environment as well as our pockets. Slowly but surely this will be the way to go in the future.

Great news for the environment. The transition will not be an easy one at first I'm sure but as time progresses I am sure growing pains will get sorted out. I think for most people it is a case of what is the cost implications and will it be affordable

Sounds great for the environment, but i must say i have a thousand and one questions, like for example if we are able to charge our cars at home how much would our electricity bill be ? and how many times would you have to charge it etc?? this will be really interesting to see

I think in a few years time its going to take over all cars no one is going to drive a manual or automatic car anymore looking forward to it actually that Nissan Leaf looks like a nice car.

I think this will definitely take over in a few year’s time or even quicker than we expect. Anything that is eco-friendly are much better, even though there are people that still do not care.

I can understand that we are trying to save the world one step at a time. You cannot however force a persont to spend money they may not have.
I like Nikita's comment though - probably will be one that will be used

Can you imagine the sort of excuses that employers would start receiving? .. "I'm sorry I could not make it to work, I forgot to plug in my car."

News about Electric cars are very bad news to the Opec Economy. To them life is about oil and 2040 will catch up with their economies very quickly. They really need to diversify as a matter of urgency . they must not make a mistake like we did of relying on commodities.

I agree that eventually electric cars would be the only cars on the road and that fuel powered cars would become redundant. It amazes how quickly technology takes over and we all adapt and cannot imagine life without it, and I think that that's how it would eventually be with electric cars.

This is going to be an interesting transition. I think in the long run it will be a positive change especially for the eco system and global warming!

To think that you are sitting at the back of a motor vehicle and it is driving itself around. Its actually mind blowing, The problem is they are very pricey and not everybody will be able to afford it .What will people do who cant afford to buy a brand new electric car if they band them from the country?

This is exciting :) I will definitely, if more affordable drive an electric car and as B said "eco-friendly approach is going to be a must"
But I believe in a few years the electric car will be more popular and the price will suit most people’s pocket

I think that the eco-friendly approach is going to be a must in most countries in the near future, we have to take care of what we have left. Once the electric vehicles become more popular and more people invest in them, perhaps they will become more affordable, allowing most people to look at that option.

I haven't even justified letting go of my manual vehicle to an automatic vehicle with a little bit of a price difference, I highly doubt I would be changing to an electric one possibly because it may well only be affordable when it becomes more common.

I agree with Jessical M. These cars are great for the environment and minimise the polution already caused by all our cars and factories. I do however believe that these cars should be affordable for all. Some of them are extremly expensive and not everyone can afford it.

This is still a scary thought for me, I still feel like I need to be in control of the car that I am in! It would be interesting to see how this will change the law surround Road Accident Fund claims!

I am all for this, I think it is great for our world, we already have enough pollution we don't need more. But I worry for South Africa because with all our power cuts I can forsee big problems. They need to fix that first.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens when the number of petrol and diesel driven cars decreases and what will happen with the RAF. Never really thought about that. But it makes 100% sense that the number of electric cars will increase dramatically in the next few years. Technology is improving at an incredible speed.
Jessica Apfel said:

I really like the name 'the leaf' it is so fitting. It would have quite a negative impact on the RAF as a certain percentage of the fuel price is attributed to the fund? Will they set up an alternative in due course? It will have to become more afforadable for it to catch on in a third world country like SA.

Would be very fascinating to drive one of those cars! I can see only good points of bringing this kind of cars on roads all over the world. But it is only the begging, only some places in the world can fully maintain and charge these kind of vehicles.
In South Africa, there are three fully electric vehicles on sale in the market: BMW's Nissan Leaf. Various manufacturers have several battery-hybrid vehicles available locally, including Volvo and Mercedes-Benz. But do we have enough charging stations and what will cost us to charge our new car?

It sounds all good that they would like to implement this however these electric vehicles come at a cost and not everyone can maybe afford them at the time. So then will people be forced to use public transport which is also not a bad thing I'm guessing less accidents less emissions.
